TurboTax is no longer offering free electronic filing for people under a certain level of income. I see there are several groups out there that do. What company(ies) do you like for the free filing? Or which would you recommend that people stay away from? Super simple returns for 3 of the 'kids'.

I've used TaxAct as a free file many times before and was happy with it. I would have done it again this year, but I've done all three of ours with TurboTax free file the past two years and was feeling too lazy to re-enter everything in, especially since my older son's is kind of messy so paid the $30 or $40 for the program this year. Make sure you go through the IRS link and not the software's "free" version because sometimes that isn't really free. www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

I did buy Turbo Tax this year and Turbo Tax accepted the federal return last weekend. The IRS accepted it on Thursday. Will be interesting to see when I get my $100 back.
I will not pay to file the state return because I owe $12. Why make the cost any more than $12?

Looks like my choices in NY are OLT, Tax Act, and FreeTaxUSA. But Tax Act says under age 56 (so we could only use it this year before DH turns 56), and FreeTaxUSA has a lower income limit that will probably snag DS4 next year (I'd rather only learn one new one). So best choice is OLT?

Thank you for starting this and hoping you don't mind if I tack on my questions!
Our high school kid got a first job and earned less than $2000 last year. I had no idea what to do, figured I need to file those taxes separately. Does anyone know if that changes anything in the taxes that DH and I file for us since we're still obviously supporting the kid full time?

He doesn't have to file at all because he's under the 12K standard deduction, but he might want to if they withheld any taxes so he can get them back. It doesn't change your taxes, he would file separately even if he's a dependent.

Thank you, that is exactly what I needed to know. Still need to check the paperwork he brings home to see if they took any taxes out.

One of them has started working on it.
