while clicking around different blogs and links, i came across this: playspent.org/it's pretty interesting and a little fun. the game obviously has flaws and the choices are not all-inclusive bu it does encourage you to think about the choices we need to make each day.

Based upon a unskilled worker
Life is hard when poor choices are made at the start
You can feel sorry for these people......but most of my compassion disappeared when i went to work in a shelter, and learned that MOST were there because of really bad choices made in their life
I mentor a few high school kids.....and the biggest lesson i can give is to take them with me to the homeless shelter in DC where i volunteer
Suddenly, homework becomes a little more important than video games or basketball
Does everyone have the capacity to go to college....no
But can almost EVERYONE lean a skill that will get them through life.....YES

Very interesting. Although pretty true to life. I know we have made some of those decisions in our home and hoped for the best.
I do have to agree though having lived inner city, gone to school with many people very poor and worked in disadvantaged areas many of what happens to people are choices. When they make poor decisions to begin with or are unwilling to make sacrifices I can see where they get in the binds.

gdg- You bring up a good point- not everyone has the capacity to go to college- and even some folks who have the intellectual capacity to succeed in college lack other necessary components to being successful there. Unfortunately, there is a large push to go to college, instead of teach usable job skills. College is not always the best medium for educating. As you said, "almost everyone can learn a skill that will get them through life".
And in case anyone is curious- I have a partial college education and am finishing 2 related degrees right now. In things that shouldn't be degreed fields.

i think you all make really good points. for me, i found myself making choices in the game based on my values. for instance, if it was something that would benefit my child, i paid for it. but if it was a choice to benefit me, i said no. i also think my knowledge of money management helped me make my choices. if i didn't have that information, or had different values (not saying mine are right or wrong), then maybe i would have made different choices.
it all comes down to education. mizbear and gdgyva, i agree with you--you do not have to go to college to be educated.

Tough choices - made me think what I would really do (like look for a second job, find a roommate earlier) if this was my life. It would be really hard to handle these choices with children or a pet (but the pet helps with stress and depression).
I'm glad I make better choices now!

This game is dismal. Brilliant marketing, especially when they make you type their mission statement as a job application. For us skilled workers, has anyone every played Corporation Incorporated?
