Update: 8 of 10 NSD, 4 of 8 MOAN Still have this awful cough/sore throat combination, so still now MOANing for me. Wednesday was an NSD. Yesterday, since I stayed home sick, we went grocery shopping and got gas. I'm back at work today, though not thrilled about it, but I have meetings.
azmon: Our roller derby season tickets, the occassional concert to see bands we really love, hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas for our friends. All of these things are luxuries in their way, and I do my best to include them in the budget. If being on a budget resulted in us never getting to do anything we wanted, the budget would fail. I consider paying for the occassional luxury a necessity for keeping us on the path.

Sheila: At least they postponed your school. They NEVER do that for us. And the kids get on their buses at 7:10 am! This morning we had DS#1 wait until the bus was turning the corner before his stop to go. Currently it is -15 degrees and I have NO idea what the temp was at 7:00!
azmom: I paid for DS#1s Karate and it was not a need or want. Well in some ways I viewed it as a need. We also put DS#1 in baseball last year and are trying to figure out if we are going to do so again this year. With DF still being unemployed we are just not sure although ours is only $75 and they provide a hat and t-shirt. I am going to talk to him and see if he wants to be in it or not.
Warning Rambling ahead: DS#2's special ed teacher called me to see if we were planning on putting him in Kindergarten next year. The district is doing their planning for next year. We are a big maybe LOL. They may put him on the Kindergarten list and have his homeroom be his preschool special ed room. So then if he is ready for kindergarten during the year they will transition him. Since they have to provide schooling to special students until they are 21 I am not worried about when he starts kindergarten. I have no plans on him starting 1st grade until 2013.
Hey We need Nitza to come back to see if she can break this word limit! LOL

MK - awww I miss nitza! She must be doing all that fun down to the deadline wedding stuff at this point.
azmom - hmm good question. I guess certain foods, like my popcorn and brie, are more wants than needs but they bring such pleasure for so little money. My weight watchers meetings, although I am squandering some of the progress I made last summer and need to make that fee worth it again. My coffee. We don't really have hobbies that cost money for us at the moment...

sheila/mk: I grew up in eastern MT, and they never started our schools late. The only time schools closed due to weather was when I was in 7th grade, for 2 days. It was so cold over the enitre state that the governor declared a state of emergency and closed all the schools because the state couldn't afford to heat them. (It also meant we didn't have to make up the days at the end of the year.) Otherwise, in my town, they just cancelled recess. When you got dropped off in the morning, you walked in and sat on the floor in the hallway until classes started. Then during "recess" you stayed in your classroom and played a came like heads up 7 up. Of course, I school district didn't bus anyone unless they lived at least 15 miles outside city limits - and that only applied to the highschool, where kids could walk in the building as soon as they got there regardless of the weather. I only ever missed school due to weather one other time. We had a blizzard the first weekend in May when I was in 4th grade. The drifts were up to 7' high, and there was a good 3' of ground cover all over our neighborhood. Still not really certain how my dad made it up the hill in his little Courier. I remember trying to let our dog (a Visla) out to do her business. She jumped in to the drif that had built up against our sliding class door, and then was stuck. THe snow was so wet and dense that she didn't sink through it. We had to dig her out, then dig her a path to the yard.

