I just had the hose/no hose dilemna and I think the answer is 'it depends'. I was wearing closed toed shoes and opted to wear hose as my legs were unevenly tanned and I had a couple of fading bruises (I'm a clutz and hurt myself fairly often). The hose evened out the color of my legs - I forgot about my tattoo so that was alittle odd... but it was an evening event and I figured after an hour or two everyone would have Beer Goggles on and not notice (or remember).
I've heard about 'spray on hose' to even out the color and smooth your legs - I'm wondering if it's like a spray on Tan.
I think hose with sandals or strappy shoes is generally considered a no no these days.

No, we don't walk away. But when we're holding on to something precious, we run.

The dress code at the library I used to work at required hose for any skirt above the ankle. I used to bounce around in mini-skirts and no hose and no one said anything for years. Then my boss came by me and told me I had to start wearing longer skirts and hose. So I started wearing jeans instead.
We also weren't allowed to wear shorts or capris but we could wear leggings. It was so weird. And it was a library dress code not a city dress code because my sister worked in a different dept. and was allowed to wear dressy shorts and capris.

I think you can skip the hose most of the time anymore - wearing tights when it is seasonally appropriate or bare legs when it isn't seems to be the modern standard.
Never wear hose with sandals. Never wear sandals with a suit or suit-equivalent.
That said, I think peep toe shoes or sling backs are both appropriate with a suit, and there are other show styles that have comparable cut outs that would be suit appropriate.

No input here. I get to wear jeans everyday, and sweats if I want.. but I work in the fitness industry. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

No real input here either, I'm just reading and thinking about how I don't think I could "hack it" in your world. I go to work in Carhartts or jeans and a t-shirt, which I love, steel-toed boots, which I tolerate, and a hard hat, which I absolutely hate. I really did lol at the question "and how much authority does an employer have over if/what type of undergarments you choose to wear to work anyways?" because, odd as it seems, my employer does ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) It is supposed to be all cotton or other natural fabric (like silk). Also supposed to me minimal elastic and bras should not have extra lacy embellishments unless they are all natural fiber. Not supposed to wear any underwire. It's all safety related, for arc flash. The natural fibers will not burn and melt to your skin like synthetics (polyester, etc). I'm, um, "blessed", and sorry, but my bra is going to have elastic and an underwire if needed (and really, it is) unless they are willing to pay for the $80 bra that meets actual arc flash ratings and looks like it would do anything useful for me.

Peep-toe, yes, sandals = no!
I wear hose with skirts, but I know it is old fashioned. I don't like to have most shoes touch my feet directly. In pants I wear knee-highs. I know it isn't fashionable - but whatever. I'm so the definition of middle aged, I don't even care if people judge.
I will also say that I work in a pretty casual office, and I can't stand it when people wear flip-flops, or even some sandals. If they are dressy and pretty, it may be okay - but if they look like the croc sandals that you buy at the dollar store and wear them to the beach, just grow up and buy a real pair of work shoes.

In my line of work we bust people who wear open toed shoes. Not safe for a lab enviornment.

I volunteer in a hospital setting. Open toed shoes are not allowed.
I wear pant suits. I lived through the days of being required to wear dresses/skirts and I'm not going back. I am not comfortable in a dress any more.
I have foot problems and can't wear pumps. My shoes are clean, but they are orthotic shoes. I can't wear anything else without being miserable. It's been like this for at least 20 years. I swear my foot problems were caused by all those heels/pumps.

I wear hose nearly every day (I'm 27) but it's mostly because my legs are fish-belly white and I don't want to scare people ![](http://boards.msn.com/Themes/default/emoticons/tongue_smile.gif) My legs are well-shaped but not an even tone and, as midwesternjd put it, "fishbelly white". There are also visible veins- not the really awful varicose types, but they don't add to my appearance. I don't wanna mess with spray-on tanner, etc. Stockings even out the skin tone and keep me from looking naked. OP- have you looked at what other women are wearing? That's usually your best cue, especially if there are women above your level. If you're the only woman at or above that level in the office, that doesn't help, though.

What do you think about open toed shoes in a jacket only office?
Has anything been said about the presence or absence of pants/skirts? I would think that if you are wearing a jacket and NO pants, then the footwear might be open to interpretation.
Or not noiced at all.
