Hello Everyone. Here is this month's Controlled/No Spend Thread as promised. Please post your goals for the month if you would like me to include them in the bi-Monthly update. For the new people there are no real set rules here, you set your own. The basic goal most if not all of us have are to keep track of the days we don't spend and hopefully by that work on saving money. Some are looking to put it into savings others to pay down debt. For some they only count the day as a no spend day if they spend nothing at all. Others will count it if they keep their total under $5. Some count all spending others only count a certain part of their budget. For example I personally take $400 out of the the bank in cash for everything that is not related to vehicle expenses (like gas, oil changes, insurance etc) or the house (mortgage, utilities, HOA) If I spend out of the $400 I count it as a spend day (although if it is less then $5 I usually count it as a no spend day.) You set your own rules. Any questions feel free to ask. You can post your no spend days daily or whenever you want, just put it in bold at the top with the first number being the number you want me to record. If you are doing daily then: Today (or yesterday) $0 Spend day More then one day at a time: 4/31 days $0 Spend Which translates into 4 out of 31 days in December have been no spend so far. Some use the bigger number as their goal number so do 4/15 No spend Days which means they have a goal of 15 no spend days this month.
CSD: Controlled Spend Day BFF: Best Friend Forever DH/DS/DD/DSS: Dear Husband, Dear Son Dear Daughter, fiance, boy friend, Dear Step-Son DIL, MIL, BIL, SIL: Daughter in law, Mother In Law, Brother in Law, Sister In Law NKCW: No Killing Co-Worker Day (could also be no kill DH NKDH etc) MOAN: Moving our a$$ Now aka exercising NS or NSD: No Spend or No Spend Day NEO: No eating out HTH: Hope This Helps KWIM: Know What I mean FWIW: For What It's Worth IMHO or IMO: In my Humble Opinion or In My Opinion Getting Nitzed is referring to when you have a long post and MSN cuts you off so its in two posts instead one. Having a Startsmart Day is referring to when you have 20+ things on your must get done in a day and you accomplish them. Sharing the Simple Lifestyle aka Toasty; Single Mom-KY aka Smokey; MittenKitten aka MK; Pt_In_NY aka Pointy; Red2Black aka R2B2. The Boy is Sheila in Cali's son. the boy or Mowgli is Nsinglet's son Blue is Red_Wagon's DH
For a while I was doing a Question of the Week. One week my question was "How has this thread changed your habits? What tangible benefits have you seen by being a member? I know we occassionally get someone on here that just doesn't get the concept of no spend is so much more then no spending 10 days to blow everything on day 11."
Honeylioness had a wonderful answer I think really defines WHAT we are about:
"I will admit that during my first two months of lurking, I wondered just how in the WORLD someone could not spend any money at ALL for 25 days? Did they just pay all their bills one day a month, and that same day do the food shopping for the month? Like many new to the concept I saw it as horribly, and restrictively, black or white – an opinion first based merely on the name of the thread.
But once I came to understand that it was not so totalitarian and was more about finding a way that worked for you to track your spending and any “leaks” in the wallet, it has felt more like a tool and less like a punishment. I wish I could say that I have paid off five extra years from the mortgage, or now have an EF of six months take home – but alas that would not be true.
What I do have however is a better awareness of where my “leaks” are, what are my hot buttons that make me want to spend on things I really don’t need or really cannot afford right now. And an awareness of the fact when I AM spending money. I think that awareness is key to learning a new behavior or paradigm. Just like lumberlady, some of us have had to look hard in the mirror and acknowledge that we had a problem. Until people can do that, be it an addiction to alcohol or drugs or credit cards ….. they will never really GET it."
Thanks Honeylioness!

This is going to be a tight month. I have to pay a security deposit on my electric. Every 3 years they ask for one and this year it is $535. The last time it was $395. Each time it goes up at least $150. So I am in for at least 25 days absolutely no spend days. I have pulled $50 from last month's monies so I have something to spend for lunch. It won't count against my spending because I already spent the money last month. I need to spend on gas, bills, cat supplies, and food. I have everything else I need so I should be good. I have even put my meals on the table so I can see what I have to eat. I have 5 meals there and a bag of pretzels for snacks. I bought a case of water and I have enough flavoring for all the water and 10 bottles of soda, well 9 now. I need to put my pretzels in snack bags so they will be done. I started writing on WORD. I have put down everything I did today including eating. I have to pay bills now so I will talk to you all tomorrow.

