I am on the board of a very small all volunteer 501c3 charity. It’s been a 501c3 since 2014. We are advocating for Deaf supportive housing in NJ. Hoping we get a long term lease on a vacant dorm at the NJ school for deaf. Have a developer who will get funding from state and renovate to senior apartments I became treasurer this year after being away for 3 years, was secretary before Anyway just found out need to file forms 990 and 990a for a charity. I have no problems with 990 BUT 990a requires financial info from last 4 years. The former treasurer left and won’t respond )no worries about any financials) But don’t know if she filed 990 or if it was filed don’t have a copy Questions Has anyone done a 990 a? Does anyone know how to get copies of previous years?
I’m fine with being a treasurer- being a secretary was difficult due to working with ASL interpreters

I've never done a 990 or 990a before. Thinking logically, the 990 and 990a forms, if created, could exist with the former treasurer, at the non-profit's place of business, at an accountant's office if an outside accountant was used, and/or with the IRS. You can handle the first first three options. Personally, I would contact the IRS. Ask them about how to get copies of the returns that have been filed. There is a form - Form 4506-A - which you can use to request a copy of Form 990. I don't know about the 990a form though. And I think Form 990's are available to the public through an IRS site, but maybe just the 990's and not the accompanying financial statements.

Thanks! I found irs site and 990N forms had been filed . I’ll look for the 990N form, supposed to be much simpler (“postcard”)

I file the 990-n for several local charities each year. It's very simple -- can be done completely online. Basically just need to list the name and address of the organization, name and address of the presiding official, check the block that gross receipts were less than $50k, and hit send!
It will probably take longer for you to set up the account (screename, pw, security questions, etc) than it will to fill out the form.

But I’m just finding irs explanation page and lots of ‘for profit?’ Sites Do you have link for the actual form? And thanks so much for your help