Update: Not really sure, best I can figure at the moment is 19 CSD, 20 NEO ........ and yet I feel as though I am sinking rapidly. For instance, I am already $100 over budget for groceries and still have 10 more days to go in the month, and need to pick up some things tomorrow. startsmart - I hope your grandmother continues to improve. Hang in there. Muttley - Happy Birthday to little Ben redwagon - Be careful on the drive up here - the roads are a MESS and the temps are slated to drop to single digits overnight all weekend which will not help things much. Snow - We are getting another 5"-8" today and the girls have yet ANOTHER snow day!!! Honestly people .... for 6" of snow? They had two days off last week for snow, Monday was a holiday, Tuesday off because of a storm and now today .... AND this was supposed to be finals week. Meanwhile I think our building would have to collapse after being sat on by Godzilla before they would ever close us for a day. Other updates - feel free to skip I am scheduled to have my Whistler's quilt photographed next Saturday the 29th - but suddenly I HATE her face and have no idea how, or if, I should fix it. And how am I feeling about submitting this quilt to Vermont for judging and the show ... am I ready to face that stress again only to have three faceless people dismiss my work as "not good enough" I am still feeling overwhelmed and stressed about the things I blogged about last week - and the Hawk item would still head the list followed closely by money stress. Which makes me question having another student next year. I love having two - but is it realistic to do this again? Can I figure out what went wrong with this winter's budget so I don't repeat the same mistake(s) .... if there WERE mistakes? Most likely I will not be able to join you in The Badlands which is a bummer for me - I remember going there when I was about 8 and being in awe of their very different kind of beauty. But not only are those days SUPPOSED to be when I go to the quilt festival in Vermont - but during those days are the scheduled departures of the girls back home. Which means I will most likely not be able to do Vermont either. AND .... I think I am really ready to stop smoking. On January 3rd I went for the first time ever to an accupuncturist. Which for me was very odd ... as I really really REALLY hate needles unless I have threaded them and they are being used to make a quilt. I need to go back for another session but I have noticed a decrease in the number of cigarettes I am smoking in an average day. I want to quit for several reasons but what really grabbed my motivation was having a co-worker in her late 30s have a heart attack before Christmas (among other things she smokes a lot) and in the last four months alone my spreadsheet shows I have spent and average of $165 a MONTH on cigarettes. That's just ridiculous. I have so many better things I could do with that money. I attended a webinar earlier this week on the subject and one of the things they said is that it's helpful to tell your friends about your quit plans. So here it is ..... I am setting my official "quit date" as Monday, February 14th .... *fingers crossed*

Honey - we'll monitor the situation and if it seems too icy we'll stay home. Thanks! And sending you super strength for quitting! That's such a great step you're taking!! Health benefits of quitting start immediately!
In such a good mood today!! I bought some new interview clothes (money from the clothes budget) and feel totally prepared to wow these people next week!

Yesterday was a controlled spend. So we are at 17/20 NS/CS and 16/18 NEO
I'm pretty sure we'll head out to dinner tonight. Tomorrow will be a spend. I'm invited to a Miche Bag party and my mom is going as well. Then she wants to go to Steinmart and see what is on sale. Of course all of this is weather dependent. They are saying tonight 1", then on Sunday another 4-6". While it isn't as bad as last winter, it still isn't all that fun.
DH & I need to plan Spring Break soon. It will be kind of busy and include our first overnight trip without Mini-d. I'm thinking the first weekend of his spring break we'll drive up to St. Joe. I have a groupon for B&B up there. Then later in the week (I think Mini-D's school is closed Th & F) we'll drive over to St. Louis and go to the Magic House (children's museum), they have a Bob the Builder exhibit through the spring and then hit the zoo there.
Honey- Good luck quitting!
Red- Good luck on the intervew.

oops I forgot to add part two to my question: Of the things you buy that are want/luxury (for lack of a better description) are there any that you can look at and maybe skip and add the money to savings, debt, etc.?
I bring up this question purely as a self motivator but I think we could all use a little look in the mirror and look at our spending honestly (again, something I need to do)
We have a list of things that are important to us and we still spend the money on even though the money could be better used elsewhere. We do it as sort of a sanity reason and to continue living life now while digging out and getting ahead. As I have been looking at our spending for last year, I question the fact that we have way too many of these "things" on our list. I can justify each and everyone of them. I would do the same thing when I bought things with a cc-totally justify the spend. I have been giving my self so much credit for only spending cash and not using a cc that I haven't been completely diligent in saying no to some things to get us paid off and ahead quicker. I think it really hit home when someone posted about a person pinching pennies only to take a vacation. (I do that too but never looked at it that way). I will still be signing the kids up for baseball/softball that is a priority for us, but I will sit down with DH and go over our list and try and eliminate a few of these justifiable wants. I think we need to really examine our season tickets. I LOVE them and it guarantees us a date night...and have I said I LOVE them but we both know they are not the wisest use of our money but we get to get out and be us with our friends and no kids and it makes DH feel like he gets to enjoy the fruit of his labor now and not always playing catch-up and did I mention I LOVE them. I know we need to also reconsider our week beach vacation in October with our dear friends. It is as cheap as dirt for a family of our size but even dirt is a pretty penny when it is all said and done. Anyhow, I need to make our list and then DH and I will go over each item and re-evaluate it.

