The weird thing I'm having trouble getting is cat food. My one cat has decided after getting her teeth pulled that she really likes wet food (never would eat it before) while the other one still won't, which is perfect since he needs to lose a lot of weight... Anyhow, canned cat food shelves at the farm supply and Hyvee are really bare. I went to Chewy to order a case of the stuff she seems really partial to, and it was marked as "temporarily out of stock". Might have to buy a crap ton if I find it somewhere.
I get all my canned cat food from Chewy. And when I say I say I buy a lot I'm not exaggerating. Chewy restocks pretty quickly. Give them a couple of days and try again.

I've pretty much switched 100% to chewy even though I have access to a dozen Big Box pet stores within a 10 mile radius of my house. The stores carry what I want but I can only buy 5 cans or 6 cans. I've stopped in the stores but the shelves have the 5 or 6 cans I would have purchased online (and picked up in the store.). At Chewy if you take the option to "notify you when it's back in stock" - you'll get an email. I've had good luck with that. Usually a day or two later I can get an order in as the product has come back in stock. It's weird. I wonder if there's some incentive for the manufacturers to sell to Chewy rather than the stores. Maybe cheaper for them to ship mass quantities to one warehouse and let Chewy deal with further distribution? I just hate to see more shipping boxes at curbs. Yeah, you can recycle but it's even better to "reduce". The only other source for Science Diet food is our vet and they are only allowed to place one order per month due to their relatively small orders. That is why we switched to Chewy at the recommendation of the vet and with their RX. Overall, Chewy has been awesome but the email notification when the RX wet food was back in stock was a total fail. We've made the decision to over purchase rather than face the issues switching foods may cause. If the old guy passes before the food is gone, we will donate to a local rescue.

Going back to the original question, I think I'll see more food on the shelves at the grocery because so many will not be able to afford the higher prices, and that's incredibly sad. I already keep 2 of everything as backstock so I don't see much changing for me.

With Chewy, have an extra week or two of your pet's favorite food(s) on hand. And do use auto ship. You can always change your next auto ship ship date to 'Order Now' to be safe.

When I started seeing intermittent bare shelves I paid more attention to how much of a stockpile I had on hand of basic supplies. I picked up basics when I saw them, in case they were out next week, and especially if the price hadn't jumped yet: rice, flour, cheese, butter/margarine, pasta, peanut butter, etc. We had a few weeks we were substituting when cereal shelves were empty repeatedly. That's one item we go thru rapidly, so I don't have more than a half week of extra. Then lunch foods were MIA. It's so random.
We have lots stored, we won't go hungry, but convenience foods seem to be the weak link.

I ended up getting a case of Fancy Feast from the grocery store. She likes that too... I'm thinking I'm going to probably convince her to go back to dry though, at least half the time. That wet stuff is too expensive and a PIA to find.

We get our pet food direct from the manufacturers because of dh's job and we've had a few delays in the last few months.

I order toilet bowl cleaner from Amazon. They are out of what I usually order. I was able to place an order for an alternative product. That is something I do not want to be without.

My town, even before Covid, was downsizing products in stores. I can’t remember the last time I bought a pair of shoes in a store…..because they didn’t have my size. When I wore contacts, my travel sized supplies had to be ordered online, and a bunch of other items too……items that Target, Walmart and FM stopped carrying. I’m lucky so far in that Sheldon’s food has been available at a local, independent pet store. Harriet’s food has always been available at Costco. So how man6 gallons of gas the equivalent to a shipping box?

I read an article yesterday that stores are playing games. They are putting just 1 row of product on a shelf or a few packages or cans to make it look like shortages, so people buy more. I don't know if this is true or not but I can see the psychology to it. Still they would have to restock constantly to sell more so I don't see the sense of that, who knows.
It's about time for me to order another case of paper towels and TP, and laundry detergent . We are trying to use up our older home canned goods. I found 2 quarts of peaches from 2017, they were sealed and smelled good but that's 5 years. I have set 4 years as a limit. Now if we were starving or hungry they would be eaten.
People are talking about fertilizer, here we have 2 big turkey farms. They take that and spread it on fields, they generate tons of it and its the best stuff you can buy, its finally lost its potency in my garden, worked for years.
In our little towns and the city north I'm not seeing that much shortages. I can go to different stores and find what I need. Big Lots has a lot of stuff, Kroger, Save A Lot and if need be the Dollar Stores. Cat food is short, so I buy from Chewy. I pick up some here and there when I find it. Even Pet Smart last time I went was scarce. And we buy meat from the amish so we are stocked up on that. We won't be hungry, we have plenty. Right now worried more about using up our stockpile so we don't have to throw food away, I will restock as we go along. If it starts looking really bad, then I will put a ton back.
MPL, if the old kitty without teeth isn't eating dry food its likely really hurting her mouth. Can you keep feeding him/her soft food? Fancy Feast is less expensive.

