But didn't that come with its own cost? Would you have been able to negotiate a better price if you'd paid cash or financed elsewhere? I realize interest rates were pretty darn low a few years ago but someone has to pay for the float on zero-percent (or close to it) financing. I've finally decided that the only way to get the best deal is to keep the purchase, the financing and the trade-in or re-sale separate from each other. That way you don't have a dealer giving you zero% financing with one hand and lowballing your trade-in and/or giving you less of a deal off the sticker price with the other. I pretty much detest the whole process but that's one thing that keeps me from swapping out cars every few years. The dealer told me it was the same price cash or loan, because I asked if I could get a discount for a paying all cash. Offering to pay cash for a car won’t get you a better deal. Either the dealer gets a stack of cash from you or from whatever lender you use. Cash or finance, the only difference to the dealer is that the dealer gets a commission on the loan if you finance. If you pay cash, no commission.

I'm looking at buying a new car in the fall. I have to order it soon as there is zero on the lots. I want a Honda Pilot. I'm also looking at $45k easy, and that's not the top of the line model. I plan on paying about $30k down and finance the rest. A 4 year loan with be about a $350/mo payment. I'm assuming Honda is no longer doing the .9% financing. If interest rates are around 6% now, I may just pay cash. I looked up my closest Honda dealership's finance specials, and hahahaha, 0.9% has left the building. Boo. I have a 2013 Fit with 47,000 miles. Husband has a 2018 Fit with around 30,000 miles. Both bought new with a couple grand put down, both with the 0.9% financing. My payment was $235/month (paid off in October 2018) and husband's payment is $285/month (will be paid off in April 2023). The plan has always been to have at least two years of no car payments and throw that money into savings; I might just have to hold onto my car beyond 2025. Good thing I still like it. All the fingers crossed and wood knocked nothing happens to either of our vehicles to make that happen! Your husband and I have, basically, the same car since the HRV was made off the Fit's frame. My 2018 is coming up on 55,000 miles, having had 8 miles on it when I bought it new in May 2018. But I'm a road-trip-junkie. Just this weekend, I went to MI. Next month, I'm headed to AR. Sept will be another trip to PA. I'm so glad I moved to (nearly) the middle of the country...makes road trips a little shorter. The first six weeks I had the car, I drove from DE down to FL, over to AL, and then back up again. That was before I moved to the Midwest. Unfortunately, it's really not a comfy car for roadtrips but...too little, too late at this point. Maybe my "senior citizen" car will be more comfy.

I pretty much detest the whole process but that's one thing that keeps me from swapping out cars every few years. I must suck at negotiating, because I've always been able to come to a price that makes me happy, even when going with Honda financing. If I don't feel taken advantage of then I'm not being taken advantage, is how I see it. I'm also a purchaser of sub $20,000 cars, no one is making much money off of me. I don't care about an extra $500 discount to get my own 3% financing elsewhere. I have yet to have a vehicle to trade in; we've only ever junked the old cars. I do live in an area with a lot of car dealerships, so if the place 3 miles down the road won't work with me, then the ones 6/12/20 miles away will get my business. to all of this. we have a pair of "Automile" stretches in eastern MA, and competition is solid. when I bought my Mazda on Cape Cod, I was annoyed it was $23k. it was loaded, but I was still annoyed. it was the previous model year (IDGAF) but literally the only vehicle on the lot that had my pair of must-haves - manual transmission, and leather seats (I had a puppy when I took delivery). I hear all of you not buying new cars, but it's different with a manual. I don't want someone's burned-in clutch. so, with the dwindling availability of manual transmissions in general, I may be joining y'all with my next purchase. we shall see.

If they are operating under the impression that I will be financing the car through the dealership or manufacturer's program, I'm sure it is entirely because they misunderstood or misinterpreted something I might (or might not) have said. Total misunderstanding.

I totally suck at negotiating. When I bought the car a year ago, the lots was very empty for both new and used cars. The car I bought was the model I wanted after researching and it was the only one they had in stock.
I had already researched KBB to determine trade in value. They gave me $1K more then I expected, so I was happy.
The guy that did the paperwork pulled out the loan documents. I had already told the salesman I was paying cash. The paperwork guy said nobody pays cash. Well, I was and, yes, it was the first time in my life.
This car has more miles on it that I have put on cars in a year because of 3 trips to Toronto.
At my age, I do expect this to be my last car. There will come a time when I will think I can't make the trip to Toronto by myself and my sister is never coming with me.
Since I don't know when I will feel comfortable flying again, if ever, I don't know if that is an option for me. At the moment, flight problems are even worse than in the US. Much worse.

