Ah, politics and the holidays. It's one of the reasons my SIL is not welcome here (she is a "you're going to hell if you don't agree with my politics" type of person). I can agree to disagree with you, but not go to that extent. Plus, she was involved in criminal activity involving a minor a few year ago, so she's REALLY unwelcome mainly for that. She and my brother go to my niece's house in Orlando for the day itself, and then have to go to his MIL's tiny one bedroom apartment Friday. Somehow, they used to stuff 10 people in that place around a coffee table for what he described as an "inedible mess they moved around their plates while huddled in a claustrophobic cube."
We're doing turkey breast, steamed green beans, roasted sweet potatoes with butter and brown sugar, cranberry compote with oranges, three-bread stuffing (wheat, cornbread and white), and pumpkin pie for DH. I have some nice wines, so I will probably open one for dinner.
It's just two of us, unless my friend and his daughter come over; he is having eye surgery next Monday, so I offered him dinner.

I've just ordered my food for next week and I will get to have sweet potatoes. I miss sweet potatoes.
I miss chicken and noodles but very few of the cousins learned how to make them like our moms and grandmas did. I did not learn.

Going to my brothers. Brining my dad and my dog. Only because he always brings his dog to my house. I'm bringing stuffing and squash. Dad is bringing tortiere (meat pie) and ham. My niece (sister's daughter) will also be joining us. We will be missing one of my brother's kids because she is in the military. Inquiring minds want to know - where do you get the 100-gallon Ziploc bags for this? Walmart.

happyhoix, I will share your rhubarb pie with great pleasure. There is something sublime about a warm slice of very tart pie with a cold chunk of very sweet hard sauce melting on top. My in laws think it’s a ham pie with butter on top and won’t touch it. I think they fear a Yankee trick. 🤡

We'll do Thanksgiving Day at my in-law's house. I have to make pie. Then we have my parents over on another night - probably Wednesday or Friday or Sunday. No firm plans. My mom buys the food, and I cook / host. It works well for us. My mom always overcooks the turkey.

My son is working on Thanksgiving, so this is the first time my core-four won’t be together for Thanksgiving. My sister is hosting, so we will go over there. I’m hoping my kids will find another time that weekend when we can have dinner. I’m cool making a smaller version of Thanksgiving dinner. That said, we used to have roast beef, then my daughter stopped eating beef - so we had beef and turkey. I’m not sure I am up for quite that much food. I bet my kids would take it all home, so maybe we will.

I mean, as long as you don't cook them too, it won't hurt anything. Eh…one of them might get a rash.

I have no idea. we haven't been invited anywhere, and I'm not hosting anyone. my parents came down for Canadian Thanksgiving last month. maybe I take the pups down to an Outer Cape beach and release them to run wherever haha. I can pick up Chinese takeout on the way home....and bathe them on Friday. You are officially invited to my house.

A quiet day. DF will prepare the food. It will include turkey breast, stuffing, gravy, and sweet potatoes.

Why does green bean casserole have such a negative reputation these past few years? It's quite good.

I like mushrooms and mushroom soup! And if you like mushrooms in your soup, make the recipe below. I came across it several weeks ago and I have made it twice. Quite tastey. Why does green bean casserole have such a negative reputation these past few years? It's quite good. I immediately reject any recipe that has cream of barf soup in it. Green bean casserole is predigested, unhealthy vegetables. Just slurp the gravy out of the boat. That said - my problem with Thanksgiving as a whole is that everything single dish is wet and mushy. Turkey and stuffing soaked in gravy, Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes (with marshmallows) jellied cranberries, all the vege casseroles - green bean, corn, carrots, etc. I have been replacing dishes with similar things with a variety of textures. Things like a roasted butternut squash with a nut crust, twice baked potatoes with crispy skins, salad with fresh crunchy apples, Moroccan carrots and green beans almondine, using fresh beans and cooking them so they are nice and crunchy. I’m just fancy that way.

My Dolly Parton cookbook has a southern green bean "casserole" I'm interested in making. All fresh and no cream of yuck soup.

I'm working, but we'll eat a meal still. Ham, mashed and gravy, mac and cheese (we're not traditionalists because picky eaters), fresh cranberry relish with clementine in it, rolls. Desserts from Kneader's.

If I were making something like a traditional turkey-based Thanksgiving menu for the two of us, it might be a roasted turkey breast, pumpkin risotto, charred Brussels sprouts, maybe a whole berry cranberry sauce. We love green beans but only crisp-tender. A couple of years back I did a raw Brussels sprout salad which was the bomb. I'm with you on the texture thing - I can't do all mushy stuff. Even with our all appetizer menu for this year, I've tried to balance textures and flavors.

So I am making roasted Brussels sprouts with sweetened balsamic vinegar and dried cranberries.

My husband smokes it and we hang outside all day.

Brussel sprouts browned in a skillet with butter and apples is the bomb.
I've also done it with pomegranate seeds.
