finnime, are your smoke alarms also combination carbon monoxide alarms? If so, I'd check into whether you might have a carbon monoxide issue in your house. You know it is the silent killer. It's weird that two of the alarms went off at once. Are they hard-wired or only battery-powered? Hard-wired ones can also have a battery backup so they work during power outages.

In some towns firemen will replace smoke detector batteries. Of course you must tell them about ladder Our detectors are hard wired from when we had second story added. When one goes off all do We had an electrician come and he replaced all the detectors which were about 20 yrs Also have one on a cathedral ceiling. I Can’t reach it with the normal 4 step house ladder . Grandson who is 6’4” can reach the fan/light in that ceiling with the small ladder

snapdragon I had definitely not considered bears and raccoons lol. Your location sounds wonderful! finnime I'd call and ask the fire department ... otherwise do you have a handyman? Is part of your ceiling lower than that? Is it advisable to put it on a wall instead? Semester countdown: 1 week left!

My smoke/fire alarms are hard wired with battery back up. Mine are also too high for me to change the batteries.
Carbon monoxide could have set them off and that is a true crisis.
Mine have gone off a few times over the years for carbon monoxide but this past January, I did have a house full of carbon monoxide. Snow/ice was blocking one of the vents on the roof. Firemen had me leave the house and take the cats. We sat in my car while they took care of the carbon monoxide.
You can't safely be in a house with carbon monoxide.

Thank you for your concern. Carbon monoxide did cross my mind as an issue, but the CO detector did not flag anything. And then when the battery completely died in our bedroom we had no further problems from any alarms. Whew.
Yes, I'm pretty sure the fire department will come and replace fire alarm batteries if needed. They do it as community service.

I got so much overdue cleaning done yesterday. So much so that bonus teen was like what crawled in your shorts today. I said dunno but come help me reach stuff off the top shelves. She's tall!
I'm going to start work early this morning and cut out early to see if cleaning bug is still alive. Could use a couple more hours in our basement storage area. Garage needs about 30 mins.
Living room needs 30 mins to clean around dd11s amazing box dort lol.

The new well is still a work in progress. They should be back out on Monday and hopefully they will finish the drilling portion, then the pump crew will come in and do their thing. After that the fence will need to be replaced in the pasture and I will bring in the irrigation guy to check out sprinkler heads etc. While they are being careful you can't have large trucks driving in the pasture and yard and expect that they won't drive over something. I will also probably hire someone to put the fence back into place since DSIL is working extra long hours at the moment.
I haven't gotten any of the things done that I was planning on doing while I have been off work this week. I have rested and slept a lot which I know I needed, lately I have felt both mentally and physically exhausted.

This week was a slog, it felt like I had nothing to do Monday to Wednesday and then today was FULL and I was very motivated. The new job is going well and I really love being in charge 😂
I’m slowly cleaning up after the dog who shredded a bunch of papers and left me the mess. Today I also did the upstairs litter box and a bunch of dishes and clothes.
For once I have no plans this weekend so I intend on staying home, cleaning, organizing and not spending money! My home insurance is due next week so I need to find that paperwork and write the check.

startsmart do you WFH, in the office, or a combination of both? We've had people for meals three times in the past couple of days. I'm glad that's over! Between the movers and the company, the house is looking pretty good. I made up the new guest bed yesterday. The new mattress seems fine. It should be a quiet weekend. And I'm only working 3.5h next week.

Debthaven - it’s entirely WFH but I have board meetings, cohort trainings out of town and lots of meetings in town. But I like the variety, working from home for 14 years taught me that it can be really lonely and now I’m meeting with people all the time.
Also I do Friday morning volunteer shifts at a coffee shop so that’s my unofficial office time!

I decluttered a very large item today, a piano. I had listed it for free on marketplace knowing that selling pianos is very difficult. There are a lot of mixed feelings going on right now. It was my great uncles piano that he played daily. When we took the piano the hope was DD would be able to take piano lessons but that didn't work out. Even though I have had lessons on and off growing up it never took. I probably wouldn't be feeling this way but the person who took it I'm pretty sure is a druggy. I don't know if he thought there would be some value in it and since it was free took it or if he was here to case the house. Anyway it's gone. DD had made it very clear she didn't want it.

Now that the first basement room has been emptied of DS1's Stuff, we are talking about getting a tool bench for DH. Ikea has one with drawers where he could put his tools.
I'd like to get more shelves to move the food pantry items there from the second basement room. I'd also store kitchen items we rarely use. (I want to get rid of them but of course DH disagrees.)
DH has quite a bit of work to do before he can set up a tool bench. But I could do that pantry project this week ... hmmm.

That is definitely a difficult situation.