Happy Friday everyone! 11/15 NSD & 11/20 MOAN I didn't bring lunch today to work and was thinking of eating out but I remembered that I had a can of soup in my desk drawer so I popped that open and scrounged around for some change that I've collected from work to buy a bag of chips...so proud of myself! I didn't eat out all week! Today is my three year anniversary with DBF. He's planned something and won't tell me what we're doing but that I have to wear comfy clothing and sneakers. I sure hope he isn't making me run!

Honey; We will be your cheerleaders if you need any help along the path to being a Former Smoker azmom: Most things for me are want rather than need. I would have to say eyebrow waxes and getting my hair colored. That's really about the only thing during the month that I spend on just me. Shanen: We had the governor declare a state of emergency when I was in jr high for the cold temps. We had already used up all of our alloted snow days. So far this year DS has had I think 2 early releases, 3 late starts and 2 full days off. Of course here in MN it has to be a substantial amount of snow and blowing and drifting for them to cancel snow. Today was a spend day- I took the day off from work and DH and I ran a few errands. Picked up some supplies that DS needs to make a homemade musical instrument for music class. Got groceries, we did eat out for lunch and were please to discover that panara now has all the calories listed next to the price so we were still able to eat within our calorie goal range. Only unnecessary spend (other than lunch) was a stop at the fabric store. Looking for fabric to recover some pillows now that we repainted the family room. Discovered that our joann's is closing their store (and moving into their new store a couple of days later). So everything was 75% off. Stayed in control and bought a couple of bags of beads for DS instrument (rain stick). Some tape because seriously tape at 75% off is a great deal. 3/4 of a yard of fabric for $1.35 and that's it. So pretty reasonable. Unnecessary but reasonable.

I just came back inside from my "break" lol, 45 minutes of raking leaves and scooping dog poop.
Seriously considering taking tomorrow "off" and not doing any work. To put this in perspective, I haven't had a day working less than 10 hours since Christmas day. Most of this week I've done 16 hours.
Still sick and trying to keep from coughing during calls while getting enough fluids, eating occasionally and getting work finished. It's exhausting right now.
Grandma is doing better, had her pacemaker battery replaced Wednesday and is home resting.
Grandpa celebrated 44 years sobriety last night and I went with him to AA.

startsmart - *please* take a day and rest to speed recovery and add taking care of your health to your master plan! honey - I'm with you on scared of needles - but the acupuncturist did wonders for my back (and moving on to other issue) - good luck with it! on hosting 2 kids - is part of this year's cost "start" up cost? and BTW - I *know* your quilt is amazing - have faith in yourself -we do! muttley - happy birthday to DS! boo on fed ex but glad it was there when you got home renee - looks like we should start talking about coordinating a meet in Omaha for the drive to Rapid City! Anyone else want to join us? Car costs are on me since I would pay it regardless. Week is finally over and it is bitterly cold here - but nothing like many of you are experiencing. For a FL girl - I'm still not use to it. Travel news - We got super lucky (since I constantly check prices) - our cruise dropped between when we reserved and bought (<24 hours) and we saved $200 - that is MORE than the tip/service charge. PLUS we get one hotel night free on the way down (points from work travel) and the hotel we'll stay at the night before the cruise has a parking package - so we'll get the room, parking for the whole time we're gone and transport to & from the port for LESS than what we would have paid to park at the port. No matter how tough things have ever been - I always have insisted that I live in someplace I felt safe. When things were really bad everything else was given up. As things eased up - the first "want" we reinstated was travel. We choose to do without a lot that others consider 'needs' so we can continue to meet our travel goals.

Scruby Are you sure you want to do that? You will still have about a 7 hours 39 minutes according to map quest to drive. That's without bathroom breaks. Roughly a days drive. It's roughly 500 hundred miles. 500 long and boring interstate miles. All you will see is truckers and after a while even they turn off. Then it's just you and the cows. That time of the year there is flooding to watch out for too.
One time I can home down a main road, two lanes each way that had flood waters covering one of my driving lanes. The water was overflowing from the ditch and leaking out of the river way onto the roads. I stopped completely in the middle of the road deciding if I wanted to cross. I watched the car ahead of me cross, I gripped the wheel and did some white knuckle driving, and praying for about 5 miles.
You can get a flight that will be a lot closer and better for your sanity.

