The house wrens are finally here singing their little heads off! My old boss used to call them "beaks with wings". A very apt title. Hard to believe all that noise coming from such a tiny thing.

A friend from the UK posted this on another thread of mine (on Crapsters). I'm old enough to remember almost everything mentioned here. Including the time before TV <gasp>.
Close your eyes..... And go back....
Before the Internet or the Mac, Before the semi-automatic and crack
Before chronic and indo before sega or super nintendo
way back........
i'm talkin' bout hide and go seek at dusk. sittin' on the porch, hot bread and butter.
the good humor man, red light, green light. chocolate milk, lunch tickets, penny candy in a brown paper bag.
playin' pinball in the corner store. hopscotch, butterscotch, double dutch, jacks, kickball, dodgeball, y'all ! mother may I ? red rover and roly poly
hula hoops and sunflower seeds, jolly ranchers, banana splits, wax lips and mustaches
runnin' through the sprinkler the smell of the sun and lickin' salty lips....
wait........
watchin' saturday morning cartoons, fat albert, road runner, he-man, the three stooges, and bugs,
or back further, listening to superman on the radio
catchin' lightening bugs in a jar, playin' sling shot. when around the corner seemed far away, and going downtown seemed like going somewhere.
bedtime, climbing trees, an ice cream cone on a warm summer night chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe butter pecan a cherry or vanilla coke from the fountain at the corner drug store
a million mosquito bites and sticky fingers, cops and robbers, Cowboys and Indians, sittin' on the curb, playin' barefoot in the rain
jumpin' down the steps, jumpin' on the bed. pillow fights
runnin' till you ran out of breath laughing so hard your stomach hurt being tired from playin'.... remember that?
I ain't finished just yet.....
Eating Kool-Aid with sugar. Remember when there two types of sneakers for girls and boys (Keds & P.F. Flyers) and the only time you wore them at school was for "gym." When it took five minutes for the TV to warm up, if you even had one. When nearly every everyone's mom was at home.
When nobody owned a purebred dog. When a quarter was a decent allowance, and another quarter was a miracle. When milk went up one cent and everyone talked about it for weeks? When you'd reach into the muddy gutter for a penny.
When girls neither dated nor kissed until late high school, if then. when your mom wore nylons that came in two pieces. When all of your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done every day.
When you got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and pumped, without asking, for free, every time. and you didn't pay for air. and, you got trading stamps to boot! when laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box.
when any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry groceries, and , nobody cared, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.
When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents.
When they threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed....and did ! When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home.
Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! And some of us are still afraid of em
Didn't that feel good...just to go back and say, yeah, I remember that ! There's nothing like the good old days! they were good then, and they're good now when we think about them.
Share some of these thoughts with a friend who can relate, then share it with someone that missed out on them.

I remember, as well, Peg and deminmaine. Don't remember Superman on the radio, but I do remember The Shadow, and The Green Hornet, and Amos and Andy. Good times! ;D

Sushi met his first dog last night.....a Pitt/Lab mix. All my other cats would have run upstairs and hid under the bed, but Sushi stood his ground and followed it from room to room. He slashed at the dog's nose and boxed its wagging tail. After dominanace was established, they got along OK. Which is good, because they'll be spending a lot of time together this summer.

Oooh! Good for Sushi! I'm sure they'll have a lot of fun together. How'd the dog take it?

The dog seemed puzzled, because she lives with her best friend, another cat. Sushi didn't exactly want to be buddies. It was more "This is MY house. Piss off!" It went better than expected, which is a relief. They'll be spending a lot of time at the cottage together. I think it will be OK.

Sounds good, welts. Glad the dog has had a cat friend. The cat will adjust over time, I imagine. Sometimes, dogs really get their feelings hurt when they find out they're not all that at the hands of a cat! You can almost see the wheels turn: "I could probably eat that troublesome critter, but it appears to have thorns!"

This particular group hasn't, except seeing them through the window ... like the dog next door, a pitbull who thinks he's a love bug. The younger two stare and chatter, and the older two just ignore dogs. Since they don't go outside, they've never met one up close and personal.

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone. The sun is shining, the sky is blue and all's right in my world!! And I MUST remember to checkout the Super Moon tonight. I remember several years ago driving home from somewhere and seeing this big round ball is the sky. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. All I could think about was the stories of asterodis striking the earth!! Of course, it was a super moon but I didn't know it right then!. Why has it taken so long for the government to put the al-Qaida terrorists on trial for 9/11?? This should have been over and done with years ago!! And also the Scott Peterson case. He's spent the past year in jail. What has taken so long? Isn't there someting in the constitution about a speed trial? It's Derby day - time for the Kentudky Derby - the run for the roses, 1st of the Triple Crown races. Mint juleps, big hats, the singing of "My Old Kentudky Home" and the call to the post. Love it.
I hope you all have a grrrrrrrreat Saturday.
Mystery Persons tonight at 5 p.m. EST, 10 p.m. UK time

Have you ever heard peacocks screaming? That's what it sounds like at my house the last few days. I knew what I was getting into, but damn! I thought maybe he was sick, but everything appears to be in working order and I just caught him gnawing on a frozen turkey on the kitchen table, so that can't be it. I need to invest in some noise-cancelling headphones.

LOL Women and cats...but in my neck of the woods it's also women and horses. Why do little girls like Ponys so much...I have two boys so I'm safe that way, neither of them has shown John Wayne tendencies yet. A big fishbowl with plenty of colorful fish...that's the ticket...still, this is cute.

That pic is adorable, Robert. Kids do love animals and that pony seems to be returning the favor in spades.

Sorry, Weltz. That was borderline for our PG-13 guidelines, so I made that photo go POOF.

I really need to tread lightly here Before I go watch my geek movie..."The Avengers". Horses are masculine and well endowed, they are also feminine and graceful...it's a win win, depending on how you look at it. Enjoy your weekend.

I have a bunch of Facebook friends who have all posted that they really liked The Avengers. It sounds like it will be quite popular.
I heard actual peacocks screaming ALL day yesterday (they have a flock of 20 or so where I spent the day) .... so I can now say that their screaming is a bit ... unnerving.

When I lived in Rancho Palos Verdes, I heard them screaming all the time. "Unnerving" is being polite.

Sushi saved my life last night. I had roasted a turkey, and there were all these stubborn bits on the bottom of the pan. I threw in two cups of water, and set it on the stovetop to boil a bit. I sat down to watch some TV, and somehow nodded off. I woke up to Sushi screaming bloody murder in my ear, and the house was full of roiling, noxious grey smoke. It burned the lungs, and so thick that I couldn't see my hand in front of me. The pan had burned right through and the burner was on fire. I managed to put it out with the fire extinguisher, but Lord only knows what would have happened if the cat didn't wake me up. We just sat outside and looked at the moon while the house aired out. You couldn't go back in there without choking.

I cried, too, molly. What a thoughtful thing to do for someone who truly appreciated and enjoyed it. It takes so little.
Heh. Now, I'm crying again!

Even the news anchor was choking back tears when I saw it tonight. Such a small gesture, yet it meant so much.

I can imagine the newscaster was having a difficult time, welts. I've often wondered how they report some of the things they report without bawling like babies. This was very, very touching. Acts of pure kindness often are.