When I bought my CR-V 4 years ago, I was talking with 1 dealership by work and there was also a dealership by my house. The dealership by work didn't have the color I wanted while the dealership by my house did. I requested the "Best Offer" online through the dealership's website and they gave me a better deal than the dealership by my work. There was no trade in either. With a loan, it was better for me through my credit union. With the van I recently bought, all the dealerships in our area were having a market adjustment in addition to the MSRP. Through cars.com, I found a dealership that didn't have that market adjustment so went with them. Had to wait 7 months for the van to come in stock, but it's a done deal. With the trade in, we had used a CarMax appraisal as a baseline and they matched it enough for DH and I to be happy. Even though my CRV had 6K more miles on it than when initially appraised, the dealership didn't change it from 7 months beforehand. In the end, we were happy (once all was said and done - we got frustrated with the production timeline getting changed each month...). With a loan, it was better through Honda Financial. If it was in my hands when the deposit was put down, it would have been 1.9% (as 4 year loan). In the end, it's 2.9% for 4 years. With the latest Honda financing, that same loan would be 3.9% for the vans... swamp - In my ZIP code, the Honda Passports and Honda Pilots (assuming you can get one delivered before 9/6/22) has 1.9% for 3-4 years, 2.9% for 5 years, and 3.9% for 6 years through Honda Financial. I'm not sure in your ZIP code.

We were thinking of replacing my H.'s 2015 Nissan Pathfinder bought new. I don't recall the blend of cash and finance. The car is in fine shape so we will keep it a while. I drive a 2012 Honda CRZ hybrid. I drive it about 600 miles a year. I plan on it lasting many more years. It got 38 mpg on a highway trip we took. H. doesn't like the car because he has a hard time getting in and out of it.
So, no, we won't be buying a new car anytime soon.

Well I am buying a new car since I had a semi backed into my stopped car on an exit ramp Friday in TN. I was able to call around/look on the internet once we made it to FL on Monday and should have a car waiting for me on Monday. While there really wasn´t any on the lots when I called, 1 dealership had one of the model I was looking for in transport arriving Th/Fr/ Not much room for negotiation on price, but I put down the down payment to hold it, we leave FL on Saturday anyways.

The only car we borrowed to buy was our first one, a used 1975 Pontiac Ventura, in 1976, the year we got married. After that, we saved up the money so we could write a check for each vehicle. Our first non-used car was a Camry in 1992. My husband retired in 2016 and, to celebrate, we bought a top of the line Hyundai Santa Fe Sport in Mar 2017 for him. With all the bells and whistles, it cost about $37K before tax, license, etc. Most of the money for it came from a long ago Employee Stock Purchase Plan which had grown over the years. If I remember right, when we bought DH's Santa Fe, there was a rebate if you agreed to finance the car. But, as the sales person told us, you could pay off the loan immediately. So that's what we did. My sweetie passed away in Apr 2018. I had a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe, so I sold that at a very good price to a niece, and I drive the newer Santa Fe which I love. With the pandemic, I haven't had many long trips so it only has 21K miles in the 5 years I've owned it.

I found this interesting (and horrifying). www.early-retirement.org/forums/f27/the-future-of-car-ownership-monthly-subscriptions-for-basic-features-114638.htmlBMW is now equipping cars for heated seats in some non-US markets but you have to "subscribe" for them to activate the feature or pay $418 up front for "unlimited" access. GM and Buick are now building the cost of a 3-year subscription to OnStar into the MSRP- I guess you have to pay after that. Those are deal-breakers for me. I'm VERY conservative about ongoing subscriptions because they add up. BF bought a used Kia with a free 3-month trial subscription to Sirius included. He's still got it, of course, on a paying basis. I got bombarded with e-mails after I bought my Honda Civic urging me to sign up for the 3-month free trial. I did some checking and mine isn't even equipped for Sirius so I'd have to pay something to get that done. No way.

My Forester is 15 years old and is still in excellent mechanical and physical shape. While the mess is going on with new cars, I have no plans to get rid of it now, but I am considering what to get next. At this point, I just don’t know.
The drive to get onto I5, I pass a row of dealerships and check out the car lots. Audi/Porsche/VW just got a new shipment, as did Kia. Honda’s lot is bare, so is Subaru. Toyota/Mercedes got a shipment as well.
At this point, I’d like some sort of little SUV hybrid, I think. I could run around town on electricity but use gas on road trips. This is really the logical way for us to go, I think. I’m not sure who has these vehicles. I think Audi has one. Not sure of the price tag and I’m afraid to look!

Pretty much everyone these days has a hybrid SUV, if you mean a plug-in hybrid, the list is shorter, but there are still a lot.