vnot - happy anniversary! hope you guys have a great time!
spruby - that's awesome! i need to look at cruises to see if it's possible for us this year. So much bang for your buck!
Got blue his new phone. Now we have to try not to mix them up since we have the same phone... Looked at microwaves, which we need a new one of, but couldn't pull the trigger. I guess SOME of this NS stuff has sunk in. Will do more research so we know we're getting the best for our money.
And we lasted two weeks without Chinese food. His parents cancelled on us because they were worried about ice and they were going to take us out and we're tired and cranky and there's nothing really eat-ready in the house so... I caved. I'll pay it back from my fun money so it's not on the house fund. I am so weak... and hungry... hope it gets here soon.
Startsmart - REST! I order yoU!

Hmmm - this middle of the country road tripping sounds like much less fun than east & west coast road tripping. 500 miles is not a big deal to me - I've actually driven 2000 miles (r/t) just to see my family for a day (I was insane - I know it). I will certainly keep all this in mind.
Question - what will weather be like usually for driving and will there be places for a restroom break (real restrooms)?
I hate connecting flights and little planes - both required from here to Rapid City - but if that is the best option - then I may just have to suck it up.
Thanks for the input! I've done a lot of east/west coast driving and DC to Chicago - but never the "middle" of the country stuff - so all advice appreciated.

Update: 14 NS / 4CS = 18/15 (Goal 15NS/CS)
All -- Heard from sharing. She sends her regards and plans to be with us sometime next month. She has been suffering the dentist and the freezing weather. Think of her in hibernation. Also an earlier email from Nitza related that she is completely snowed under with work, grad school and wedding plans. I believe that the wedding is fast approaching as well as the end of the semester. I think once everything calms down with her that we will be reading her long comments as usual.
kcgal -- I may contact you off thread before the Black Hills meet up to arrange for a stash of chocolate covered sunflower seeds. I knew I should have purchased more. I lost the web info from them. I don't need them now as I still have quite a bit of candy and goodies from the kids to finish consuming. ;D I think I still have your phone number stored in the cell.
Honey -- Your quilts are beautiful. As to the increased costs -- teenagers are expensive in ways we don't always realize. Extra laundry, electrical power, paper products (sorry Sheila), gas, and don't forget food. Every time I look at my GS I swear he has grown another two inches. At 12->13 he is taller than me and I am sure outweighs me. The kids that I had in class last year all grew up and out over the summer. Some of them are almost unrecognizable. You enjoy the kids and I do believe that being around kids keeps a person young in thoughts and spirit even though at times we believe that they are causing more gray hairs. I think that teaching has kept me up to date a lot -- not that I enjoy their musical taste.
Muttley -- It is so hard to believe that B is one today. It seems that it was only yesterday that you were planning to try to have a child. Give him a hug from all of us. (I do miss the hug smilies!)
Dakota -- Mini-D in pre-school will be harder on you than on him. He is a charmer and will make friends before you are out of sight.

Scruby: The drive is long and fairly boring. If you drive make sure your Ipod is loaded full of music because 1/2 across Nebraska you will find static or country music. I usually get in 2-3 audio stories that are about 8 hours long on the drive there and back. Upside the restrooms on 80 in Nebraska are GREAT!
$squirrel- it is hard to keep the chocolate covered sunflowers out of my mouth they are so good. I'll try to get a hold of some sunflower cookies. I tried to make some but it let a lot to be desired so I'll just buy them.
One snowstorm down next one rolling in. It's biter cold here with about 7 inches of snow.
I seriously had to walk to school and it was 2 miles (not up hill both ways)in the cold, in the snow and in the rain. Closing school of 7 inches day 2 I'm not sure was necessary. I think they are closing because of the very cold temperatures.

Spruby--I don't want to say you CAN'T drive from Omaha, but it is a very different kind of driving. If you take the Interstate it is long stretches of boring and monotony, and sometimes scary to those used to more traffic around. If you are with someone who knows the local or regional points of interest it can be quite interesting. I consider some of the expansiveness to be quite awe inspiring. But still long stretches of the same thing. Yes, you will find restrooms, I won't guarantee the cleanliness in some of the smaller stops. I guess my biggest concern is using an entire day of vacation time to just drive through this part of the country, because you won't have time to stop at the more interesting places and it would probably involve an extra nights lodging because I definitely would not recommend extended night driving. The weather that time of year can be very variable. It is not unusual to have widespread flooding if it has been a wet year, you will have to expect detours. Or it could be one of those freak years with long stretches of 100* plus days that just bake cracks in the earth. You never know until the time comes. You can get flights with only one transfer, and it will not be a crop duster bi-plane, probably a 737 or an Airbus A320. The connection from Denver is only about an hour I think, it has been a while since I flew anywhere. I am sending you a message.

