Hoping to go to my mom's this year but it all depends on getting a negative antigen test before Thursday. We'll get some backup food at the grocery store in case we do a meal at home.
I have a hair appointment Friday afternoon, which was already rescheduled twice due to my having Covid, and we have a friendsgiving on Friday; I will be so bummed if I have to skip both, especially the hair appointment!
ETA: Finally got a negative test! Will test again on Tuesday for confirmation. I'm getting bangs! I mean, err, I'm going to see my family on Thanksgiving!

We were planning to go to SIL’s this year, but we’re still recovering from Covid, so we’ll stay home.

I expect to be home alone and sleep. If I wake up for a period of time and am hungry, I might make so Stove Top stuffing. If I get real adventurous, I may also make instant mashed potatoes and gravy. Then go back to bed. Jealous? Honestly, that sounds amazing. I know the grass is always greener. Staying at home and only having "might" requirements sounds fabulous. There's no "have to." No negotiating hurt feelings. No drama. (Although a do-as-I-please holiday with Drama is something I would drop everything for).

The last 2 years it has been my family of 4 plus my parents and my daughter’s friend (also known as ‘my other daughter’). Because it was Covid, we had a late lunch, outside on a giant table. The weather is perfect here for that. My husband has a spit on the grill where he does a roast beef, and then he smokes a turkey breast. I make stuffing, potatoes, morrocan carrots and green beans. And of course rolls and pie. Last year my son deep fried apple burritos on our outside burner and we just had to fight for them as they came out of the pot. These have been the best Thanksgivings of my life.
However, this year all my sister’s kids (and their spouses and their kids) are coming from a few hours away. So, we are going over there. We are bringing my MIL and ‘my other daughter’ - so there will be a lot of people there. We are going to bring the roast beef. I am also going to make a hasselback butternut squash and an apple cake. I am going to try and make all fruit apple roses (no puff pastry) as my niece is gluten free for real medical reasons. My sister is going to make a turkey roulade and everything else will be quite “traditional”.
I am looking forward to seeing the family, but am even more excited for a leftover party on Sunday with my friends. It is a tradition that has been cancelled the last few years - so bringing it back to life will be fun. We are going to eat, drink and then watch “Spirited”. It will be a fun Christmas kick-off for my crew.

We are having a traditional thanksgiving. Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Stuffing, pumpkin Pie, usually MiL does rice, beans, and Chimichangas. DH does not want her to cook (too much work and clean up), so he was going to have that part catered.
Expecting 20. 7 are going to SIL’s Mother’s house first.
We usually have lots of liquor and an entire table of sweets.
I have cleaned my kitchen and vacuumed living room. DH has a carpet cleaner here and will wash carpets in am. I did the dining room floors last weekend. I do have paperwork on the table I need to file.
DH finished puling 220 wire to outside wall-for my car charger today. He just needs to pull it into garage. He had to finish it b/c he had the can lights at the foot of the stairs out so he could fish the wire through the ceiling. Our basement has a drywalled ceiling. We went to MIL’s for about an hour this afternoon. One of DH’s brothers was visiting from Georgia. He heads back home tomorrow. 2 of DH’s brothers were also there, and one SIL. My DD stopped in and said Hi earlier today, but she and her boyfriend went to Chicago for the Blackhawks vs. Penguins game.

Dh is an only child, so we usually do TG with his parents. There will be 6 of us, with my kids. MIL used to go all out. Last year I ordered a Cracker Barrel dinner, and this year she suggested the same. We are getting the larger meal, so that I can ship leftovers home with DS.
It will include 2 turkey breasts, gravy, cornbread dressing, cranberry relish, sweet potato casserole, loaded mashed potatoes, carrots, yeast rolls, and pumpkin & pecan pie. MIL will make green bean casserole. It is heat and serve, but we doctor it up a little. I think it also comes with turkey stock for the dressing.
Today is my only day at work, and DH is off after Wednesday. He will hunt, I am going to try to relax - though there is a lot of stuff I should be doing in the house.

Tday brunch with my inlaws which I will duck out of early to go to my mom's and help prep for a pretty small meal. Just 12-14 of us. Saturday my aunt and uncle invited us to their home for another Thanksgiving meal. It's definitely one we're going to because we feel like we have to, not because we want to. I'm happy to go once, but will put the kibosh on any annual requests. It's a 6 hour round trip drive, and spending the night just makes the whole thing longer. I think they've forgotten what it's like to have to work.

I feel that part about forgotten what it's like to work raeoflyte. I feel that way about my family. Of course my cousin's wife dictated we celebrate on Thanksgiving and when to eat when she no longer works. And their round trip is still a hour shorter than my one way.

Then go back to bed. Jealous? Pretty much like my plans except that I have no intention of trying to re-create a shred of a traditional Thanksgiving feast. I'm on my overnight stop on my way home from visiting family in SC where I ate plenty and had lots of good family time. DS and DDIL had their celebration with her extended family this past weekend. They'll drive 2 hours to be at her mother's on Thanksgiving anyway because her DH died last January and she doesn't want to be alone that day. That gives me some breathing space and I'll be driving up Friday. I have told them NOT to make anything lavish. I haven't weighed myself but it's time to get back to my usual veggies and yogurt diet. I have wonderful memories of large family gatherings- even the Ex's because his family were great people and they really went all out (pasta course before the turkey!) but we've scattered and most of the cast of characters have died. Time to do new things.

