Well.....I got great news...although I know some may not agree, but after paying on my student loans for 22 years and continuing to owe more than I borrowed, they were finally forgiven!! I finally got my PSLF for public service as a teacher. This means all the cash I was holding on to from the sale of my house to pay off my students loans when the repayment period starts, gets to stay in savings and become my bridge fund for retirement. I plan to separate from service at 25 years, but not start taking my pension for 5 years. So I will have to pay for medical and living expenses during that time. I could withdrawal from my 403B or Roth but plan to leave it all until later. Time to figure out my savings goals. Wish I knew the cost of medical insurance....the great unknown! Teachermom Awesome news!

Also posted this in the iBond thread...
I have ibonds purchased in 12/21, 6/22, and 8/22. I'm up $3312. Thanks YM!
I have a big bonus coming of which I'll save 30% of the net. I've also pulled back some cash from an old bond that wasn't earning much any more.
I want to buy more ibonds earning 6.89%, right? And then remainder goes into Capitol One CD earning 5% for 11 months. Second guessing myself even though I can do the math, likely because it's so much cash.

The Capital One CD at 5% is earning so much more than the two I have with my credit union. I think I'm going to stick some money there.

Payday update and some of this is ibond interest as those are part of my savings plan. Going thru a messy budgeting patch pulling back old cds and getting ready for more ibonds and capitol one cd.
3/3/23 update Azucena $20,953 of $40,000 goal (52%) thinking my stretch goal will be $50,000; goes along with my goals of limiting lifestyle creep and beefing up college savings.

Goals for 2023
I am working on goals but I know that I want to save for medical insurance in retirement but since I don't know the exact amount I am going to go for $500 a month.....so that would be $6k per year for 5 years or $30k. I have 30 months of paychecks left so I need to save $1k per month. I have sinking funds set up for some other goals and will add those here too. As far as the car goes, I bought a new car in cash when I sold my house, so this is a very long term goal. Car Maintenance, Tires (we run regular and snow tires), and Christmas and ongoing sinking funds and go up and down all the time. New House and Land are for our retirement property and some will come from the sale of his home that's why they are so high. We would like to build a garage/shop at our property here as it will really help with resale since the almost all the homes already have one but us. Again, some will come from him but this is my portion and I will get it back out of the sale of the home.(Also, won't be used until after we are married).
Goals: Medical Savings $500, 3/3/2023 (Bal. $500.00, 3/3/2023, Goal $30,000 by 9/1/2025) New Car $500, 3/3/2023 (Bal. $6639.11, 3/3/2023, Goal $50,000) Car Maintenance $100 (Bal. $1824.55) Tires $100 (Bal. $410.49) Christmas & Gifts $200 (Bal. $806.87) New Home $500, 3/3/2023 (Bal. $14,171.11, 3/3/2023, Goal $200,000) Land $300, 3/3/2023 (Bal. $53,797.37, 3/3/2023, Goal $100,000) Garage & Shop $500, 3/3/2023 (Bal. $14,893.06, 3/3/2023, Goal $25,000)
Keep up all the hard work. Love hearing how everyone is doing and what they are saving for.

Mar 6/23 update
Utilities $800.00 of $800.00 Ongoing $55.81 of $3,000.00 Auto $101.28 of $4,000.00
Now that it's March, DH has started using his grow room again so electrical costs are going up. I'm going to keep putting $200/month aside in savings to cover the bimonthly bill. Since I've maxed out my utilities savings, I'll split any funds left over after the Hydro bill is paid between ongoing and auto.

Debthaven: 9 March 2023: 26,000 euros (Goal: 30,000 by 30 June)I worked a lot in Jan, so I got a good paycheck end of Feb. I didn't work as much in Feb so I won't be able to save as much next month.

Nearing last call for capital one cd 5% for 11 months ends 3/14.
I made my deposit this morning. Scraped together as much liquid cash as I could and made a large deposit. Now will need to watch that I don't get charged banking fees from US bank bc my min slipped below $25k as I wanted to include part of my upcoming bonus to be paid 3/17.

I need to rethink where I'm at and what my future plans are, so these may all change before I get there. - 30k to max 401k with catchup
- 4.85k to max HSA with catchup
- 10k Ibonds
- 10k treasuries
- 5k taxable stock
Total 59.85k for savings in 2023....
Many variables are unclear right now, but I'll try for this and adapt as I go along.
wow - 2 months later and I'm still swimming in my chaotic thoughts.......about everything! Well - on to savings goals..... Vehicle | Goal | Saved so far | Percent of Goal | 401k | 30,000 | 5,375 | 18% | HSA | 4,850 | unsure* | likely about 20%?* | IBonds | 10,000 | 2,500 | 25% | treasuries | 10,000 | 0 | 0% | taxable | 5,000 | 750 | 15% | Total | 59,850 | 8,625 | 15% or more |
So - I still haven't thought about this enough to "fine tune" anything, so will just go with what I guesstimated in January and wanted to solidify where I am at right now as preparation for the close of Q1. Figuring should be about 25% by 3/31/2023. So - I am seemingly a bit behind, but think I am "secretly" on track . My 401k is not set to max as I am waiting to make sure I get the full match on the bonus that comes out in June, then I will set rest of the year contributions to max by EOY. Have not had any RI checks as yet and those will go towards Ibonds/treasuries through the year. If I lose a client (have not heard from one this year so far) I will maybe need to rethink the goals on those. Lets see - this is 5 out of 26 paychecks for 2023....and that is 19%! oooo - so I am very nearly on track OH - because March will have 3 paychecks only one of which is in. * can't look this up without going on my work laptop which I am boycotting for the weekend! Hope everyone is doing well and seeing progress with savings in 2023! sidebar: pretty worried about the SVB bank collapse, and where we are going financially as country/world.....but at least we can put money into savings and investments and hopefully be making our own world more secure?

