Mailed in IRS and state returns April 13 IRS already cashed the check. As soon as the mail is opened, checks are cashed. What's the problem with that? I once had a tax client who paid for her tax prep with a check that she knew would not clear until the next day. During tax season, the pile of checks was deposited on my way home every night, around 5:45 PM. Since her account was with the same bank, hers was cashed immediately. She was the first call when the phones were turned on 8 AM. How dare we cash her check and she wanted to be reimbursed for the overdraft penalty. Gave her to the boss and no, the firm did not pay the overdraft penalty. Don't give a check unless you are ready for it to be cashed.

Poor DSIL, hope her remaining days are not too hard. My dear SIL passed away very early yesterday morning. Yesterday also happened to be the fifth anniversary of my dear husband's passing. Five years ago I had our tax return done, I just needed to do a quick review and print it out. Then we would sign it and send it in. My sweetie, though, suffered a sudden, unexpected heart attack before dawn on the 17th, the date taxes were due in 2018. I still remember how unsettled I felt for the rest of that day. I ended up printing out an extension and sending that in. Hopefully my sister got a good night's sleep last night and I'll walk her through the few things she needs to do in order to e-file her return today.
Condolences. My mom died of pancreatic cancer. It can be breathtakingly quick. What a gift you are to your family.

Condolences. My mom died of pancreatic cancer. It can be breathtakingly quick. What a gift you are to your family. My husband's brother died of pancreatic cancer back in 2002. He passed away within 2 months of getting sick. They've made such progress that my sister-in-law was diagnosed in the summer of 2021 and lived almost two years. My husband passed away very suddenly 5 years ago at the age of 63. I was overwhelmed by computer equipment, tools, etc throughout the house and garage. My sister and SIL drove from Seattle in May of 2021 to help me sort through and organize everything. My sister stayed for 5 weeks while my SIL was here for one week, then flew back to Seattle so she could do her thing, which included a lot of bike riding. She would regularly put 5,000 miles on her bike in a year. Anyway, the plan was for my SIL to fly back to Minnesota after a few weeks and she and my sister would drive home at the end of the fifth week. It was while my SIL was back in Seattle that she realized she was sick, so my sister ended up leaving her pickup here in Minnesota and she and her wife flew back to Seattle. Once home, my SIL got the cancer diagnosis. Anyway, it ended up that my sister flew back to Minnesota in September and she and I drove her pickup back to Seattle and I spent a couple of very nice weeks visiting them then. But, like I said, my sister was here for five weeks. My SIL ended up being here for the first and last of those weeks. And every single day we worked hard at sorting and organizing. THAT is my sister's area of talent and passion and that was her gift to me. It has made a world of difference in my life. And now I can return that favor. I'm a former tax accountant. I am passionate about investing. So I'm going to spend a week or two or whatever in Seattle in a month or so, helping my sister feel comfortable handling her finances. She sort of knows what's what, but it was my SIL who mostly handled financial things. So I'll make sure my sister can handle bill paying and investing. They do have a financial advisor they've used for years who they've trusted. I will meet with him with my sister so I also know what's going on there. And, going forward, my sister will know that I'll be there to answer any of her financial questions. I've already told her I'll do her taxes next year.

He passed away within 2 months of getting sick. Same with my mother, at around the same time. Seven weeks from diagnosis. If anybody is lucky enough to have it caught early they have a better chance, but....
