Iβm buying a new car at some point.
Pilot (8 seater) or passport (5 seater).
Letβs hear your best arguments

Pilot. It has a longer track record than the Passport, can hold more people, surprisingly gets the same gas mileage and the cost is about the same.

My DH bought a Passport in November last year. He liked that it was less than money than the Pilot and he didnβt need the 3rd row of seats. Heβs been very happy with his purchase and no regrets.
FWIW, he thought that the Passport was enough money outlayed.

Do you need to drive other people's kids around along with your kids at the same time too? Sometimes. Little kids, tweens or teens? What sports do they play? Equipment lugged around.

Mine are 14 and 15. Theyβre huge.
They both play soccer. DS sometimes plays basketball. DD May do track. Nothing equipment intensive.
I also haul around an 80 pound dog

Smaller one gets slightly better gas mileage. Bigger one is well, bigger.
Same reliability

If those are the two options, I'd go for the Pilot.
I drove the Passport, but it never felt quite right to me. I didn't like the dashboard display and my foot sat weirdly on the gas pedal.
If you want to branch out from Honda, I have a Highlander that I really enjoy.

You will be moving them into college dorms soon. Bigger is better.
I always had to take instruments into consideration: string bass, cello, tuba, electric bass + amp...

Smaller one gets slightly better gas mileage. Bigger one is well, bigger. Same reliability Unlikely. Passport is name badge was revived after a long gap of generations. What's on sale now is from 2019 model year on. Basically, a brand-new model with maybe a 3 year history. It's built on the Pilot platform, but since its very young it will have lots of shakedown issues. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_PassportIf you go for it, I would lease not buy. Pilot has been in continuous production and should be more of a stable platform. YMMV. I'd check out current generation issues as it looks like they tweak often. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_PilotThey have the same chassis, fuel tank, engine, etc. The Passport is 6 inches shorter, but at least an inch taller. They weigh ridiculously similar. Pilot comes with lots of standard safety features and looks like many aren't even available on the Passport. I shouldn't have gone down this rabbit hole, as you might not even be serious about these vehicles, but it was interesting to me ... so I'll post it for now. Opti conclusion - Passport is a Sporty 5 person vehicle for Honda for marketing purposes and not a family car like the Pilot. Value depends on your desires and packages chosen. Please note Passport has lower gas mileage in many trims and feels like what could be the vehicle of choice if Breaking Bad was filmed in the present.

I think one should pick whatever vehicle fits them, but this feels like the Passport could be a rerun of her VW experience. (Gut feel.)

I'd go with the eight-seater; but then in four years I'd get a CRV. Oh wait, that's what I did. <----best argument

Due to the kids' ages, I'd lease the bigger one for 3 years. Then I would buy the HRV. Plenty of room for you and the dog. And it's a cool car.

What about a Subaru? People obsessively love theirs. Good in snow. Room for the giant dog in the back so you keep your seats clean.
I've looking at a Subaru myself since the Fit is longer in the North American market. πππ Hopefully in 2025 when I plan on getting a new car Honda will bring it back.
But as far as the options presented, definitely Pilot.

Surprisingly good space for a small car, and I know people are hard on rental cars, but this one only had 13k miles and the steering was stiff, lots of road noise, etc. But it was roomy for my kids and the two large suitcases I had in the back!

I think Subarus are interesting, but I don't know where I'd go for service.

I know she has a Honda dealership relatively close (since she tends to drop it off at the dealer for some issues), not sure how far the Subaru dealership is for swamp.

Same distance as the Honda dealership. I use a local mechanic who specializes in foreign cars.