Deposit implies you will get it back, this seems like a major fee. I have never heard of anything like this.

Hey gals, I'm back in for May. I am so excited. I got our automatic contributions to our Roth IRA started again after taking 2 years off and then I also started $10 a week to my variable expense savings account. I'm pumped up. I also am giving up soda for the month of May and while I do have a head ache at the moment. It is a change that I've been needing to do for about 6 months.
At book club last week, we talked about how you don't have to do everything on your list. Just the next thing. Well starting up our savings again and cutting out soda are my "next things".

3cats--I agree with Gin, a "deposit" implies an evential return of the funds. If it is some kind fee why isn't it included in the monthly bill? I think i would check into this further. That is such a huge amount, many families couldn't afford it in one big chunk. I wonder if your social services department could help you.
My roof is replaced!! Now all I have to do is sit down with the contractor and match up the bill with the insurance paperwork. Oh, fun. I wonder when he will finish up the rest of the items.
Moneysquirrel-- I finished the book. I won't say anything until you finish it. Not quite what I expected.
After listening to Ben Bernanke last Wednesday and the Sunday news programs I am getting a bit jittery about what is ahead for the next few months so I think I will be joining 3cats in a very frugal month. I just can't figure which way things will go in June when QE2 ends. Maybe this is the year to "Sell in May and go away." Whatever happens I will try to "save more in May" this year.
I'm not quite sure what my goals are this month, I need to give it some more thought.

I am in for May. It is not starting out as a NS day because I couldn't past up the new low sale price for the Kindle which I was planning to purchase this month anyway. Can't get it to connect to my home network but will work on that. I know how to get around the problem so no major struggles for now. Plus there are a lot of books on the free list that I have been meaning to read or reread so it will pay for itself in the long run. SES-- I am just in the beginning of the third book so it will be a while before I get to book 6. I have taken some clues from you because I have started to check my staples and got the larger size of rice and sugar this week. MuttleyFelix-- Welcome back. We missed you and stories about Benji. MK -- Thanks for setting up the threads each month. 3cats -- I am working to cut back on some of my expenses as well. I know I spent today but I am going to refocus my efforts. Time to get myself to bed. Only a few more weeks of early alarms.

When they send you a shut off notice 3 times in 18 months, you need to pay another security deposit. DS got 2 before I took over the bills and I got one when my payment on-line was scheduled for 3 days later than the due date. I pay on-line and didn't have it. DS didn't get paid on time which just through every thing off balance. Since this is my anniversary month with them for this house, that is when they sent it. I now have the money set aside for all the bills and by the end of this year, I should have at least 2 months of ALL bills in savings, including mortgage. 1 NSD

Morning ladies -- I am back for May. May is going to be an expensive month for me house wise. Due to several storm events in the area, I need to replace shingles. I would like to replace all the shingles once and for all, but we'll see what the insurance adjuster says today. My lawn mower died; I will be buying a new one this week. My sump pump is on its last legs; I just need the new one installed. My garbage disposal needs to be replaced. There's more, but I'll stop for now. I've been exercising. I've only lost 5 pounds, but I've lost 1.5 inches from my hips. I have at least another .5 inch to lose and then I'll decide if that's enough. My clothes are fitting differently; some are too big; good riddance to those. Many are looser and could become too big if I keep losing inches. A few items can be altered as I really like them. I wish everyone success with their goals!

Tried to post yesterday but apparently it didn't go through. Saturday was an exhausting 9 hour work day driving into the city for a conference. Then on the drive home I rolled down my window crossing the bridge and thought "I should go to the beach...." so I did.
Spent the night in Santa Cruz and I'll be packing up in a few hours to hold my team calls from the beach ;D I might even eat lunch here before heading home.
Yesterday, definite spend but worth it to swim in a hotel pool (although it was freezing), eat seafood on the wharf, photograph the boardwalk and then spend most of the night watching the news about Osama. I know we all have different and sometimes strong beliefs on political issues so I'll just say that I'm grateful we have a military that puts their lives on the line to protect our nation. Heard of a soldier who was asked "where were you on Sept 11th?" who replied "I was in sixth grade..." This has been a long time coming.

