rae... have you read Sunshine by Robin McKinley... ? And create... books can also be a good substitute for television ... I haven't, but googled it and would enjoy it. I'll have to look for it on kindle. Thanks! My last quirky vampire novel was 'You Suck' by Christopher Moore. Fun, quick read, but couldn't compare to his book 'Lamb'. ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) )

The first Christopher Moore book I read was 'Lamb' - I loved it. I picked up 'You Suck' cause it was available at the Library. It was OK, I felt that it was written to be a Movie.... I think I'd like it in it's Movie version better than in it's book version.

But 'Lamb' ranks as one of my favorites.

A working class hero is something to be...
I've come to terms with the fact that the middle class (me) will always get screwed, no matter who's in office. The poor and the rich will be taken care of, it's the middle that spends their lives with their hands around their ankles.

Well, the middle class people aren't poor, and not rich, but they are playing the same ole rat-race game as most people with money do. They want to be like the rich and forget about the poor, and then they want to distance themselves from the poor class of people in which they came from. Unless you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, you are like the rest of the society's poor. You just happen to have a little more money than poor people, but you will never be accepted by the rich regardless on how hard or fast you try to climb that endless ladder. Remember, while the middle class people are thumbing their noses at the poor, the rich are doing the same to you. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Are some of us doomed to be miserable because we resent the poor for what they get and how they take advantage. All the while at the same time envying the rich for their ability to beat or outsmart the system and be taken care of. Or do we just learn to accept it? That is not acceptable to me at all.

While people consider the poor people of taking advantage of programs, the rich people take a lot more than the poor people ever will. Government Welfare for the rich, and even George Bush takes advantage of all the tax breaks he gets due to him being rich.
The rich and middle class people are no better than the poor. They just happen to know how to work the system in their favor by getting huge tax-breaks and feeding off the poor as Queen Elizabeth and her Royal bumming family do in Europe. They all feed off the poor.
While Europe is broke, they spent 64 million of the people's money on this utterly stupid wedding they just had, and now Odumbo is wanting to give them another 180 billion of the American people's money to keep their economy going.
The rich taking care of the rich at the expense of the poor.

I learned a long time ago that it is a waste of time and energy to stew about things that are beyond my control. And to focus on the good things in my life.

However when we can get a dig in, it's a nice feeling. We have an acquaintance who receives an ungodly amount of food stamps ($900/month for her and 3 kids). Every time she comes over for a party/get together, we make her stop at the grocery store and buy all the food. Might as well get some of my cash back.

Since when is keeping money you earned "welfare".....and while we are on the subject, I have no doubt that the poor "champions" of the country (Obama, Kerry, Edwards and company) are taking advantage of Bush's tax cuts as well...why leave them out?

I wish. Usually T-Bones. Perhaps we should order crab legs or fresh lobster next time.

I agree. The politicians and celebrities who claim that the rich should pay more in taxes, should put their money where their mouths are and go ahead and do it - make a donation to the government. No one is stopping them. We all know that if/when the government decides to raise taxes on the rich, they will all be visiting their CPAs to reduce their tax burdens.

Hmm, I guess I don`t see it as odd, Dark Honour, because I feel the library is such a great substitute?
Heresy!!! ;D
Seriously, I couldn't get through a day without my books, at least not without feeling seriously deprived. It would be the same as going without food. How am I supposed to know what I'm going to be in the mood to read from one day to the next? I have everything on my shelf from heavy-duty Russian literature to chick lit to biographies to extreme survival stories to children's books to guilty pleasures and everything in between and more. I read everything I can get my hands on. I read books many, many times if I like them. Having all that reading pleasure available on a daily basis isn't a luxury so much as a necessity for someone who spends four to six hours a day reading or writing.
I've gotten rid of books a few times in my life, either because I was moving or because I felt like it was time to get rid of some crap. I've always regretted it, every single time. And I was beyond happy when I discovered my mom had saved some of my favorite childhood books.
Anyway, the library isn't even close to being a worthwhile substitute. I don't even live near a good one, and even back when I did, it still wasn't even close to being a worthwhile substitute. It was nice to get books that I wanted to try out but it could never replace my own books.
The best part about libraries is when they have book sales and I can pick up twenty or thirty new books for under $20. Ohhhh yeahhhhh.
Man, I wonder what you would say to my and DF's plan to replace some of our falling-apart favorite books with brand new hardback copies for our long-term library? ;D

To add - discretionary income has also increased in this time. Once you have money to buy the basics, you have the choice to buy healthcare...or Iphone, a second car, eating out more, etc, etc, etc.
Now is so much better.
