Possible out of sight , out of mind, possible because of it happening in Africa, possible because the race of the woman... What ever, if true and if it wasn't would it be said it is, over 1000 woman a day being raped in the Congo. It is said that 2 million German Woman/Girls, old/Young were raped in Berlin and surrounding areas when the Russians conquered the city in WW2. Some publicity but it was Germany, the suffering of the Russian people at the hands of the Natzi's, Germans, end of War, so while known , kind of put to the back pages , forgotten except by the Germans. Here this is today, yet on my media, even the media channels, so far, I have heard nothing. Lybia, Syria, Egypt Bahrain, Palastine, Israel, this is on the news, not like it was but still it's on the news, but this, nada. So know you/we/I all here now know. ----------------------------------------------------------- english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2011/05/2011511231649539962.html--------------------------------------------------- Africa Rape of women in DR Congo 'tops 1000 a day' Average of 48 females aged 15-49 are raped every hour in DR Congo, 26 times more than previously thought, study reports. 12 May 2011 00:19 More than 1,100 women are raped every day in the Democratic Republic of Congo, study reports [EPA] More than 1,100 women are raped every day in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), making sexual violence against women 26 times more common than previously thought, a study has concluded. More than 400,000 women and girls between the ages of 15 to 49 were raped in the war-ravaged country in central Africa during a 12-month period in 2006 and 2007, according to the study published in the American Journal of Public Health on Wednesday. That is 26 times more than the 15,000 women that the United Nations has reported were raped there during the same 12 months. "Our results confirm that previous estimates of rape and sexual violence are severe underestimates of the true prevalence of sexual violence occurring in the DRC," Amber Peterman, lead author of the study, said. 'Chronic underreporting' "Even these new, much higher figures still represent a conservative estimate of the true prevalence of sexual violence because of chronic underreporting due to stigma, shame, perceived impunity, and exclusion of younger and older age groups as well as men," she said. The study, which gathered data from 2007, did not capture sexual violence among girls younger than 15 years or women older than 49 years and did not include sexual violence among boys and men. "Although the burden of sexual violence among these groups is uncertain, a review of the records of 4,133 women attending Panzi Hospital in Sud Kivu showed that six per cent were younger than 16 years and 10 per cent were older than 65 years," the study said. "In addition, Human Rights Watch reported that sexual violence in 2009 doubled in comparison with 2008. If this assessment is accurate, then the current prevalence of sexual violence is likely to be even higher than our estimates suggest."

Maybe Obama can bomb the congo next.
Sort of helps explain why HIV/AIDS is running rampant over there.

Glad I don't live in the State of Congo.

Deziloooooo I guess the big question is WHY? Does the article give any reasons for it? Yes, are the rapes occuring due to political wars, where they are trying to wipe out the minority population, or is it rape for the physical dominance of women?

Dez,
This is a horrible thing. I am curious why you felt the need to bring up race as the reason more people haven't heard about it?

Ok I went back to the website & read a couple of the articles. Just from the little I saw though it looks like a hopeless situation. They weren't able to say exactly who was doing the raping (just men in uniform) & one would assume that the area has a more or less complete breakdown with laws being enforced. Then there's the follow up problems of Aids that are sure to be spread as this progresses. That will haunt the country for even more than the next generation. I think that this is one of those problems that there isn't really a solution to & all other countries can do is watch as it happens. I do wonder if the leaders of both sides (rebel & government) realize that even if they win the war they actually win an empty country.

Oh & I would point out that what someone feels is a snarky comment just might be the way the poster actually feels & not meant to be snarky. While I have a lot of sympathy for the women over there I pretty much feel that the 2 sides of the war can go ahead & kill each other. It's not my job to takes sides (other than the side of the true victims) as to which is right because I really don't know nor care. I don't feel that a war in Africa is really any of my business.

Complete lawlessness reigns supreme in many areas of Africa. Other than condemn the actions, there really isn't much we can do about it.

Without the guns (supplied by America) these men wouldn't stand a chance, and the people would be able to fight back.

Agreed, floridayankee. While this is deplorable, there is nothing we can do. It's happening because the perpetrators can get away with it. Laws are not enforced, so there's no punishment. We can howl all we like about the horror of it all, but we can't force the country to uphold its laws and protect its people.

Sure, they're fair (and quite elusive) game in international waters, but there's not much we can do once ashore...unless we want to start another war of course..

