When I couldn't use my old utilitarian phone for Samsung Pay, I could live with it. Same when I got a robot vacuum, didn't really need to use it remotely anyway. But when I got a Ring doorbell which I couldn't view remotely, decided it was the time to update. I got the lowest priced Samsung phone that would accommodate those uses.

My DIL just sends a text and says new iPhones ready to be picked up. I pick it up and say thank you! Works for me. I am hoping someone will include me on a family plan sooner or later. I plan to drop into Mint and cut my recurring costs. My iPhone 11 is the first smartphone I've ever had. My last dumb phone was in supported service through Virgin Mobile for at least 10 years.

DH just bought me a new I-phone 15 Pro Max. The old one was out of memory, could no longer update it.
I asked DH if I should get a 14 Pro Max, and he said no, he wanted me to go with the latest technology. He did not upgrade his at the same time. He declined to give them my old I-phone 11 Pro Max for $350.
I guess he figures he can sell it on his own.
Just ordered a new Bandolier case after I have dropped the new phone walking the dogs a few times. I should have bought on Black Friday, Would have got 30% off. Also ordered a Kate Spade case off E-Bay. I have a Case Mate Case, hoping the Kate Spade is like my old case that is easier to take on and off and switch with the Bandolier (I mostly use it for Dog Walking).
I had issues setting up many of my apps. T-Mobile Tech support told me phone was defective, sent me to Apple Store, the person at the apple store told me to turn off the VPN, which I did and now it is working fine. The question if the VPN could be interfering with the phone working was on my list of Questions I asked T-Mobile. We should have just purchased the Phone at the Apple Store to begin with.

Usually 2-4 years. We get iPhones that are usually a model behind current. They seem to be more and more durable each year. We’ve had the XR’s for 5 years and we are replacing as Christmas gifts to ourselves. Back when they used to have “new every two” it seemed like I’d drop and shatter just after the 2 year mark.