Mitch, you might want to look at the Hyundai Tucson PHEV. Hyundai still is eligible for the federal rebates.
I just saw a review of the Honda CRV 2023 redesign. It supposedly compares very favorably to the Toyota RAV4. I did not watch the review of the lower level trims, watched the review of the HYBRID sport trim and he said interior trim and amenities were better than RAV4 Hybrid. At this point in my life, I would totally pay to have the looks on the high end trim. It looks like a Mini Honda Pilot. No pricing yet for the Sport trim.
I saw on Reddit, some said the Kia Sportage was nicer. I am going to compare models once the dealerships have the stuff in stock. It has been impossible to comparison shop for the last 2 years.
If you want a Subaru EV, you can check out the Solterra or the Crosstrek is sold as PHEV, but I saw in my google seach the Subaru might be bringing out a Forester as a PHEV with technology borrowed from the Toyota RAV4 Prime it said next model year - Idk if they are talking about 2023 or 2024.

I looked at the Crosstrek, but don’t like the cargo space available. If the Forester comes out with the borrowed RAV4 technology, that might be an option. The only thing I do not like about my Forester is the road noise, if Subaru has not addressed this, I might b3 looking elsewhere. I still like the look of the Audi.
Doubt I’ll be looking for a car before 2024 though, unless something happens to my car. I do need to do more research into this, obviously.

I like the idea of an electric option but not all-electric. On road trips a typical pit stop is 15 minutes or so- fill up, use the bathrooms, maybe get snacks. I wouldn't want to wait around to recharge a battery. An all- electric would be a "fun car" for me and I'd need to keep or rent another that used gasoline. Not very green. Hopefully I won't have to make that decision for a long time- current car is a 2020.

I do marketing surveys for Hilton points and AA miles (and because I like to see what businesses, etc. are thinking) and there's a LOT of interest around attitudes towards electric, hybrid and self-driving vehicles. Many of the questions revolve around what keeps me from considering them or what might entice me to buy one.
Then there are the usual statements where they want to know how much I agree/disagree: "My car is an extension of my personality." "My car is a symbol of my success." Nope- my car gets me from Point A to Point B. I'm not going to spend an extra $20K to buy more car than I need to impress strangers and attract carjackers.

I was worried about not having a third row with kids and friends so opted for the Highlander Hybrid, but I still think about that Tucson and would consider it in the future!

I just mailed the check to buy my leased car today! It's a Honda Civic, with 9k miles on it. Buy out was a little over $13k. I felt I had to buy it; new leases are crazy expensive, and even worse to buy a car. I like getting a new car every 3 years, as I drive alone most times. I just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a car. So soon after they cash my check, I'll be the proud owner of a used car!

I'm guessing that it's the "least objectionable" color so if they have a limited number of vehicles they can produce they make them in grey. I'd never buy a black car because it would get too hot in the summer; many people would avoid fire-engine red (my current car color, which I love) or sunny yellow. I've never seen a shade of green I liked, either.

Car colors are all so boring these days. Black, white and various shades of silver and gray are about 90% of the colors on the lot.

I drove my husband's 2013 Santa Fe Sport for about a year. It was a pleasure to drive, but a little larger car than I prefer. Supposedly they made the Tucson a little roomier that previous. We looked at the Tucson when DH bought the Santa Fe. I nixed it b/c I thought DH would be unhappy driving the smaller car. ETA: regarding Colors: I am seeing some new cars in the Olive Green Shade my parent's drove in the 70's , and also a new gray color that has some blue undertones-I don't care for the color. RAV4 Prime (Blueprint) and CRV have a really nice blue color though.

I have my name in for an EV Chevy truck, but if it's $70k like I'm hearing that won't happen.
I saw a good looking cherry red pickup the other day a 2021 with 27k miles on it. It was about $44k, with my car as a trade in might not be bad. They said a guy traded it in because of the gas mileage. Likely not any worse then hubs.
We didn't get to go fishing, has been drizzling out all day and is very gray. The cats won 't even come out of the basement and go out, they are happy down there.
I just gave grandson his phone back about 1 for him to play with. I watched War of the Worlds, one from 2021 and it was pretty good. Grandson, didn't like it.
I would go down and sew but don't want to leave him up here by himself.
I sure hope we can get a pool in for next summer. That will give him something to do.

As more than a few of you have heard, I truly hate my Subaru but I'm stuck with it at the moment because I'm not bidding over sticker to get some of the junk on the lots. Maybe this fall or next year I will look around for a new SUV, all-wheel drive, not too small, not too big, must have good high water clearance. And I will definitely separate selling my Subaru from purchasing whatever I find. This next vehicle will probably be my last so I want it to be something I really enjoy. And I may rethink the all-wheel drive although I feel a lot more comfortable on the roads with it
