I saw on the news Biden at the Asian conference talk about China and Taiwan. He was asked about our response if China moved on Taiwan. He said we would support Taiwan. My question is what could we do if China did take Taiwan? I think China could take Taiwan in 1 week. Sanctions would be useless with all the consumer goods made in China. I think it would cause a economic depression and stock market drop the likes we haven't seen in a long while. Major stores like Walmart who buy almost everything from China would probably go bankrupt. Empty shelves all over. I remember pictures and films of the old Iron curtain stores in the 50's empty and nothing to buy. How much money would it take. Would that happen here?

It would take more than 1 week to prepare an invasion.

Taiwan is 1% of Global GDP. it would be about the equivalent of asking the question: "what would happen to the US if New Mexico went on strike"? certainly not a depression. i think you are overestimating the importance of Taiwan by a considerable amount. it IS the 21st largest economy on Earth, placing it between Argentina and Switzerland. considerable economic value, but not important enough to cause a global recession.

I am hopeful that China has seen how effectively the rest of the world has come together against Russia when it invaded Ukraine. Hopefully they will recognize how it would impact their economy if they get the kind of sanctions against them that Russia has.
Of course, I hoped that Russia wouldn’t invade Ukraine, too.
Always hopeful. Frequently disappointed.

why would they do that? I don't normally agree with what rip posts on here but I think I understand this post in that he was wondering/guessing what exactly the US's support of Taiwan against China would look like. I'm not sure what Biden meant when he said the US will support Taiwan but it probably is far fetched to assume that would mean sanctions against China or any other direct action. I could see "lobbying" for Taiwan happening to ease the current tensions. Who knows?

Who knows? it would look like the last 100 years. that is what Biden meant. nothing new. look, i get what he is saying. but do you realize how tied into the US economy China is at this point? it would throw THEM into a mega-depression to even CONSIDER boycotting the US. and vice versa. have you forgotten the Six Assurances? i had: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Assurances#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Reagan%20administration%20agreed,reaffirmed%20by%20successive%20U.S.%20administrations.

the Six Assurances were reiterated by Obama and became part of the 2016 GOP platform:
The Republican Party Platform of the 2016 Republican National Convention mentions the Six Assurances, stating, "We salute the people of Taiwan, with whom we share the values of democracy, human rights, a free market economy, and the rule of law. Our relations will continue to be based upon the provisions of the Taiwan Relations Act, and we affirm the Six Assurances given to Taiwan in 1982 by President Reagan.
the six assurances go way further than six words by Biden. this is just more nonsense from the right. THEIR STANCE ON TAIWAN IS WAY HARDER THAN BIDEN'S.

Oh, I agree that there is no way the US will sanction China and I agree that the US support for Taiwan will be as it always has been. I had not heard of the Six Assurances, thanks for the link.
