Seems so long ago now, Henry, but wasn't Obama in a world of negative when he sent the guys in? Yes, he was. We should remember that. With Obama it is all about him, and he sure pulled this rabbit out of the hat when things were not going well FOR HIM, didn't he?

There are some points made there that might be plausible. I could even play devils advocate.
Lets say the second chopper did not go down. Here is a problem even with where I am going.
The Pakistani an forces are rushing to the compound , they know something is going on there.
The Seals clean out the house for Intel and now have 18 live people[from reports} to get out of there. The other chopper from what I understand had another 12 Seals and operators on it, now you are going to put 18 more people on heavily loaded choppers, {ammo, equipment, weapons} and blow away?
Nine more plus the body of of Osama over 200 lbs?
Even on two choppers? What kind of chopper can lift that load that is used in spec ops? They still have a long flight home.
If they could say, I doubt it but say they could and did, then Pakistani forces come to the compound , find four dead bodies, aren't supposed to know who was living there, or who the dead people are so what can they announce. Now they are waiting for us to announce, they know choppers were there, but maybe the Chinese, who know, they can guess but...
There is a scenario that might have given some time to the event, however , even with the two choppers , they are not taking out the 18 live ones, they are not going to take OUT the 18 either, leave 22 dead lying around, with out direct orders from the highest, and not enough time for that to be thought out. Even if orders given, carried out, civilians, no way such a order is given, or if given, possible carried out , unlawful.
This PONTUS does not make decisions seat of his pants, not knocking it , just a known fact, Bush, maybe, doubt it but maybe, so they have to leave live people there , even if took out some, they will talk and say who was were and what happened.
They stay quiet and Pakistani Military gives the order, get information. They WILL talk, so the secret is out real quick and now we haven't even notified Pakistan , they notify us , then the S really hits the fan.
Instead of celebrating one of the greatest coups of our military ever, Israel have their Entebbe, unbelievable accomplishment, we have this raid, into foreign country, all our people home safe, mission accomplished and good Intel gotten too, so many playing political intrigue with this event, a shame, takes away from the ones who did it and could have lost so much but for the grace of .
To nit pick, come up with all these scenarios like the one you searched out , all these folks are earning a few bucks churning out all this clock and dagger and what ifs and dissing of, I am to much of a realist, not trying to look to deep into every scheme to discover the "oh look at this idea", 99 % of those scenarios are for Schwarzenegger to play in his younger days .
However, not for me to take away your fun , have at it my friend, did enjoy that article you posted as I said.

Impossible to get to the truth here, and very unusual, I read, to bring the men home right after the operation as Obama did. I mean, they are trained professionals, the highest there is. They did what they are trained to do, but were pulled home. Why? I really have to wonder what is happening to those men as this administration tries to pull together a perfect picture that doesn't change from minute to minute. These are special operation people, not front line troops on deployment . They are stationed in VA, their families are in VA, they train, they go on missions, when not training and going on missions they go home to their wife and children, mow the grass, change the diapers, do some shopping, car pool.

krickitt, the daily Rassmussen tracking poll has him slipping back down and I heard one talking head say tonight he was already back to where he was before the bin Laden raid. Oliver North was on Hannity and really laid it on Obama about having diarhea of the mouth about the intel booty. Just one more reason we need a new president. I wonder in total, how many people are dead today that would not be except for Obama and his team of numbskulls playing with their lives, and how much longer, , , and tougher, , , it will be, or if it will ever be, over and done. He don't want to "overly" intimidate the radicals. If they are already killing themselves trying to kill Americans, how the devil does he think they can be intimidated more than that?