For the organizational purposes of this thread: We're hosting a Casino Night on July 30. DH and I are not on the same page regarding food. We really need to get that sorted out. For decorations, I'm in the midst of making red drapes. They will work well for this particular evening, plus they will also work for Christmas time. The remaining list for Casino Night is currently: - Make confetti (started)
- Put ribbon on mini buckets (ribbon purchased, nothing more)
- Set up prizes (10 prizes purchased, 5 still needed)
- Put center pieces together (all materials are purchased)
- Count appropriate table clothes and potentially purchase more
- Make drapes (three of six panels are complete
- Name tags for chip buckets
- Make last place prize
- Wrap boxes for plate tiers
- Put the lanterns together
- Make lantern and ribbon strings
- Pay bartender
- Finalize layout with gaming crew
- Glasses layout
- Instructions list written
- Instructions lists printed

debthaven -- Also counting down with you. Also happy that several items are no longer in your basement. startsmart -- Sounds like the new job is a good fit -- some people time plus WFH as well. That way you should be able to get a load of laundry done as you stretch between calls and computer. Knee Deep in Water Chloe -- Good luck on your first day. Party plans are outlined -- you got this. soupandstew -- Stay safe. Looking at the last track I think you will get some effects but not the full effect. I think our rain chances have increased also due to Beryl. Update:*Project 1 from Retreat -- Is finished *Laundry has been started today. *Closet has been revisited -- not much has left. A few items are on their last wears. Will tackle another area soon. *House is basically in order *Got a gift card to give to a neighbor as a thank you for doing a favor for me. Appreciated the help. New Goals and some repeats (July 7 - 14):*Project 2 from Retreat *Project 3 from Retreat *Meeting -- Tuesday PM *Custom design for former student -- About halfway done*Maintain flat areas, keep things organized, and make progress in letting go of items that I don't need. This has gotten better but I need to keep on top of this. *Keep up with laundry and dishes *Continue to eat out of freezer -- hurricane season is upon us. *Call to meet with some service people -- need a backup person for one chore and another person for a second. Til later.

That sounds PERFECT for you startsmart ! So happy it's going well! It's been a LONG day! The new pantry shelves have been purchased, installed and filled! We bought shallower shelves so things don't get lost. We got two sets: one for food and one for household items. Everything fits, even the items we never/rarely use. To be clear, the first basement room is not empty, but DS1 took a HUGE amount. He'll eventually take more, but not any time soon. The 4 (now) empty shelves in the second (storage) room will get filled by DH's Stuff on the floor. My goal is to put everything I need in the first basement room, and to pretend the second room doesn't exist (except for luggage and Christmas stuff).

One more drapes panel to go. Plus, I need to iron tonight. There are currently 12 items in the ironing pile. We'll see how far I get this evening.

Knee Deep in Water Chloe I admire you for hosting so often. I moved the Christmas Stuff to those empty shelves, right under the luggage. DH still has 1.5 more deep shelves for his Stuff. Very happy with these small changes!

soupandstew -- Thinking of you this morning. Hope that the storm does little if any damage to you and yours. I know that you will be relieved once the worst is over and then the cleanup of all the leaves and branches begins.

I know that you will be relieved once the worst is over and then the cleanup of all the leaves and branches begins. Thank you - we are incredibly lucky with tons of small branches down but nothing large, no visible structural damage to the house (1 picket off the fence), water supply is safe, and our generator is running. We'll start playing pick-up-sticks tomorrow for the tree debris. So many have suffered significant damage and, sadly, there have been fatalities from fires and downed trees. We hope to have power restored - along with 1.7 million other folks - by Wednesday or Thursday.

So happy you're safe soupandstew ! DS2 and E are here tonight. They came for dinner and they're staying over. DS2 is thrilled to have DS1's furniture out of his room LOL. DH was sad not to have bought that Ikea workbench yesterday. (He said he'd clear up the basement first, and I held him to it.) Today he said, it would encourage me! I felt badly ... DH asks for very little. So we got it. He's agreed NOT to set it up till AFTER he clears up his Stuff. When we got home, DH spent 2.5h clearing up the basement! There's more to do, but hey! Going to the dentist tomorrow, hopefully only for a check-up/cleaning.

I conquered my shite pile this weekend too! It was on the dining table and now is all filed, trashed or sorted. For the new job I set up 2 binders with tabs from my stash (see, hoarding office supplies occasionally pays off!) and it’s been really helpful. Today I got a few groceries for a party on Saturday and a birthday card for a friend. It was a really relaxing and no spend weekend and now I need a nap. Sadly it’s 8 weeks until my next holiday

I still have a lot of office supplies from when I retired. My boss said not to bring the cheap brief cases and their contents back so I didn't. That was 1995.
The rubber bands are rotten, of course, but some of the supplies are still good.
Some of the stuff in my pile was the new insurance papers and I have confirmed they can be moved to the shred pile.

I've got to organize our inventory of framed or matted pictures before the next show, in two weeks. Yesterday we each brought two pictures to a gallery for a show starting Friday. We have boxes of pictures lining the hallway. Got to get on top of that asap.

I laid low with the holiday and heat/sunshine. I was able to get a few bike rides in though.
I had plans to work outside due to it being cooler this week and I went and tweaked my left side and lower back. So even just moving is rather difficult right now. And of course, since I can't do anything at the moment, I am seeing all different things I want/have to take care of outside.
Earlier today I got busy on the computer paying bills and looking over my accounts that I forgot about my tea steeping so it now has a bitter tinge. Tomorrow and the next few days I will be out there. The weather will be much better for me to get things done. I will just have to load up on muscle spray and not try to pull anything too hard.
Looking forward to the dinner theater happening in 11 days.
