MU I agree on your point -People can change. I have changed the way I do some things. But based on my own evaluations. For example, over time I have actually gotten much less tolerant of Mud. To torment people continuously the way he does and consider it entertainment is not acceptable to me. Calling it a board persona doesn't cut it. He considers himself a master manipulator, but it really doesn't take any talent to insult people to make them mad.

RDT loves Later. Despite his complaining. There's a very thin line between "LOVE" & "HATE".... I don't like to cross that line...

If I can chime in, MU did offer a couple of days ago to leave past history from the old board back there where it belongs and start fresh. What's the point in dwelling on what was?

People don't change so easily. They can try for a while, but their personalities seep through.
On a somewhat related note...
It's been interesting reading this board and noticing how everyone is coping with the imminent shut down of the old MSN boards and being dethroned even if it's only temporary.
and it's all temporary. The cliques will resume shortly if they haven't already.
It's funny how some people are telling others on various threads to shut up and "get over it."
But tis the season of Festivus.
"And at the Festivus...you gather your [message board] family around, and tell them all the ways they have disappointed you over the...year!"
"The tradition of Festivus begins with the Airing of Grievances. I got a lot of problems with you people!"
~ Frank Costanza, Seinfeld
LOL
There'll be no shutting up till aggrieved people have their say. It's been entertaining so far.

Oh and Deb, it was more a general question. I've seen a lot of people say this is a chance to start fresh and I don't think you just wipe out history that way. Not just on message boards but in life in general.

Have you ever had a "fresh start" with the same people that turned out any different?
Short answer is No people generally don't change. The one way that you can change them is to make the process painful enough for them to modify their behavior. In real life that's pretty simple, you take them outside & hurt them. They will then almost always see the light & back off although a few of them will still try to push it. Once you make it clear to them that your willing to go outside with them again they back off. Sadly on these boards all you can do is suspend them. Suspension rarely works for even a week because it's not painful enough to get their attention. Banning doesn't help them either BUT it does remove them from being a pain in the butt for everybody else.

tometrader- you bring up an interesting point, about a dying MSN board and perhaps the psychology of loss[position/status/etc].
There are various phases of grieving and dealing with death.

Debmd I agree. Loss of position and status seems to sum it up very well. If anyone wanted a fresh start, all they had to do was log on over here with a new name and ID.

All that does is hide from people who they are dealing with. You are playing with an unfair advantage because you have all the info you have gained about the other posters while taking away what they know about you.

Unfair advantage? You make it sound like a game or a war you are participating in, instead of an exchange of ideas or debating topics.

In debating topics it is an advantage to know about the person you are debating with. And exchanging ideas tends to be an accumulation of all discussions with someone.

All will be shown in TIME with this fresh start. To all posters ...I wouldn't slam them until I saw the evidence.

become your sweet self again Later.
It may not be possible for you...but I'm hoping.

I've been through several message board deaths and rebirths to watch for the typical patterns of establishment that will follow this current disequilibrium.
So far there is nothing new under the sun. Still, the social scientist in me finds it fascinating.
My prediction is that in about a week, maybe a week and a half old norms will resume.
The majority of lurkers that are coming out will go back to lurking. The old regulars will resume their positions, minus the mods. For mods, it's just a well overdue changing of the guards.
People right now are trying to bring as much of their favorite "furniture" with them (old threads, old stories).
People are trying to make this new place as familiar as possible. They're not really trying to start over because they didn't want to start over in the first place. We were or are in the process of being evicted.

I think this akin to moving from one house to another. You don't necessarily want to start over -- for the most part, people liked what we had over at MSN. Why fix something that isn't broken?