The problem of sites like this, my opinion here , is that at times serious topics are put up that some like to discuss openly, even in disagreement , but respectfully. Henry put up a interesting article from some one who knows a bit about special operations. Now Henry and I agree on little politically, yet I found the article very interesting because it gives a bit of incite into the thinking of one who has been involved in this demanding field for I think 21 years or more, and while I question the authors political feelings, I do so with respect. They are his opinions an he has won the right to express them and feel as he does. I have respect for his expertise in his chosen profession, it takes special people for that, but when it comes personal feelings on a non expertise field, I am not in awe or wonderment. Competence in one field doesn't automatically give competence in another, and one can respectfully disagree with the the field you don't see eye to eye on. I raised some questions, Henry directed me to a point I rebutted there was a back and forth and whether Henry got any thing from the exchange or not, I did. Some other points were raised by some other or others, forgot now, serious discussion, but then the above comes along and I have to ask , why? What does it ad to the discussion at hand. If the one who posted it thinks it is going to change any ones mind by suggesting as a diss against someone they don't care for, it isn't. All here, really only a few, same ones, know their feeling, no one is changing their views . It is just silly, serves no purpose and on this thread, it degrades one of the hi points of US military accomplishments ever performed by a small elite unit. A event that stands with operations done over decades by similar young people who took on missions that were suicidal but because they were asked to do it , told it was necessary , they did it. Many we don't know about, those events lost in the dust bins of time, even the names of the participants are lost. These range from the Confederates{ I consider them Americans} who manned the submersible the Huntley and perished , all of them, after attacking and destroying a Union ship of war in our civil war. The Americans who were part of Merrill's Marauders in Burma who attacked the Japanese forces way behind the lines suffering from disease, hunger , just miserable conditions, and also so many more heroic happenings in our history and this was another one to add to that collection, yet I see the non sense , add nothing to the discussion , wise ass post above and have to ask why, was it necessary? Sheesh, Dezi, just pointing out billis' link was broken. . . Me bad , apology, , as you can see I thought you were just dissing the whole thing..ok again to me, , sorry..but my sentiments in a way, in general, now not aimed at you, but in general, at times , what happens, takes away from..if you can get my drift, I know , it's hard , ask your friend she has me somewhat figured out.

True. I see all over the internet in other countries every single day extreme hatred towards the USA, but I don't see that story on my TV, which is many folks only news source. I don't think they can hate us more. More than what? Wanting to kill us? What is worse than that?

krickitt, it can be worse, and here is one example of how. Control the media and you can control the population. Joseph Goebbels showed us that. With help from the top it took him 7 years to transform a democracy into zombies that allowed their government take entire groups of people from their homes and give them to the highest bidders: First of Four Parts
When liberal investor George Soros gave $1.8 million to National Public Radio, it became part of the firestorm of controversy that jeopardized NPR's federal funding. But that gift only hints at the widespread influence the controversial billionaire has on the mainstream media. Soros, who spent $27 million trying to defeat President Bush in 2004, has ties to more than 30 mainstream news outlets - including The New York Times, Washington Post, the Associated Press, NBC and ABC.
Prominent journalists like ABC's Christiane Amanpour and former Washington Post editor and now Vice President Len Downie serve on boards of operations that take Soros cash. This despite the Society of Professional Journalist's ethical code stating: "avoid all conflicts real or perceived."
This information is part of an upcoming report by the Media Research Centers Business & Media Institute which has been looking into George Soros and his influence on the media. www.mrc.org/bmi/commentary/2011/Over__Major_News_Organizations_Linked_to_George_Soros.html

He had perfect and well-founded confidence the Pakistanis would protect him, krickitt. That's why they weren't informed. The big question for me, is, why was there not a saferoom in the basement? You are the number one hunted person in the world, and you sleep in a third floor bedroom everynight, subject to attack. One would think there would have been a "safe complex" below grade, that is locked at night, with tunnels going blocks in several directions for a fast exit, in an emergency. Something does not look right.

Osama could not have been that stupid, or felt that as ease, as not being necessary.
Or........there was a safe room that for whatever reason was not being used, and that is where the real intel treasure was stored.