Of course my cousin's wife dictated we celebrate on Thanksgiving and when to eat when she no longer works. And their round trip is still a hour shorter than my one way. My grandmother never worked and was the same way. Especially with Christmas Eve it was a PITA to rush home and get out there straight after work, especially once the kids arrived. We moved it to my parents' house and it was still a pain because we had two old people who couldn't drive so my dad would pick up one old person then Bob/DH would pick up the other. We didn't want them to be alone at Christmas but you could say Thank you that your relatives are driving to opposite sides of two states to get your asses. We decided we are not taking them out for Thanksgiving this year. It will be just the 8 of us at my house. Thanksgiving isn't as hard for me because Grandma monopolized that too for the longest time it was only recently we took over. What bums me out is my mom never really got to be the matriarch and host the holiday like her mom used to when she was growing up. So I am doing it in her place.

I hope you can enjoy the day a little drama.
I did manage to move meal time back a bit to give my dad some more time to sleep. He's got a 2 hour drive.
I'm going to be that crazy person trying to shop Wednesday afternoon. I did put the turkey cookie centerpiece kit in one of my bags. I'm sure I'll hear it's a waste blah blah but I don't care anymore. I never have enough time to do the things I'd like to do. So it's last minute or never.

I think I will. The kids are really excited to host at our house this year. Gwen helped me pick out the disposable plates. Abby was already trying to clean the sun room on Monday night she spent two hours organizing her art desk so it looks good. She asked if she can help set the table. I had to stop Gwen from starting on stuff on Sunday. They have Wednesday off so I told her make her pie and stuff then.
Their enthusiasm is catching.
Then I got back my maternal grandmother's tea sandwich tray. My mom apparently gifted it to my paternal grandma and we found it when cleaning out the kitchen on Sunday. I put it together and I am going to use it for jellybeans, pretzels and popcorn. I am going to continue doing Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving for the kids. My mom would do that for the girls every year and it is something Abby asked about. I don't believe Archie has ever had one he was too little last year jellybeans were still a choking hazard.

Having some feelings over Thanksgiving. Last year we drove down and cooked for Dad, and I am so glad we did-his caregivers froze the leftover turkey and said he enjoyed every last bit of it DS was crying over that last night and set me off a bit. This year we’re hosting DH’s parents and sister, plus my coworker. It’s the first time their nuclear family will spend it together in at least ten years-SIL is typically pretty busy at work over the holidays, but now working at a seasonal place that’s shut down, so she can make it. And God forbid the retired people have to travel when it’s obviously our job to take time off work and go visit them /s. FIL isn’t able to travel now, but that’s always rankled me as well that they felt entitled to all of our vacation time. I do feel like my in laws took Dad’s death as a wake up call and reason to move out close to us, and I suppose I’m glad they did? But but but. I miss my Dad. He actually did travel to visit us, while he was able to.

I've been hosting Thanksgiving for the past several years. I guess I've become the matriarch. I don't like it. I'm not adult enough. I'm an adult, but not an adulty adult.

Not sure we're going to beat the timeline on the kid germs before Thurs.

Thanks all. It hit me harder than I was expecting. I do have a turkey, picked up from the farmers market guy in the parking lot off hours and after dark. I feel like I should at least have gotten some pot or something...but no, nothing but giblets.

first major holiday without DD, pretty bummed. been experimenting with recipes all week now..... Dinner will be: mashed potoates and dressing, both with mushroom gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes (first ever garden grown), roasted veggies (so far carrot, asparagus, and brussel sprouts on the list, hoping to add parsnip, but haven't found any!), hopefully a fresh green salad too. Will have something "meaty", didn't find the usual at whole foods yesterday, may end up just with baked tofu - which is fine with me, will see what DS wants if he can find a better alternative, either for table or just for himself. Always think about beerwench and grandpa's salad at thanksgiving time! Anyone keep in touch?

Hugs to you, lurkyloo. A part of your life has been irretrievably moved on. 30 years after dad and 20 years after mom, I'm still coming to terms with this.

hey Rukh! for something meaty, maybe try somw stuffed mushrooms. like, huge ones. I mix chopped sausage into mine, but with everything else that goes into the bowl, sausage would not be missed. I cook the stuffing in a big fry pan, spoon into the mushroom caps and top with sliced cheese. bake at 375 for ~12min? depending on my stuffing contents, I'll also drizzle with balsamic glaze.

The mushrooms really do sound good. I think I'll make some specifically for dsis WHO IS vegetarian, but dh and I would go for that too.

Just dry brined the turkey with a 3:1 mix of salt and baking powder. DS is SO excited. He was even willing to clean! Unfortunately I’m supposed to be working...DH is going to have to take hime out of the house if I want any peace. Really hoping we get released a couple of hours early.
