I don't think the deer is "earth shattering" or meaningful in any way for the religious (in the article). Animals are not human and human are not animals for most religious traditions.
There is no parallel between the way it's genetic makeup played out and how a human's genetic makeup plays out. No matter what a human's genetic make up is - they should adhere to what God wants humans to be. It's all about pleasing God.
So, I can see the religious organization that organized the hunt (as a fund raiser) not having any issues with the deer or using it to increase the funds raised.
If anything how it's talked about and discussed in the community can be used to pressure anyone who's 'different' to continue to blend in (or stay in the closet) or to feel shame (that God made them the way they are - and because of it they cannot be what God wants the most.)

Interesting stuff.
I took a course in reproductive biopsychology in college. Best course I took. We talked a lot about the normal development and behaviors, and then the more rare (but still significant numbers) variants. For humans at least (likely other animals, too, but I don't remember anymore) the default design is the female. The presence of certain hormones at the right time during development does a design makeover to male. So an XX individual could develop a male bodyform if those hormones were present at the right/wrong time in development. Likewise, an XY individual could develop in the default female bodyform if the hormones were not present. And you could get intermediate bodyforms if hormone levels fluctuated during the development window. And then there are the unusual individuals with an extra chromosome: XXY, XXX, XYY. Nature is not binary, it's a spectrum.
One other thing I remember from this course, also about deer - studies watching mating behavior. Ten percent of males regularly attempted to mate with other males, not females. Homosexuality occurs in nature, even if it's not useful reproductively. Thus it's not an inherited trait, because those males have no offspring. It's an independently arising trait.