Lol.... And I am sure you were just as outraged when it was revealed Micheal McManus,Maggie Gallagher,Armstrong Williams, and a host of other syndicated columnists were recieving payments from the White House to write favorable pieces, and push agendas. National Reviews editor Rich Lowery even admited recieving fees from the government to promote WH agendas. .......Of course you were equally upset ...lol

I don't know what to say to you desi, except that the idea of being in such a hurry to upstage everybody for the sake of padding the dance card is not the actions of a responsible leader at any time, and can be deady to a lot of people during armed conflict. Deadly to people who value their lives just as much as Obama values his. I expect it's best that I defer to somebody else. President Obama's rush to break the news of the Al Qaeda leader's death no doubt cost the U.S. a valuable intelligence edge.By Jonah Goldberg May 10, 2011 For a week people have been asking, "Why won't the president release Osama bin Laden's photo?" That's the wrong question. We should be asking, "Why was Barack Obama in such a hurry to tell us Bin Laden was dead?"
The White House says the information in Bin Laden's compound is the equivalent of a "small college library," potentially containing incalculably valuable and unique data on Al Qaeda operations, personnel and methods.
"It's going to be great even if only 10% of it is actionable," a government official told Politico's Mike Allen.
I'm no expert on such matters — though I've talked to several about this — but even a casual World War II buff can understand that the shelf life of actionable intelligence would be extended if we hadn't told the whole world, and Al Qaeda in particular, that we had it.
It's a bit like racing to the microphones to announce you've stolen the other team's playbook even before you've had a chance to use the information in the big game.
But that's exactly what President Obama did. He raced to spill the beans. The man couldn't even wait until morning. At just after 9:45 p.m., the White House communications director, Dan Pfeiffer, informed the media: "POTUS to address the nation tonight at 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time."
The announcement came less than three hours after Obama had been informed that there was a "high probability" Bin Laden was dead and that the Navy SEAL helicopters had returned to Afghanistan.
In other words, it seems that from the get-go the White House planned to announce the news as quickly as possible. Why? Nobody I've talked to can think of a reason that doesn't have to do with politics.
Yes, killing Osama bin Laden is a big secret that would be hard to keep for long. Certainly Pakistan would grow agitated if we simply said nothing about the incursion, though sweating the Janus-faced Pakistanis with silence for a couple of days might yield its own intelligence rewards. In other words, even waiting 24 hours might generate some interesting "chatter." The Pakistanis working with Al Qaeda certainly would have been the first to spread the news that Bin Laden was dead or captured.
But the real treasure trove would be that "college library" of intelligence. And while reports are pouring out from a gloating White House that's leaking like the Titanic in its final hours, one can only assume our analysts have barely begun to exploit the data.
Couldn't they have at least tried to give the CIA a week, a day, even a few more hours to look at it all before letting Ayman Zawahiri and the rest of Al Qaeda know about it? Why give him the slightest head start to go even further underground?
Operation Neptune Spear was the culmination of years of patient intelligence-gathering. The CIA identified Bin Laden's compound nearly 10 months ago, in August 2010, and monitored it by satellite and from a secret safe house in Abbottabad at a cost of tens of millions of dollars.
And even that was breakneck speed compared with the years our government spent hunting Bin Laden. In 2002, the CIA heard about a possible courier code-named Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti. In 2004, it learned that he might have worked closely with Bin Laden. It wasn't until 2007 that it got al-Kuwaiti's real name. It took two more years to track him down to a specific region.
That, of course, barely skims the surface of American patience and sacrifice. We've spent billions of dollars and lost numerous American and allied lives trying to defeat Al Qaeda. Those efforts have ripped apart our politics, from the debates over waterboarding and what some claim is torture to extraordinary rendition, black sites and Guantanamo Bay. Some of those techniques and decisions seem to have led us to Bin Laden's door.
Surely one more week of harmlessly searching hard drives while the public was kept in the dark wouldn't have been too great an additional burden.
Obama says he won't release Bin Laden's death photo for fear that American triumphalism might hurt American interests. Would that he had the same concern when it came to White House triumphalism. www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-goldberg-osama-20110510,0,5729340.column So are you saying that it would have been best to keep the death of Bin Laden out of the public sphere until everyone else is rounded up, even though they don't know who really everyone else is? And where was the guarantee that media in other countries not broadcast that event and we get it second hand although the US is the country who was responsible for Bin Laden's capture and death? Once the deed was done, it was no longer a secret. Someone, somewhere would have said something. It is the thirst for news, to have a blow-by-blow, that some of the information that is out there now that we have. If there wasn't, most of you wouldn't have anything to pontificate about. Would it be more preferable to have President Obama to come on TV and say, Look, Bin Laden is dead, don't look for any other information to come out about the events before, information found and events subsequent to his death until I am good and damned ready to tell you.

