Many of those have like 25 miles of electric range. They would have to be plugged in every night. I get the concept behind that type of hybrid - but it seems like a pain in the ass for not much reward. Park your car, pop open the EV Fuel Door, unhook the charging cable from the wall and attach it to the car. Takes just a minute or so. Then you turn around in the AM and hang it back on the wall hanger. It is a bigger PIA to go to the gas station imho, but to each their own. for people with garages.....what about apartment dwellers?

What everyone seems not to realize is that the US’s current electrical system cannot support even 30% of the population having electric vehicles plugged into homes…..let alone 80%. Take a look at what has happened in TX with colder than normal weather or CA when temps rise too much for too long. All this results in failure, as the infrastructure to support increased electric usage simply is not there on a basic sense. This does not take into account the lack of support services in large chunks of rural USA. that is why tesla has solar and home energy storage. I am hoping solar on my garage roof will be able to supply the needed electricity fo the car, garage door, and lights. Solar panels are not an option where we live. Too many tall trees. I can’t even grow a decent basil plant, ver6 little direct sun.

Not about houses, just households so I'll try later to see what I can find. This is from the US 2020 census. Households
There are 36.2 million one-person households, which is 28% of all households. In 1960, single-person households represented only 13% of all households.
Family
The number of families with their own children under 18 in the household declined from 2000 to 2020. In 2020, 40% of all families lived with their own children under 18, compared to 44% in 2010 and 48% in 2000.
www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2020/estimates-families-living-arrangements.html#:~:text=More%20than%20half%20%2858%25%29%20of%20adults%20ages%2018,women%20%2853%25%20in%202019%20and%2056%25%20in%202020%29.
From a quick Bing search-
In the United States, 38% of renters live in in apartment buildings (with five or more units). That’s approximately 38.9 million people.

Well, I charged my car from the driveway for a year before we installed the charger in the garage. Some garages have chargers, some people install a charger near their parking spot.

If I lived in an apartment I just wouldn't get a plug in car.

I have a single car carport/driveway - so we have to switch which car is close to the charger. I don’t find plugging it in a pain, but to make sure I get the coveted parking spot once a week is easier than if we had to charge 2 cars every single night.

I'm trying to decide what car to get next. I like Hondas and the size of my (regular) Honda CRV. However, I commute 70-miles round trip for work. Getting a Hybrid CRV won't work for that commute. So, I'd have to get a fully electric compact SUV. Well, those are expensive. I was just reading about the plug-in vehicles, but they still don't go far enough to get me to work without using gas. Frustrating. I suppose the decision lies in spending the money on gas or spending the money on a fully electric vehicle. I spend $200/month on gas just for driving to work.

I'm not sure why companies aren't making more hybrids. That seems like it would be a better stepping stone. Well, they really are compared to even 5 years ago. It seems everything has a hybrid option out there now. It wasn't that long ago that there were only a few models.
A hybrid with an all electric up to 100 miles option would be perfect for me. I could be on electric the vast majority of the time. And on long trips if I see a charger I can use it, otherwise, no big deal. But, those electric/hybrid vehicles are still awfully spendy compared to what I spend on transportation now, so financially I am much better off running my current old and paid for cars into the ground.
See, it's that 100-miles that I need too! But, while in different regions, you and I live rurally. These plug-in cars that only go 25ish miles before switching to gas just don't seem like a viable option.

Most hybrids get only a minimal mileage, maybe 35 miles?? Maybe many of the folks who buy these expensive cars really don’t care about wasting things?? These folks are probably wealthier than many. Hybrid car is a bragging point?? Much like Prada, Gucci etc This really is a moot point though. We do 2 things with our cars. Travel under 20 miles in town, or go 200+ miles. We might make a 200+ mile trip a couple times a month or so. Math wise, if I am putting 800 miles on my car/mo and 400 is local driving, I will have halved my use of gas, but have the flexibility of both vehicles. We are decently well off, and can afford 2 vehicles but cars are not a status symbol for us…..unlike others. They need to do a job for our lifestyle. Same. And we have an F-250. So, DH's theory is buy an EV SUV for me to commute and use on home-bound weekends and use the F-250 (diesel) for road trips. Which, most of our road trips are with our fifth wheel, so we'd have to use the F-250 anyway. In other news, the F-250's name is Bilbo.

Some people like my DH do not like the feel of any of the EVs. But we dont drive a lot and keep our cars for 20 years, so its a moot point right now.

If I lived in an apartment I just wouldn't get a plug in car. I wonder if some of the new luxury complexes in my area are putting any chargers in? I see them at Target, the library, and various other places. The retirement community that is at the top of my short list is in the pre-construction stage. I'm looking at the new Lincoln Corsair plug-in hybrid as possibly my next (and maybe last) car purchase, so it occurred to me to wonder whether any charging stations were planned for the new community. There was an "ask us anything" email option, so I asked. They say they are planning to have charging stations for the residents but had not determined how many or where they would be located. I would think that would be quite a popular amenity for any residential complex, new or old. The retirement community will have underground parking for the residents, so I would be happy to have ample places for residents to plug in their own portable chargers in lieu of or in addition to permanent charging stations. If things go as planned, eventually, pretty much everyone will probably need one a some time or another.

I went to an electric car show for the free hamburger. It was fun. Several cars were already owned. I didn't ask for a test drive but could have. They had electric golf carts, electric Bob Cats, bikes, coasters. The prices and I don't remember the models were $50,000 plus. Also, we are in the near dead zone of Montana.
I chatted/ate with a lovely lady at the car show.

In my apartment, we are allowed to add a connection from our electric which is in the garage anyway.
One or two people have teslas and have their chargers set up. It just needs an approval from the hoa and I believe they have a person they recommend.

After a little over 2 months, I have to say that I love the car! Best ride that we have ever owned. Quickest, yet the most "fuel" efficient. Roomy for it's size, very comfortable. Great audio. I do now understand why so many Tesla owners like their cars!! 🙂👍🏻