I'm here! I'm in for a frugal May as well. DH is taking a summer class, that he is getting paid for, but that money will basically just offset, the preschool expense that I hadn't budgeted for June & July. When we sat down and looked at the times, it didn't make sense to pull him out of school for 3 weeks, then put him back in for 2, then pull him out for 3 before DH has to be back to school. Plus this way DH can get the Honey do list done this summer.
I'm also on board for losing weight. I had been avoiding the scale for a while now. I made myself get on yesterday and the number was way higher than I expected it to be. So no more pop. (About 300 calories a day). And no more snacking. I posted my weight on sticky and put it on the bottom of my computer monitor to remind me why I'm doing this. My plan is to weigh on Sunday AM and replace the sticky with a lower number each week. I need to lose about 30 pounds, I thought is was only 20!
We had a good weekend. Spent Saturday AM at mini-D's school helping to plant the garden. We planted some of the normal stuff: tomatoes, peppers, garlic lettuce, strawberries and potatoes. Then we also did Blackberries, raspberries, cotton, peanuts, gourds and a bunch of flowers. The community garden here has a program for schools where they supplies the seeds and supplies. They will come back every couple weeks to check on the garden and provide suggestions on things that need to be done.
Yesterday we celebrated my mom's b-day. (She'd kill me if I mentioned the number. It is a significant one.) I made pork chops marsala from a cooking light recipe. They were really good.
Welcome back muttley!
3cats- Is that amount in addition to the $395, if so when did they return the $395? I understand about requiring a deposit for the shut off notices, but it should still be applied to your account at some point.

Goals: 20 NSD, 31 NEO days We didn't necessarily "slack" off in April but we didn't track our spending very well. This month DH and DS are all motivated to get back on track. We have renewed some of our goals and updated our family's monthly challenges. Ready to tackle the month. So far so good- yesterday we went to see Fast Five with a gift certificate left over from Christmas. Didn't buy a soda or snack. After the movie we returned some extra lawn edging that we had bought last weekend and didn't need all of. So we are actually "up" $37 so far for the month

May Goals: 15 CS + 12 NS = 27, 12 MOAN Current state: 1 CS, 1 MOAN
Friday night we had a big group dinner for all of our friends with April birthdays. It was a good time, though turned Friday in to a very long day. Saturday, DH and I made the decision to not do anything. Well, we did change the light fixture in our room (none of the bedrooms have stupid chandeliers anymore yay!), did some laundry, and took the dogs to the dog park. But that was it. So a nice no spend day to finish out the month of April. Yesterday, I got up and mowed the lawn while DH washed our secondary car, which we'll either be trying to sell or using again in the next couple of months. Then we went to the dog park (3rd day in a row) and grocery shopped. We ended the day at a friend's house having dinner and watching Game of Thrones (which is now our standard Sunday evening plan). Came home to the news about bin Laden. Overall, a pretty good weekend.
May is going to be an interesting month. I've given us a couple extra CS days to deal with it. Besides Mother's Day stuff for 3 moms, we have the MIL's birthday, the Cheese Festival (we go every year - its free, but we buy good cheese), we'll be driving down to Portland to help my cousin move in with us for the summer, and we'll be having people over for jambalaya/get together Memorial Day weekend. In addition, a play we both love opens in May (runs through July 3). The cousin would like to go to it, too, so I'm thinking we need to plan on that the first week she is here, before she has a job.
Then there's the car. We don't have to have anything done until mid-June, but we need to figure it out. Right now its not registered and is insured as being "in storage". Neither DH nor I like our second car, but when he's back in school full time, we'll need a second vehicle. They changed the bus routes around our house over the last year so that they are no longer a reasonable way for me to get to and from work. We're considering getting me a scooter or something along those lines, as my commute is only 3 miles each way. That should save us a lot in insurance and gas, as well as parking space. Over the summer, we'll have our car, my cousin's car, and the roomie's car, for however much longer we have him. If we still have 2 cars, that makes everything a little bit tighter. No matter what, we'll want to get a load of gravel and turn a small section of our yard (where we've been parking anyway, but technically its not legal) into a legal parking space by having it no longer be grass. Anyway, lots to think about and do.
muttley: welcome back 3cats: we're here for you. we know you can do it sapphire: good luck with all the home repair startsmart: Yay for the beach.