Oh. My. Stars. This is ridiculous. First the flooding, now my house has no water pressure. And it happens at midnight on Friday. Sigh.

BTW I am SO appreciating my mom right now. She is giving me most of the money for our minivacation. So I booked it for her, myself, DS#1 and DD for the first part of March. SO excited to take the kids to the waterpark hotel in Wisconsin Dells. My sister and her family are going also. I will rant more about them later... I think DS#1 will have a good time with my neice as they are only 4 months apart. Now the biggest challenge will be the 4 1/2 hour trip. So it talking with DSIS, the one I DON'T talk money with, they have one credit card they are allowing to go into collections, well it turns out they have another that was going to go AND an electric bill from when they lived in SC. They are paying the CC before it hits their credit but REALLY. She is still going to Wisconsin Dells with us (is in the process of booking it) they spend whatever they want while they are there, she is hosting a crab boil/party on Sunday AND they are flying to FL to see her inlaws and hope to leave my neice there AND go to the Sandles resort (that may be out I don't know I really didn't want to ask.) Now my BIL makes OVER $150K a year and is expecting a $15K bonus in March

azmom- when my kids were little and wanting to do all things sports I found this to be effective. I would figure out what the cost of the summer activities were and try to save up for it in the winter months. I would have to have maybe $15.00 a month instead of a massive bill in the summer that I had I had to figure out how to pay. When I reached the price of the activity cost for the year before I would add $10.00 then put it in a envelope and seal it closed and put it someplace safe until I needed it. Never told my husband I was doing that but after a year or two of this it became the expected way of doing it. He figured it out pretty soon. It was the best felling to pull out that money and know it was covered. My kids had winter activities too but they never seemed to cost as much as the summer activities did.
Honeylioness- I know exactly how you feel about your quilts. I feel the same way about my pictures. For a long time I never offered to show anyone except family my pictures. But this is the one thing I learned. Ultimately I am the only one that has to like the picture I took. As long as you think your quilts are great and I hear they are, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

To all who have the Wii: We got a Wii for Christmas and I have gift card to buy something Wii. We have the basic sports and sports resort. Lots of fun. Any others you find fun? How about the dance one? I just heard there is a zumba one? Haven't had time to check it out yet. Anything that is like exercise I want to hear about. Boxing is sure a work out.
Spends I could cut out: I get my hair dyed and eye brows waxed every other month. Call me vain just don't want to go gray yet. My Weight Watcher could be cut if needed. But I think learning a better healthier life style is a goal I want to chase. I also have a gym membership that in the beginning was a good chunk of change. Now it only costs me $50.00 a year. So I'll keep it until I die.

kcgal - Wii - our favorite game - not a sport - but realllllly fun - is Toy Story Mania - it is all sorts of carnival game (ring toss/shooting/strength test) - you can play against each other, unlock levels, etc. It is fun with a group/party too - just think of all the games you would see at a carnival. It is 3-d too - but I don't wear the glasses - makes me sick.

spruby - regardless of what you decide, I'm up for the road trip if you are. One of the things I love about road trips is the time to just talk, think, and connect with the person/people you're with. I made the drive from Omaha to Bellingham WA about 4 years ago with my college BFF. Sure, it wasn't the most interesting country in the world, but I wouldn't trade that time with her for anything in the world.

I am in NS mode until February when I get paid- then it is CS/NS mostly NS. I do CS for a few shopping items- bought with coupons if at all possible, have plans to go out for the first time in 2 months and will go out to dinner. Warning- Rambling Budget Statement Ahead I am startin to go with major cuts on my budget where I can because I am starting to look for a house for when I get done school. It is generally cheaper to buy than rent where I live and I only e able to stay where I am for another year tops. Once I start doing fulltime transcription, it may void my lease I found out because it is work from home. They can give me until the end of my lease or give me 30 days. I can not move home because my DB and I don't get along- he lives there rent free.