She's not old or missing many teeth, they just pulled 3. My other cat that had all the teeth on the one side of his mouth removed the same day is wolfing down the dry food like nothing happened. The vet said cats don't really use their teeth to chew their food anyhow, they mostly just swallow it whole.
I'll likely keep giving her a can a day and if she's still hungry she can eat the dry. She was doing fine off of it for years and I can buy a 16 pound bag of Science Diet for $45 that lasts both cats nearly 2 months. The cans were .89/each $20/case of 24 and I'd need almost 4 cases a month for just her.

I know- everything involves trade-offs and most of the time I buy something on-line it's because the stores here seem to focus on the latest and greatest and on variety. When I needed another case for my 4-year old iPhone the local stores had mass quantities of cases for the latest iPhone and none for mine. I'm grateful for the on-line option because many times I've been able to buy something on-line and pick it up in the store, thus avoiding all the supply chain issues and knowing without driving there that it's in stock.

I can believe that, considering some of Sheldon’s spewing I have cleaned up. It is mostly full sized cat chow nuggets.

My cats never would eat Science Diet. These 2 will eat some like crazy then the next day won't touch it. They just don't like any kind of fish cat food. They will eat tuna once in awhile so I pretty much stick to beef and poultry. I do get different kinds of kibble, right now I have some weight management kibble for them also.
I thought the kitty had all her teeth out, so that's different.

Thankfully, our kitty has never been picky. He's been on Science Diet dry for about 4 years to combat urinary tract issues and we added the same formula in wet food this year due to his IBS because the dry alone contributed to constipation. I feed the chicken versions because the smell is slightly less awful than the fish ones.

I went to Aldi today for wine and they had both my creamer and stevia packets back on the shelf, so I grabbed those too. I saw chicken tenders as well but my freezer is brimful at the moment.

I know I've seen products more "spreadout" - but I think that might have been because manufacturers "buy" or are gauranteed so much shelf space for ALL their products - and since there was a period of time when manufacturers stopped producing a dozen different versions of the same stuff - and only produced 3 or 4 versions - the 3 or 4 versions needed to fill in all the empty space the manufacture "contracted" for...
I reckoned that was the reason for some of the empty shelf space - when there were still products available to purchase. As in the store wasn't out of say pasta - they just didn't have the twelve varieties of Penne pasta made by each manufacturer they just had 4 varieties.
OK. I guess that does mean some people didn't get the kind of pasta they wanted. I buy basic pasta (whole wheat if I can get it). And that's usually on the self.

It seems like they were, but when I go through Lowes, Q and A, they are now made in China. Not sure when this changed or if it is model specify, because it is next to impossible to tell on the websites. ETA: Chatted with Frigidaire and all of their chest freezers are made in China.

I will say that when my favorite items go on sale, I tend to buy at least 2 of them. Publix doesn't require this for their BOGOS, but it does save me a little. I only buy one if I haven't tried it.

I just looked it up and the articles said about half of Frigidaire's freezers are made in the USA.

I asked Frigidaire directly about chest freezers and was told, all their chest freezers are now made in China. I looked at reviews on Lowes for uprights and in about April 2020, people start to complain that their freezers are marked made in China.

Shipping cardboard can be composted. I'm using it in my garden beds to put down under mulch and compost.

I have 3 boxes right now that need to be dealt with. How do you use it under your mulch? Just remove the tape and lay it down and put mulch on top of it? I don’t compost, but if I can find a use for all the cardboard boxes we get, that’s not too much trouble, I’m interested. We have recycling bins, but it seems that lately, those bins just get dumped with the regular garbage.

I've been saving mine all winter and am lining flower beds.