I also picked up smoked salmon and herring for my parents for watching my dogs. Yes, this is what counts for a thank you present in my family, stinky, stinky herring lol
I've got about 30 minutes to finish work before packing up my car and heading down to the beach!

I can tell by my poor, wet calendar that I made my goals for last month (for starters I actually have money left in the checkbook)- however, I can't read it because it's wet- it drank part of my coffee this morning.
I am going for 25 CS/NS this month again because I need to make sure I nip my spending totally in the bud before I finish school. Yesterday was a NS because I was sick and today will probably be a NS- I should be at DMs doing laundry. Tomorrow is bill day- which I don't count that which is budgeted in the regular budget, but I also have some budgeted "extras" I need to pick up.

Boy - I learned alot about my spending habits with one month on this board. Like everything, accountablilty creates awareness. I lost track at the end of the April because I did not really plan for easter. So this month I am going to do a better job of planning.
Mothers day and my DBF birthday are on the schedule. I could use some affordable ideas for a man that needs nothing. He knows Im tight on cash, and feels guilty if I spend on him. I read an article that what they really love is sex and food. I may use this as the basis for an plan.
DD#2 is returning from college this week, I have to go get her. We are debating stopping at a hotel or just making the trip straight thru. It's a five hour drive, but her last final ends at four and we have to pack the truck. My budget says.... drive thru. She does not have a summer job, and will be taking a full load of online courses, so its going to be a tough summer financially.
Medical bills are coming in from ladies surgery. Well over $1500 total. And I will have to schedule more surgery mid summer. ugh.
The girls dad, my ex, just walked away from his house and let the bank take it. Family chatter is that he is not showing up for work and drinking again. It makes me sad for my girls to watch this train wreck who is/should be their father. Trying to make up for this sadness by spending on my girls is an old problem for me.
I have a bum knee and my renewed gym activity has really upset this. So, I get to stick to yoga and swimming. I have set a goal to hit the gym each morning during the week. That will be tricky for me. Yesterday I spent six hours working in the yard. Today my self aches.
So - my goals for may are 13 CS days (staying on budget) 18 NS days. 20 MOAN.
Thank you all for your support.

Starting out the month on a good note - yesterday was a NS and today will most likely be a CS as long as I just get the haircut tonight and don't stop anywhere else.
Goals: With Derby, Mother's Day, my new nephew's arrival, Lil' Smokey's bday and Memorial Day - this month is going to be rough; just going to try to get as many as possible!

The electric company took the $395 to help pay down what DS owed them. It was absorbed in the billing. When I took over the bill, we owed over $1000 and now I have it down to $345 over what they are charging each month. Since I am on a payment plan, part of what I pay goes toward the past due and the current. I have been sending at least $50-$100 more each month but there was one month I just sent the basic and it was late. Hence the late notice that month. I have the payment for the month but I will wait for my next 2 checks before I send it in. I pay on line and I have until the 17th to pay it. I get paid every Friday and on the 13th I will post the payment to the electric company. Oh yeah, and my hours have been cut from 38 to 30.

I'm In for as many as I can get! Like many this is a busy month! Mother's Day Baseball/Softball Games/Trophies/Parties Orchestra Concert Niece's 16th Birthday Niece's 1st Birthday Sister's B-Day BFF's B-day Teacher Gifts Last Day of School Celebration 5k Race Memorial Day We went eight days without eating out! (well, DH and I did grab a couple of burritos one night after the kids went to bed because we had dinner at 5p that day and were starving by 9p, for less than $10) Otherwise Yippee...Eating out was starting to become a habit and we are still on a role. DH and I do have a date night this Saturday but that is planned for. I am hoping we can eat at home this entire week, leading up to Saturday. Thursday is going to be the real test. DD has a game at 6p a little further from our house and DS has a game at 7p at a different park! Luckily DH plans to be off work early so we can divide and conquer. I guess dinner will just be at 5p again but that cancels my Cinco De Mayo feast I was planning on ~ not to be confused with the Mexican food we eat every other day I NEED to run 2.5 miles today! I need to find a way to make running fun and exciting again. It is hard for me to get excited after running 26.2 miles. It takes away the joy of coming home and saying "I just ran 6 miles today' or "Holy Smokes, I just ran 16 miles today!" I guess I can concentrate on getting faster but I need to just get running first to avoid injury! I guess after my plans of training for a TRI went bust I have lost motivation as well. It has become impossible to find a reasonable priced/located gym with a pool. I LOVE my current gym and the cost but their is not a pool! DH is working out a deal with the 55+ RV Housing Development next door to his work to let me use their pool! I love him! Happy No Spending (SS: Well Said!)

