dancinmama, we have given up on visiting abroad in our retirement. with the unplanned purchase of that used motorhome this past summer and now RV loan payments, we will be tooling around the USA visiting kids, grandkids, MIL, BIL, friends, close friends we consider as our kids, national parks, local stuff, fishing next to a passing stream. We won't be tooling around too much other than visiting family when gas hits $5 a gal. and if it gets too much higher than that, we'll all hafta visit by skype.

Great way for me to post for the first time on this forum, hanging out my dirty laundry, lol! -private liberal arts college for a degree in recreation -made enough on first rental house sale that we could have paid off our residence. Listened to how paying off your mortgage was stupid. Instead, tried to use the money "smarter" and ended up frittering it away here and there, financing another house, etc. Live and learn, right? Fast forward 10 years, I'm separated, and no longer have any house in my name. About to change that, or not... on the fence about if I want that responsibility again.

Forgive me YM, I: - Took advantage of Cash for Clunkers
- Once bought a timeshare during one of those "visit for the weekend on us/buy now or it's gone" sales pitches in Hilton Head
- Support a SAHM
- Loaned my cousin - an artist! - money and expected it back
- Just re-floored my entire house, although I did it myself
- ...and in repentance of future sins...we are planning to start homeschooling

Okay, here's my list: - bought a brand new car (but 6 years ago, probably won't be buying new again) - went over my credit limit and closed the card before paying it off (several years ago at this point, NEVER did that again) - don't have everything on autopay (but haven't paid anything late in 8-ish years) - had kind of a pricey wedding, paid for in cash though - actually go to restaurants

My sins: Made extra payments to my mortgage even though the interest rate was low. Put two adult children through college and allowed them to live at the dorms and apartments for 4 years at our expense. Posted links to this forum, but didn't know it was against MSN rules, LOL. My Bad. Gave money to my niece and nephew for school and other things because their dad died a few years ago. I do not expect any money back, and it was not a loan. Told my 25 year old DD NOT to move in with her BF and told the BF that "She wasn't rent to own," LOL. Not that they will even listen for a minute. We bought 2 new cars in 2010. We love our cable, but not the bill. It costs about $100.00. I went to Hawaii for a long-time friend's 60th birthday and stayed for 2 weeks. My DH patiently waited for me to come home, LOL. I bought 2 slabs of granite and had the fabricator make countertops for my kitchen, bathroom, and hallway cabinet. I did not like tile. On the bright side, I paid cash and had it installed the week before Christmas to get a better price for the labor. I bought expensive gifts for our two children for Christmas: a Dyson vacuum cleaner and a Sealy bed.

1. Loaned money to family. Still trying to get repaid so I can pay off #2. 2. Racked up CC debt again 3. Went over my Christmas budget...again this year. 4. Racked up some student loan debt even though I had a great scholarship due to poor planning. I'm working on it!

I shall confess my YM sins:
1. We stretched beyond the recommended 2X annual income when we took out the mortgage. Our incomes increased after we got the mortgage, so it’s within the guidelines now. (Came in right before the surge in prices, so at least the home value is 110%+ greater than when we got it.)
2. It’s not a McMansion (actually, it’s nothing special), but it sure cost a lot according to YM standards (but not regionally).
3. It’s a 30-year mortgage and we’re not prepaying it – or is that a WIRR sin… And we’re not sure if we’ll ever acquire any rental properties.
4. Unwilling to move to a lower COLA due to both our families living here. Our kids growing up around their relatives is non-negotiable for us. (However, family members all work so we don’t have free childcare, see #8.)
5. Wills haven’t been set up yet (aiming to finally get it done this year).
6. Bought a new vehicle and took out a 5+ year loan and didn’t pay if off early (okay maybe a couple of months). Had the money for it in savings the whole time but wanted the cash on hand instead. We did put down $10K though. No plans for another vehicle for at least another 5-7 years though since I’m quite happy with this one. I’ll do the same thing again for the next one, unless the interest rates are really high.
7. Not contributing the max limits on the Roths or 401k accounts yet (see #8).
8. Had 2 daycare payments that totaled about the same as our P&I mortgage payment.
9. We shop at Costco a lot (it's close by).
10. Signed up for a few CCs and let DBF (now DH) be an additional cardholder on them(which he forgot to pay a few times which ended up making my credit scores lower than his when we later applied for the mortgage).
11. Went to a private college, had about $20K in student loans and cc debt from college, and then my first real job had an annual income that was a few K more than my debts.

Because most people don't just drop dead while they're working but rather stop working because they are seriously ill and then pass away. Once they stop working, they lose their coverage through work, leaving themselves vulnerable.

Forgive me, fellow posters, for I am about to sin grievously.
Yesterday DH got a brochure from a cruise line that does river cruises in Europe. We've never been on a cruise- the ships most people take are floating shopping malls where you're herded into hour- long queues to go ashore. These are smaller ships, not focused on 24/7 binge eating, with much more flexibility and probably no party-till-U-puke types. They are also dreadfully expensive. We salivated at the section with the 12-day cruise from Kiev to Odessa. We reminded ourselves that our 10-year wedding anniversary was in 2013 so maybe then... I put the brochure in the trash after making a mental note of the company name.
The brochure made its way out of the trash last night. We looked at the pictures again. We're going to do this. Not this year, but maybe 2012 or 2013. And rather than save for it I may take it out of the retirement funds. The balance should hit $2 million by the end of this year so I think it's time to deplete it a little.

One of my favorite trips ever was a river cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow. The pace was totally different than an ocean cruise. There was always something to look at on the shore of the river and there was much more time spent off the ship exploring. It was well worth the price.

One of my favorite trips ever was a river cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow. <snip> It was well worth the price. No, kari, no! You're no help! You're supposed to tell me that this is a Bad Idea and that if we raid the retirement funds for this we'll be eating dog food in our old age! ;D But seriously- DH and I are likely to do this next year. We both just latched onto the idea so strongly that it feels right. DH is 72 and slowing down a bit and one of the things I read that attracted me to this type of cruise is that the hardy souls can go out in the early AM and explore, and then there's a guided tour later in the day. I guess with the smaller boats you have easier access to the port and don't need to wait for tenders to get you back and forth. We structure our trips so that DH has the flexibility to kick back in comfortable surroundings when he needs it but I can still go out and amuse myself. And we're fascinated with Russian history. Woo-hoo!

basically all of my ym sins can be summed up with one catch-all phrase....."I should not be left unattended at Target."

Thanks, oped. We have a lot of research to do. I just checked CruiseCritic and there's a lot to consider in selecting a line and a ship, as well as climate, how expensive a room we want, etc. Maybe it's a good thing we're not going to do it this year, although I know we may want to book within the next few months. But now I have to get back to work or there won't be any money to spend on travel!