The miracle is this administration stopped their stupid kabuki dance politics long enough to get the job done.

Facts were either wrong, or few and far between. But now, a concerning admission by Defense Secretary Robert Gates shows one thing was flowing: information leaks. In fact, there have been so many leaks that the SEAL team that carried out the raid now fears for its safety. “We are very concerned about the security of our families – of your families and our troops, and also these elite units that are engaged in things like that. And without getting into any details … I would tell you that when I met with the team last Thursday, they expressed a concern about that, and particularly with respect to their families,” Gates told an audience of Marines at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Then he dropped this bombshell: “Frankly, a week ago Sunday, in the Situation Room, we all agreed that we would not release any operational details from the effort to take out bin Laden. That all fell apart on Monday, the next day.” Later, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Geoff Morrell confirmed Gates’s concerns to CNN: “He was indeed voicing his concern about the breakdown in operational security after the killing of Bin Laden. Anonymous sources revealing secret information about the tactics, training, and equipment of covert forces put at risk our ability to successfully mount similar missions in the future.” Because of the loose lips, Gates said the DOD is looking into ways to “pump up the security” for the elite team. ** So, was it shining the light on himself or covering his butt that made Obama put the troops at risk?**

Those that gather news can litigate to have access, how do you think the Associate Press and other news agencies got the information about Guantanamo Bay detainees? They had to sue to get it. There has to be a compelling reason not to have newsgathers access to certain information and this would be one of them, under the auspices that it has to do with national security. However, this says more to me that those that already have access are the ones these seals and their families have to watch out for. Also as an FYI, Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit for access to the Bin Ladin death photos -- so maybe those that want to see the blood and gore may get their wish. There are people that feeds us news for their bread and butter. Do you think that in the scheme of things that the protection of those that did the deed are more important than getting a scoop? ?

I have cleaned it up, I think. Gents --
As has been mentioned quite a bit recently, throwing the SpecOps guys under the bus is a bad idea. Sh*tstorm on the horizon.
The following introductory comments and Froggy's posting on BLACKFIVE came to me through some back-channel sources developed during years of covering snake-eaters and their weaponry for SMALL ARMS REVIEW.

In my opinion, this one deserves widest possible dissemination.
And, as you read this, please consider pausing to remember those interrogators who are being "investigated" for the third time by the former United States (now Obama) Justice Department. Imagine the hell they are going through - the expense - the trauma - the agony of their wives and their children...their mothers and their fathers...
Talk about torture? Now that's torture! And we can be certain that each of the interrogators being investigated would gladly suffer waterboarding if the Obama government would cease torturing their wives, children, mothers and fathers. How can we permit this? Waterboarding a terrorist only lasts seconds. The 'waterboarding' of our CIA/military personnel, being perpetrated by the Obama administration, has been going on for many, many months and will not cease until it is voted out of office.
Am I angry about the intentional distortion of the role of the SEALS and the CIA and our military? Guess.
Please do read this SEAL's thoughts on the subject. He certainly has earned the right to have his views known.

