What's the most expensive car repair you were quoted, and did you have it done?

I am NOT a cool cars person- basic transportation for me.
In June 2020, my 2012 Nissan Sentra developed transmission problems. I was driving up to Des Moines and realized I was flooring the gas pedal going uphill and still couldn't get above 40 mph. It got worse close to my destination even on level roads.
The stealership told me that the transmission needed replacing- that would be $3,900 for a rebuilt one. There was also a power steering issue. I sort of knew about that- a couple of times over 2 years the power steering wasn't working when I started the car up. It really could not be driven safely- totally different experience from driving a car with manual steering, which I'd done decades ago. I turned it off, crossed my fingers and turned it back on again and it was OK. (The engine generated codes that meant "something might be wrong with power steering". Real useful.) Another $2,000 to fix that.
I actually told them to fix the transmission but DS, the voice of sanity, said, "Mom, you're polishing the brass on Titanic". I called them and told them not to do anything. Got it back to DS and DDIL's house and bought a Honda Civic instead. I donated the Nissan to Habitat for Humanity and they got $1,700 for it. Good decision. And it ticks me off that they even quoted the work without telling me that the car was worth so little.