Apparently I didn't join this thread this year. Probably because it's like an alcoholic joining a wine of the month club.
hmmmm Not to late to join! yeah...I think I need an intervention more than cheering me on to save more. Case in point. Just got today's paycheck.
Year to date combined 401K and HSA contributions - $10679 Year to date net pay - $3186

Not very different from the last update. I'm waiting for credit card payments to be processed before deciding how much more to transfer into various sub-accounts. UpdateName | Start | Goal | Saved | % Saved | Spent |

how are you living?? ?? Lean...very lean. LOL There was also $2142 in child support year to date, so that covers the house payment and food for 3 months. I'm getting sick of it though. About to go in and turn my contributions down at least 10%. I don't know what's worse though. Killing myself for 9 months and then having 3 months with nothing coming out or just being pretty poor all year.

So a little lower in the begining and then finalize to end year at maxing it after small bonus and raise in June. At the level I am at now, I will be "short" of maxing by about 2k or so, depending on bonus, will need increase contributions by 100-135ish per paycheck to max. I don't know if our company gifts the match at end of year if you max before the end, and I don't want to ask, lol!

This time I got lazy and dumped one big transaction into capital one cd. figured the simple step and tracking outweighed the minimal interest difference.

I've done that in the past and find it disorienting! the break is nice! but going back is painful, lol~ It was so nice especially since it included a nice raise that I hadn't seen any of due to upping my contributions. The last 3 months of the year I just had 13% going into the catch-up, but the FORTY SIX percent regular ended. I felt so flush with cash even with Christmas. Book a cruise? Why not!?! Ge a bunch of work done on DS's car. Sure! Now I'm back to poverty...and a monthly cruise bill to boot.

I remember on my first round of maxing 401k, I would get upset when they upped the limits! my whole raise and then some would be eaten up! Then there was a stretch of years where I couldn't even dream to max it and somehow that was psychologically better for me I think! Back to maxing, this will be year 5 on the spree.....although my raise this year will likely cover the increase, it likely won't within the calendar year as the raise happens in June, unlike the job I was at when I previously maxed where raises were in January just like the limit increases.....too early/not enough coffee for me to gauge if that is a wash somehow of if it really impacts my funding the increase.....?? Sidebar: your DS is old enough to drive! Sheesh - where is the time going.....

welp - this might be a spanner in my savings plans.
I got notice from client #1 for RI for 2023 work. They are only planning for 4 projects this year, as opposed to 7 last year. And it is the less involved projects, so looking at a reduced billing of maybe about 10k this year. So will need to either tighten belts, reduce savings goals, and/or hope I actually get a decent raise at the day job this year!! There is skuttlebut at dayjob that we are out of the woods on financial crises and I am looking forward to something more than 2% this year!
But of course! Had been hoping for a good raise AND the same RI income. Now kicking myself I did not raise rates. I was thinking of sending out updated pricing in December but I did not. Now - have a lot less work to count on so kicking myself a bit.

Debthaven: 13 April 2023: 27,000 euros (Goal: 30K by 30 June/10K for windows)
For better or worse, I'm teaching about the same number of hours in Fall semester.

Debthaven: 13 April 2023: 28,000 euros (Goal: 30K by 15 June/10K for windows)I am not going to hit my goal, but it's a question of logistics. I'll need to pay my share earlier than I thought. They started the windows 2 weeks late, but caught up. They're starting the outside work this week, on schedule (assuming the weather holds up). I thought that would start that late too, giving me the time to save 10K. But it won't. I'm hoping to save another 500 in early May when I get my pension. (It arrives around the 10th.)

The third estimate for the windows came in ...35K. It looks like we're going for the one that's 25K. I may get one more estimate before we decide. Debthaven: 6 Jan 2022 23,250 euros (Goal: 30,000)I'm not sure I can reach this goal without taking more hours. I'm not sure I'm willing to do that. I may pick up one or two more individual professors or staff but I don't want more regular classes. ETA: I have somebody coming tomorrow for the LAST last estimate. don't take more hours! You can pay the window people, and get it done? Then just reassess the money situtation when done?

Rukh O'Rorke that post is from January. I took on 2 more individuals on Zoom in March. That's only 30h total for 2023, so not much. I'm doing 15h/week tops this semester, which is fine. Yes we CAN pay for the windows. But the same company is also redoing the outside, and we WILL need a loan for that (12-15K?). I'm keeping it to 15h/week tops next semester too, so through 2023, and hoping to pay off most of that loan. I'm hoping to reduce again in 2024 but we'll see.
