No. I’m too old to learn something new, and this thing—even though I’d heard of them over a year ago— makes absolutely no sense.

My guess - is because their friend says he made $250,000 in a few months with a mere $1,000 investment.

There's some connection to cryptocurrency because NFTs use blockchain. That's about as far as I've gotten for why someone would buy one.
Haven't gotten much farther on my scheme to sell NFTs of my photos for money because people are buying stupider NFTs that what I take photos of.

The face doesn't need to always be in front of a burning home. Can be used when a touch of smiling evil works.

To keep it relevant (and desirable) the owner will need to "market" the image and get paid for it's use. Otherwise - 10 years from now - will anyone recoginze the image? (Think about the value of a Grumpy Cat mug for example... I'm guessing new viewers of Agents of Shield - won't even notice the Phil's Grumpy Cat mug on the first viewing - even though he holds it in his hand in an episode. They will need a wiki to tell them why the show thought it would be a good prop.) If owning the NFT doesn't keep people from freely using the image - then it makes the NFT not much more than a "collectible". An image where there are dozens of images just like it (or that can be made via photoshop). Isn't that why celebrities copyright their "catch phrases" and probably their "style" or whatever thing that could be considered their "hallmark" or "trademark"? So their lawyers can go after anyone who uses the catch phrase (or whatever else) for profit (or not) without also paying the celebrity?

Truthfully, I know little to nothing how NFTS work once purchased. Sorry. Just like I know zero about cryptocuurrency and don't plan on learning about it. I will leave that to the young people who come after me. I am getting to that age where learning certain new 'things' just don't interest me anymore.

One of the articles I read was about a company that spent millions on the NFT of an original Dune book. (Literally images of the pages the seller then burned the book so the images were the only "copy".) The company made an announcement of what they planned to do (movies, TV show, book free to everyone) which everyone promptly pointed out they were idiots because the book itself was still copyrighted and the NFT was not the copyright.

Speaking of NFTs... Melania Trump’s auction of NFT, hat and painting fall short of $250,000 opening bidWhat do Melania Trump’s wide-brimmed white hat, a painting of her wearing the hat and an NFT of an animated version of the hat have in common? They were all put up for auction by the former first lady – and as of early Wednesday, failed to rake in the target price of a $250,000 opening bid. Trump announced earlier this month that she would auction off the autographed hat, which she wore to meet the French president, Emmanuel Macron, and his wife during an official state visit in 2018. The auction also included a watercolor painting of herself wearing the hat and a non-fungible token, or NFT, of the painting. She insisted that all bids be made in Solana tokens, a cryptocurrency. When the auction concluded on Wednesday there were only five bids on the items, each around the minimum requirement of 1,800 Solana tokens. Although the minimum number of tokens was met, a steep dive in the crypto market over the last two weeks resulted in the final bid being approximately $170,000 – about $80,000 short of the opening bid threshold.