Posted By Blackfive [May 03, 2011] This just in from our author emeritus, Froggy:
Squandering Our Victory
Just like everybody else, the news that Navy SEALs had infiltrated Pakistan and shot Usama bin Laden in the face really brightened my evening. I decided to celebrate with a Patel Brothers cigar and two fingers of Jack Daniels. Of course my heart was especially bursting with pride at the news that my brothers on the East Coast got the call and executed their mission flawlessly despite crashing a helo into the compound. If you have to be in a helo crash, you are far better off being in one piloted by a Nightstalker of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) because frankly nobody on the planet even comes close to how good those guys are. This is an operation that I have dreamed of being a part of for nearly 10 years, and I have fantasized about rolling up on a target to find UBL in my sights. I am fairly certain that I know somebody on that assault force, and I look forward to the East Coast UDT/SEAL Reunion this summer and sharing a cold one with some of the boys.
By now, May 3, 2011, the stories about how this successful operation is going to ensure a Barack Obama victory in 2012 are legion. I even got an email to that effect on the night of the 1st when we were all basking in the afterglow of UBLs demise. Ill admit the thought had crossed my mind, but I dismissed it immediately secure in the knowledge that if any POTUS could fuck this up, he was sure to be The One. Right on schedule, the Administration has already put out several conflicting versions of actions on the objective, and I have yet to see somebody from the military nay the SEAL community on a podium at the Pentagon laying out the operation and answering (or not answering) questions. The Bush Administration was very good at this, and when some major military operation took place, the White House would direct the media to the Pentagon where some General or Admiral held a press conference often with video clips and some Powerpoint slides showing some the mission highlights. The Bush White House was happy to let the experts handle things and show a unified front.
Meanwhile, between NSC staffers, the WH Press Secretary, Homeland Security, CIA and a multitude of Senior Administration Officials on background, the story has morphed into various versions of events. While the political side of me sees this correctly as another manifestation of the incompetence of this Administration, this vacillation is causing real harm to the significance of our victory here and to the reputation of the SEAL Teams. Let me assure you right now that there is no such thing as a Kill only mission. If that SEAL operator came through the door to find UBL with his hands up, compliant, and unarmed (including no evidence of a suicide vest) he would have been flex cuffed - - - - - - - and dragged roughly out to a marshalling area and then onto the helo.
To start out with the story that UBL had used his wife as a shield while shooting at the assaulters and to devolve that into a woman was wounded and UBL was unarmed and shot in the face is quite a large spectrum of truth. Add to that the false notion of the Kill only mission, and now you have the entire SEAL community being thrown under the bus as wonton killers of women and unarmed civilians.
Are Navy SEALs eager to kill terrorists and UBL most of all? Hells Yeah! But we would not be tasked with a mission profile that excludes the capture of the single greatest intelligence bonanza in the history of the conflict. Certainly we will exploit the intel collected on the target and soon, but if you simply want to kill somebody no matter what you do not send Navy SEALs across a sovereign border to do it. That is what Hellfire missiles and JDAMs are designed to do.
This is also curious from the standpoint of Islamic sensitivity, which is clearly foremost in the mind of this White House. Only Obama could go out of his way to emphasize the respect for the Islamic burial process only to tee up perfectly the conditions under which conspiracy theories are born. The primitive peoples of the middle east are perhaps the most gullible ethnic group on the planet. When I was in Iraq, there was a widely held belief that VBIEDs were manufactured on our US military base in Ramadi, and that the guys with beards (like me) were actually Israeli agents driving in HMMVs with the Star of David on the door. I shit you not. The point is that coming out with a well laid out media plan that is executed from the Pentagon by experts is critical if your goal is to provide a clear and undivided narrative of the event. Of course, this White House has never been very good at sharing credit and it is that infantile demand for attention that is causing this victory to become muddled in conflicting accounts and naked political point scoring.
Frankly, I am content to watch Obama shoot himself in the foot while still having presided over a tremendous effort by our intelligence community and the SEAL Teams, but Ill be damned if he is going to be allowed to implicate my brothers out of his own incompetence or political expediency. More importantly, the killing of UBL is undoubtedly a very significant event in the War on Terror and the momentum that we have gained should not be lost by grandstanding, partisan jackassery, and rank incompetence. Get your sh-t together Mr. President! I served with a guy aboard the USS TENNESSEE who was a little old for the SEAL teams, but he was good- and it was a lifelong dream and I could tell he hadn't completely given up on it, so I pushed him. I knew that we served at the time with one Lt. David Krulak (SP?), yes, his father was the Commandant of the Marine Corps at the time. Long story short- the SEAL candidate was a Yeoman. I worked with him every day, and read his stuff everyday. He made it in. I am 92% sure he wrote this. I'm trying to find out- but even if it was him, he may deny it.

Wasn't me. I just thought I knew the guy. He has officially denied writing it, though he is in agreement with it.