"Previously, Congo's sexual violence has been framed as women and children caught between two armed groups in eastern Congo," said Lisa Shannon, founder of A Thousand Sisters, a human rights campaign group in the US.
"But these numbers show us that conflict in the east has produced a rape pandemic of astronomical proportions, but that that pandemic is not contained. We now know high levels of sexual violence exist even in non-conflict areas."
Earlier studies, including one by the United Nations last year, suggested that 15,000 women were raped during the research period in 2006 and 2007.
The new report, led by Amber Peterman, looked at figures available from Congolese government files and other nationally representative data.
"Even these new, much higher figures still represent a conservative estimate of the true prevalence of sexual violence," Ms Peterman said.
"[There is] chronic under-reporting due to stigma, shame, perceived impunity, and exclusion of younger and older age groups as well as men." Sexual violence occurred in all of Congo's provinces, the study showed.www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/democraticrepublicofcongo/8509774/Woman-raped-in-Congo-nearly-every-minute.htmlIt's a pit that is sustained in violence by the international banking cartel.

Dez, This is a horrible thing. I am curious why you felt the need to bring up race as the reason more people haven't heard about it? As I said , for something this horrible , just wondering why so little , if any publicity. If you see the dates the stats are from I believe 2008 , however it is on going , and in fact in 2009 or 10, forgot now, they believe the incidents doubled and are still going on today. Yet who has really heard about it. Sudan yes, Arabs raping Black woman , political mastery over the black inhabitants, that there has been some publicity. Lets be honest, the average American thinks of Africa as the Black Continent, some know no more of it then what was seen in old black and white Tarzan films. I saw one late a few weeks ago, with porters by the hundred being used on a filmed safari, stayed up to watch just to marvel at all the stereotypes. The acts are against woman, and the race of those involved, well, no publicity, is there a correlation , as I suggest , possible.

I do think history will frown on this whole mess in Africa, and how the world handled it. Genocide, is what it is. And then there is this. Saw this awhile back. us.altermedia.info/news-of-interest-to-white-people/african-superstition-spreads-aids_1243.html.................The answer apparently lies in the popular African “AIDS cure” inspired by witchdoctors and superstition which is used in virtually every Black African country–the practice of raping virgins to try to cure AIDS. In almost all Black African countries, females just don’t make it any more past the age of twelve without being gang-raped to “cure” the local men of their AIDS. And in a very weird and horrible sort of way, this practice of raping the young has prevented the African population from shrinking even though most of the infected still die by their 30s. Mass raping of young girls has caused a quantum leap in the number of teenaged pregnancies. Blacks are dying at an enormous rate and their population is still growing. There’s little information available on the number of Africans fleeing to First World nations to get free AIDS treatment at our expense. There’s also little information available on whether these African immigrants go looking for innocent young virgins to rape in America and Europe to try to cure their disease the superstitious way. MORE..

Dezilooooo asked: "As I said , for something this horrible , just wondering why so little , if any publicity."
Could it be, perhaps that it is happening on a continent, 1/2 the world away. Involving our citizens, our politician, in no perceivable way? With the economic crisis, the housing debacle, Healthcare(Health Insurance) reform, that things that matter to the American public have risen to a point that the people of this country would rather focus on fixing our issues and not trying to help people with money we don't have get distributed to people who don't need it, while they allow their people to feel the ire of the ones they cannot control.
So you are asking why aren't more of us shedding tears for the women of the Congo and I ask why aren't more people shedding tears for the destitution and destruction that is happening in our country?

Yeah, yeah- we don't give a shit about Africa because it's just a bunch of black people. Jeeze, does the liberal line ever get old to you libs? Because it's sure wearing thin over on our side of the aisle.
How about if you warmists take your thumb off that drum of DDT so we can prevent 2,000,000 excruciating deaths a year in Africa JUST by the erradication of Malaria? That wouldn't take anything but us getting out of the way?
How about envirowhackos get out of the way of African farmers and ranchers, as well as urban development?
Africa would do better if we LEFT THEM ALONE than all this aid and "help" we're giving them now.

Did someone compare Africa to Israel? www.usaid.gov/locations/sub-saharan_africa/We give TONS to Africa. Don't know what Obama has done, but I know Bush spent more on Africa than any president in history to try to fight HIV/AIDS.

yeah, I saw. dezi's question really had nothing to do with mine though, so I clipped it.
krickitt, I did. if we're all talking about how we should be concentrating on fixing our own problems before helping anybody else, why's this sacred cow still getting money? that's all. the last time I even hinted something like that, I got called a hateful anti-Semite (among other things) by Ed. I'll probably catch hell for it when he's allowed to come out and play, but for now I can ask the question.
