I specifically said it shouldn't be banned. I am just very anti-established med just assuming that everyone should circumcise... should vaccinate... should this/that/the other thing... etc. I'm for informed consent... the giving of unbiased, comprehensvive information so that indivdiuals can make the best decisions possible for themselves and their family...

The doctor told us when our son was born that circumcision was a safe guard against an area that could harbor harmful bacteria. So we allowed him to procede. Not aware of any harmful effects from the procedure. However when I was Circumcisized as a child I am sure the doctor made a mistake and cut off to much.

Another liberal that doesn't quite understand the difference between unfavorable law and unconstitutional law. What a shame.....

If it weren't for this barbaric practice, we could all be Johnnie Holmes!

I see this as proof positive that San Francisco has more people per capita who will sign ANY PETITION than pretty much any other city in the United States. I remember that Penn & Teller Bull Shit show where they got a bunch of earth day environmentalists to sign a petition banning Banning Dihydrogen Monoxide...aka Water. From Wiki: Dihydrogen monoxide: * is called "hydroxyl acid", the substance is the major component of acid rain. * contributes to the "greenhouse effect". * may cause severe burns. * is fatal if inhaled. * contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape. * accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals. * may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes. * has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients. Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used: * as an industrial solvent and coolant. * in nuclear power plants. * in the production of Styrofoam. * as a fire retardant. * in many forms of cruel animal research. * in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical. * as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.

You know circumcision was originally started as a method to 'cure' masturbation... Here are some myths and facts on circumcision... good documentation to start you reading if you are interested.... www.nocircpa.org/4642.html

You think hygeine in African and hygeine in America may be a bit different in terms of ease of achieving? Cleanliness is more of an issue than foreskin... and I'm not sure i'd generalize all African studies to the US... especially given our AIDS tranmission patterns differ significantly...
If the CDC comes out with recommendations i'll consider all evidence... they are still debating.... primarily because:
A CDC study presented at an HIV/AIDS conference in Atlanta in the same week as the recommendation controversy indicates that circumcision will do little to prevent those cases.
The CDC study surveyed roughly 4,900 men who had anal sex with HIV-positive male partners. The infection rate was about 3.5 percent whether the men were circumcised or not—there was no measurable difference. As the study concluded, circumcision "is not considered beneficial" in preventing the spread of HIV among MSM, meaning that the CDC is rethinking its guidelines. According to Peter Kilmarx, chief of epidemiology for CDC's division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, the CDC may still recommend circumcision for infants and high-risk heterosexual men, or may simply counsel improved education for doctors and parents about risks and benefits. Even so, the inapplicability of circumcision to the majority of HIV transmissions in the U.S. throws into doubt the wisdom of making a recommendation at all.

You finally grew one Archie? Good for you! I thought he meant his wife was going to take it off the shelf and let him wear it for a little while....for old times sake. Who knew?

oped- it was a US study that was cited. So, differences in infection rates were all derrived from the United States subjects.

Well it sounds like San Francisco is now going to overcome Wisconsin as the nation's leading producer of cheese...but not in a good way. Lends new meaning to the "Real California Cheese" commercials on TV...

I don't see this as a liberal v. conservative issue. I don't see this as a religion v. medical science issue. I don't see this as a male v. female issue. I see this as proof positive that San Francisco has more people per capita who will sign ANY PETITION than pretty much any other city in the United States. That's +1 for Karma

It's more of a hygiene issue, at least that's what I have always though anyway. Don't wait until your son is older though in my opinion...if I had to make the decision today I'd be like "You're gonna do what!" lol. Just do it when they are a baby and won't hate you forever. I don't remember any pain from mine, tho when it happened I didn't walk for 2 years.

To NORMAL people this is not a liberal/conservative issue, but I did prove that this "movement" is a "progressive" move. Seems here on the board it is more about education and choice, as it should be. These folks are just progressive activists against circumcision.

People in SF seem to spend an awful lot of their time thinking about dicks and the things people do with them. I guess the potholes are all filled and the homeless all have places to stay, so they have the luxury of thinking about dicks all the time. Wouldn't be my first choice. Second either. But, then again, maybe that's why I've never wanted to live in SF.

Hey, verrip-- have you ever heard Michael Savage rant about SF-- where he lives?? It is really funny. No matter what people think of Savage, just the THOUGHT of him living in SF is a riot!!!! ;D

What a shame.....Clearly it is unconstitutional and would quickly be struck down by state or federal courts if ever passed. It is a great example of the lunacy that local governments can engage in. Fortunately we have levels of government that aren't so close to local eccentricities so that people are not force to move to other cities or states.

Ok. We may have to think this thru before we say its 'unconstitutional'... What we call female genital mutilation is called female circumcision in some parts of the world... do you really want to say that it is unconstitutional to ban certain procedures? ...

I believe that if someone used the argument, "Well, in some parts of the world it is called .... so therefore it is the same and shouldn't be banned" in court, it wouldn't get them far.

Ok.... but where do we draw that line? I'm guessing there are places/peoples where you say... oh yeah, we take boys when they are born and cut off part of their penis... and they might call that male genital mutilation...

You know-- I let my girls CHOOSE to get their ears pierced when they were able to do so, but this is a procedure that is a big deal later, but not so much newborn. What if a man wished it, or got a terrible infection like the guy I knew that got done as an adult?? I can't believe this topic is still going on our fickle board.

<<Clearly it is unconstitutional and would quickly be struck down by state or federal courts if ever passed.>>
Of course, but that matters naught to some fringe groups so long as it gets publicity for their cause.