I guess I forgot my goals in my earlier post.
I'm going for 15 NS 5 CS, 20 NEO, 10 MOAN's (I'll start small and work my way up.) I'm at 1 NS
3cats- That makes more sense now.
azmom- way to go on the NEO's. I've got to get my menu planning back on track. So much easier to eat at home when we know what we are going to eat.
We've got left over pork marsala tonight and I have to make enchiladas for my brother's family. He has surgery on Thursday.

i need to vent for a moment.
a very good friend of mine is getting married this year. she's such a good friend, in fact, that i am in her wedding. which i totally don't mind and have been financially preparing for since she asked me to be in the wedding. i was also fully prepared to bring a nice shower gift. but then. i looked at her registry.
now, i know my friend has very expensive, champagne taste (that her parents help subsidize, but i digress) but i was not prepared for the $155 covered butter dish. or the $150 salt and pepper shakers. or the $325 picture frame. or the $35 plate (yes, each plate is $35). you get the point. this is just freaking ridiculous! i love my friend but seriously--did she not consider people's budgets when she made this registry?! (i did just find $20 mixing bowls and $17 measuring spoons. i think i need to jump on those. they're the least expensive things on the entire registry.)
oh, and i'm in for may (especially if i'm going to need to buy one of the above mentioned gifts). i just need to set some goals.

Mrs. Lynch: I just passed on a $16 covered butter dish from Anthropology that I really wanted and decided to wait and hope it goes on sale! I just couldn't do it even though DH gave me the go ahead Good luck planning and budgeting for this wedding.

Mrs. Lynch, but you are in the wedding, isn't that your gift? That is what I have always done. If I was a guest she would get a plate from me and a plate from my fiance. I spend $50/person on average when I go to weddings.

This is just a drive by but I had to post this before i forget it. Mrs Lynch, Get the mixing bowl and include some of your favorite recipes to personalize it. Or even just a book of your favorite recipes lovingly copied into it. I always considered a registry suggestions for those who didn't want to spend the time and effort to give a truly personal gift.

ses--i love that idea! it's perfect. especially since my friend does not know how to cook. all at. gin--the cost of the plate was not us having to pay to attend. it is the cost per plate for the set of dishes she wants. i do not consider being in a wedding a gift so i will need purchase a gift. for her wedding, we will be giving her cash. azmom--i would probably pass on at $16 butter dish as well. i just can't justify it. well, there might be some circumstances but not many.

dakota - We can be No Soda buddies for May. 2 days now and feeling good about it. mrsl - That is crazy about the wedding. I can't imagine asking for stuff that expensive. For every wedding we have been invited to for the last 3 years, I have done a cookbook for the bride and groom. I type up the recipes on letter size paper and then get a 3 ring binder and place the recipes in sheet protectors. So far everyone has loved them and it is one of a kind. Then I usually get some sort of kitchen thing to go with it. Today was a cruddy day. Work was crazy and then shortly after we got back from lunch (which my boss paid for), my office manager got the call that her brother had committed suicide. She's his next of kin, so my boss drove her to her brother's house and I followed in her car. Her husband is her brother's employer and he found the body. I took her car back to her house and my boss took me back to the office. Then I got an email just before I left work that my friend who has been battling overian cancer for 5 years is getting close to the end. She has fought it so hard and anyone else would have given up and died 3 years ago. But she has hung in there and has had the most amazing attitude. She got to see both of her daughters graduate high school. She got to see her oldest daughter get married and have a baby. She got to see her oldest step-daughter get married. It is still sad. It was just a sad day all around and it started off so good with news of Bin Laden's death. I couldn't help thinking as I was holding Ben that the world is just a little bit safer place for him to grow up in.

gin- I love it! mrslynch- If I had asked for something like that either of the times I have been married my DM and grandparents would have beat me! My first set of dishes may have cost $35 as a set of 4 (Corelle).
