Thoughts and prayers for the families while they bury their loved ones and then It's time to talk. Real talk about how to end these mass shootings. And while this mass shooting is a current event it is also very political too. Enough is enough. Investigators believe the shooting was livestreamed, and are investigating if the attack in a majority Black neighborhood was racially motivated, according to AP.
At least 10 people have been killed in a mass shooting at a Tops supermarket in Buffalo, New York on Saturday, according to law enforcement officials who spoke to the Associated Press. At a news conference, Erie County Sheriff John Garcia called the shooting "pure evil" during the news conference. "It was straight-up, racially motivated hate crime from somebody outside of our community," he said. The US Attorney's Office announced that the FBI was investigating the shooting, which occurred around 2:30 p.m., as a hate crime and racially motivated violent extremism. The shooting took place at Tops Friendly Market on Jefferson Avenue, in the neighborhood of Masten Park, a predominately Black neighborhood. Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia described the shooter as an 18-year-old white man, and told reporters that he was wearing tactical gear and using a camera to livestream the attack. Gramaglia said the shooter started opening fire in the parking lot before making his way inside the store, where he continued shooting people until police officers were able to talk him into dropping his weapon. The identity of the shooter was not immediately released. Mark Poloncranz, who is the Erie County executive and was on the ground with fellow local officials at the supermarket shooting aftermath, tweeted that it was a "horrible day in the history our community." "Like too many communities in our nation, we've been impacted by the horror or a mass shooting," he added. "My thoughts are about the deceased and with their families at this terrible time." Videos posted to social media from different angles appear to show two bodies in the parking lot outside the supermarket surrounded by first responders. In one video posted online, a white man in army fatigues can be seen being taken into custody by police. In another, an injured person is being wheeled on a gurney. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul tweeted that she had offered assistance to local officials and that she was “closely monitoring the shooting." The American Public Health Association says gun violence in the US is a public health crisis. It is a leading cause of premature death in the country, responsible for more than 38,000 deaths annually. As of May 14, at least 15,825 people have died from gun violence this year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive. Investigators believe the shooting was livestreamed, and are investigating if the attack in a majority Black neighborhood was racially motivated, according to AP.

If first graders and their teacher being mowed down isn't going to force the discussion and actual change, then this sure as heck isn't

So many questions!
They are saying he drove hours to that spot. Why? Why would someone not from the area target that store, that neighborhood, that part of the city?
We were trying to figure out where hours away would be, that he chose Bflo.

This is sad. Prayers for all including the retired police officer security guard who died and was unable to stop the shooter.

All we will hear from Republicans is thoughts and prayers. Not one word about what we can do to prevent it. No talk about Ned gun laws, god forbid. Just another day in America.
I agree with a previous poster. If 20 dead elementary school kids doesn’t cause us to do something, I am not sure what is

this is a good example of how NOT liberal the media is. rather than reporting on this as if it were an epidemic (it is), they will report on it as an isolated incident.

They said not long ago, he wanted to kill black people and he knew they were in Buffalo, that is all I heard about why he went there.
These people are crazy, more trumpers eating the party line. Hate seems to be all they know. Just go out and shoot people, relax gun ownership even more, let more people have guns. Until the repubs are sick of it, nothing will be done.
Just sickening.

This is personal for the local politicians. Mayor Byron Brown lives in a nearby neighborhood (where DH and I went to college), has said he's shopped at that Tops, and worked to *get* a supermarket in the neighborhood (because - food desert). State Senator Tim Kennedy's staff member is the mother of one of the surviving gunshot victims. She said he was just doing his job, so sounds like he was an employee.
And now the news is talking about a hate-filled manifesto, 180 pages, with diagrams of the layout of this store. Chose the store for high proportion of black people. Anti-Semitic and anti-black language, and stuff about the Great Replacement Theory.
This kid is only 18. How does he get so deep in this conspiracy stuff, so young? Someone knew - he had guns, tactical gear, armor. He'd obviously scoped out the store 3-4 hours from his home, in the past.

The stupid Great Replacement theory.
Embraced by all racist losers everywhere who can’t hold down a job.
Reminds me of an interview I saw on our local TV years ago where a dirty, long haired, shirtless white guy with only a few teeth (young guy, too, and obviously with some kind of drug issue) ranted to a local news reporter about how the Mexicans were taking away all the good jobs and that’s why he was unemployed.
Sure. Couldn’t be your crazy ass self holding you back.

Then this from trump. What a self-centered ass. What is the connection? And this from President Biden: President Joe Biden paid tribute to those who died and to everyone ‘suffering the physical and emotional wounds of this horrific shooting.’ He said: ‘We still need to learn more about the motivation for today’s shooting as law enforcement does its work, but we don’t need anything else to state a clear moral truth: A racially-motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation.‘ ‘Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America. ‘Hate must have no safe harbour. www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/first-picture-of-white-supremacist-gunman-who-massacred-10-people/ar-AAXhW99?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=e5ccf169d7444f74b93b1cd33f009b4f

Then this from trump. What a self-centered ass. What is the connection? Which 18 months does he think he's referencing? I like the numbers are lower than I expected, but all the years from 2016 to 2019 have US military deaths. thehill.com/policy/defense/476461-us-combat-deaths-in-afghanistan-highest-in-years/Seventeen service members died in Afghanistan in 2019, the highest number since 2015, according to a year-end tally compiled by the Department of Defense and reported by Army Times.
Fourteen of the fallen service members were from the Army, while three were Marines.
The soldiers killed included eight Green Berets, an Army Ranger and three paratroopers.
Last year’s list of fatalities caused by hostile action surpassed the death tolls of 2018, when 13 service members died, and 2017, when 11 died.
In 2016 and 2015, the number of military fatalities resulting from hostile action was nine and 10, respectively.

Trump had to be concerned that with the killings in Buffalo that there would be zero reporting of his speech. He knows that a good lie by him will guarantee a headline.

Is body armor the next thing we have to wear along with strapping on a visible firearm when we leave our homes to go shopping? The good guy with a gun (retired store security employee) died from gun fire after trading shots with the mass murderer. The security guard was not wearing armor.

If 20 dead elementary school kids doesn’t cause us to do something, I am not sure what is I assume they are all busy upping the security around their homes (or making plans to move to a more secure place - like a gated community with actual guards at the gates - and making sure their families have security when they are away from home. At some point someone is going to target a politician or a judge (and their family) because they disagree with or see the politician/judge as "un American". I'm guessing some laws will change when that targeting is successful.
