I think skeeter may have been looking for an apology earlier today, but I'll only apologize for not sharing a link that explained my comment that clearly sailed over his head. the Darwin Awards aren't new by any stretch, and there's nothing redeeming about dying* by some method that was avoidable by the application of survival instinct or common fucking sense. I'm disappointed that skeeter is sheltered enough to have never heard of this internet phenomenon prior to my mentioning it today. 🤷♀️ *I've read that this woman may still be alive. this story warrants a Darwin Awards Honorable Mention, if that's the case. darwinawards.com/There is no reason to get snippy and condescending, especially since I was not referring to you in my original post.
For the record though, I was NOT looking for an apology from anyone. I was merely stating my personal opinion, which I think I'm entitled to do here, and your Darwin Awards remark did not go over my head. I was well aware of what you meant and would have said so if you had asked me instead of accusing me of living a sheltered life.
I don't know if this lady is alive or dead now as there are too many articles that contradict each other. I hope she is alive, recovers from her injuries and has learned her lesson from this experience.
p.s. I am a she, not a he. Something else I would have told you had you ever asked me.

One of my FB friends just posted the funniest series of pictures. She’s on Bourbon Street in NO with her husband and they saw a policeman on a horse. She wanted to take a picture near the horse, without getting too close and/or upsetting the horse. Her captions are hilarious, like “the horse was doing too much moving” and “take the picture NOW”.
Maybe it was so funny to me because I felt her captions and the pictures. Ain’t nobody got time to be playing with no big ass animals, period.😂

Speaking of the smokies - DH and I were driving around an area called Cades Cove one morning and seeing a lot of deer, turkeys, a groundhog, etc. I was complaining that we hadn’t seen a bear yet. Then we drove around a curve and there was suddenly a large black animal on the right - I screamed ‘bear!!’ And almost immediately I realized no, it was an angus cow in a ditch next to the road, with just his head and shoulders visible.
A cow.
DH still mocks me about that, because I minored in biology and couldn’t tell the difference between a bear and a cow.
I’ll never live that down.

In Gaitlinburg TN, in the Smokies, I was at a convention where there was an alcohol fueled meet and greet one evening. I noticed people going out the side door into the parking lot - they were going out to watch a mama black bear and her cubs dumpster diving. Drunken idiots were within maybe ten feet of the dumpster, ogling. Never get near a bear, but especially never a mama bear with cubs. Not too long ago a woman was killed on one of the park hiking trails by a black bear. When we visited the Smoky mountains, we rented a place up in the mountains. We were warned upon arrival to not leave food in our vehicles because the bears have learned how to open car doors. Say what now?! Sure enough, one of our neighbors had a bear get in their minivan and scatter their dirty laundry everywhere. I joked to Mister that their clothes must have been musty, smelling like onions. I only had to be warned once about the bears. I saw a couple of them wandering around on the grounds. And they had the nerve to have a playground for children. Under no circumstances were we going to that playground lol. I did NOT go to the mountains to have to try to fight a bear. I did enjoy seeing them…. From the safety of our second floor balcony. No need to see them any closer than that. My head was on swivel every time we were going to the car and getting out of the car. I also saw some type of big cat. It was dusk, and I only got a glimpse of it before it disappeared into the woods. It definitely wasn’t a bear or a dog. Didn’t wanna see that up close either. Either while we were there or right after we left, someone that was camping was killed by a bear. No thanks, I’m good on wandering around the woods lol. If I stay out of the wild animals’ living rooms, and they stay out of mine, we’ll all get along just fine. I went out a couple years ago to check the kids didn't leave food in the car. Proceeded to forget to lock the door. Turns out bears in Estes know how to Jimmy car doors to see if it's locked. We got lucky he was able to let himself out. We couldn't figure out where all the diet came from on the seats then we saw thevpaw print.🤯 It's a funny story now but could have been an insurance nightmare. We watched a mamma and three cubs bounce around in a guy's truck bed across the river. He likely had fishing gear in there. Nobody is perfect but there is not perfect and stupid. I'd the bear had still been in the car we would have let him have it.

Dh and I had several close encounters with moose when we backpacked. Have to give them room without getting off the trail.
Ds pulled dd up a trail 2 years ago when a moose was running up the path to our campground. Dh wasn't even 10 feet away but on the other side of the tent. Very scary and absolutely no warning.
I had a boss who told me about trying to scare a bear away from his chicken coop once. When the bear turned around he saw her cubs and she charged him. He was sure he was going to die as he ran. Thankfully she just wanted to scare him off. He was very honest about what a dumb move it was on his part and how he couldn't understand why he did it in the first place. He certainly knew better. 1 lapse in judgment nearly killed him. I try to remember that for myself.

I have not seen it nor care to watch it but there is a video out on news sites of an adult bear killing a newborn moose calf. I get it that that is nature but all nature does not need to be seen.
Nature is not cruel; just indifferent.

Narure is not cruel; just indifferent. There's a plaque right about tree line where we crossed the continental divide that basically says the mountains don't care about you, so you better take care of yourself. I have another coworker who chose to go camping in a flood prone area, during massive flooding. His thoughts were that weather impacted people a hundred years ago - we can't let it stop us now. And I just... couldn't respond. He kept saying they knew how to swim, how bad could it be. I'm like wtf dude?!? Flash floods aren't about swimming. I have a lot of sympathy for accidents. Less for willful ignorance.

Less for willful ignorance. This reminds me of a video I saw on YouTube of a family on vacation in I think, Hawaii, standing around this ravine type thing as a flash flood comes barreling in. They were watching, with their kids, as the water got higher and higher, and all I could think was GET OUT OF THERE. No sense of just how quickly that type of situation can go wrong. I get that not everyone grows up in and around nature, but its shocking to me how little common sense there seems to be in some situations.

Emergency services won't come out until AFTER the hurricane is over. Also, people who think they can swim in a storm surge. I just can't...

Interesting video within the linked article. Watch: Yellowstone wolves, bears not welcome at 'bison funeral'
When a bison dies in Yellowstone National Park, it’s not long before the carcass attracts top predators such as wolves and grizzly bears, and much smaller scavengers. But quite often an apparent mourning process plays out, during which all other critters wisely keep their distance. The accompanying footage, captured last weekend by Julie Argyle Wildlife Photography, shows several wolves and two grizzly bears roaming a bison carcass perimeter closely guarded by bison. "When a bison dies in Yellowstone, most of the time the herd that’s in the area will come to pay their respects and surround the dead bison and protect it for hours. This was definitely the case the other day. Watch: Yellowstone wolves, bears not welcome at 'bison funeral'
