Glad it worked for you. If you are willing, please PM me your cellphone provider. The IRS site may work different than what I dealt with as they might troll federal databases not just state ones. It's Ting with a Verizon SIM card. So is Ting your Provider, or do they look you up as a Verizon customer? I'm glad it worked though, when I started doing the research it felt like using providers that weren't AT&T, Verizon or Tmobile might leave one out in the cold. For example, if I still had my prepaid Virgin Mobile phone, they would not see that as a valid option.

When you finally fail the automatic system, you do not get that live person right away. You get a nice little timer that updates, so you have to stay tethered to your device of choice until they come on. I was lucky though. I think my wait was somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour. Forget how long that part was, but at least the rep was good and professional.
I do wonder though what the cellphone check is. Since I can barely use this phone, I am not making calls or texts. Doesn't make it less mine, just makes it an expensive useless piece of pretend smartphone until I get in a class to learn how to use it.

eta: Up until a few months ago I had a Sprint SIM in my phone, but Ting moved over to T-Mobile. That SIM didn't work for me at all, so they gave me the Verizon one instead.

I have Tmobile, and I've had this particular phone at least 5months when I did the verify. Its predecessor, the Albatross, I had for far too long and finally got it switched over to this phone which I thought would be easier to use. Right now, it is not, unless I want to call 911. It appears the Tmobile store locks down the phones via many of the options, so if you are a first-time user with little to no smartphone knowledge you are toast. It comes setup to time out the fastest and other user-unfriendly choices. It's somewhat amazing I did not throw Albatross into a wall or something because of that timeout choice someone made for me.

The display timeout? You should be able to just change that in the settings.

Tmobile minions had no problem with it, because they use them all the bloody time while working. I got my first smartphone right b4 the pandemic and all the shutdowns. No docs. You all have been navigating these smartphone menus possibly for years. My last working usable cellphone was a popular slider phone pre-paid which I had the tiny manual. Dumb phone circa 2004 and could have lasted past 2018 had I paid the top-up in time. I get frustrated trying to guess where in the heck they hide stuff. The green phone icon should allow me to just put in numbers and make calls. But oh no, it throws me into contacts. I can call from contacts and have no obvious options to do anything else. I did not do a phone of contacts and sometimes you just want to call places not in there. Every single thing is a $%#!! trial. I only have two contacts in, because my coworker helped me. I could do many standup routines on this phone and the last. Many.

Usually for them you can just swipe down from the top and the "Settings" icon looks like a little gear cog in the upper right.
If you go to "Display" under the settings it should have a setting for Screen Timeout. Mine has a bunch of choices from 15 seconds to 10 minutes.

To put my dilemma in perspective, in 2004 there were no smartphones. Windows XP was the current version of Windows. Now if you buy new its probably whatever the heck Windows 11 is. Android was an idea and being worked on, but was not actually a phone OS until 2008. The original Iphone rolled out a bit earlier. Apple now has the Iphone 13 out and is on the 15th version of its OS. I missed all of them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone#:~:text=Current%20devices%201%20iPhone%2011%20%282019%E2%80%93present%29%202%20iPhone,Pro%20%282021%E2%80%93present%29%208%20iPhone%2013%20Pro%20Max%20%282021%E2%80%93present%29 My car is even older than that as my TV is from my divorce in the early 90s. This is life underfunded. I wouldn't even have this smartphone had my Mom not died and left some money to us kids. I planned to have a smartphone for two years off that, not sure if I will make that if I don't get employment soon, and employment that at the minimum pays my bills.

First phone was Android and probably set at that 15 seconds. Its gone now. I have an Iphone now. These are the three things I know, and I don't always remember the middle one. I can turn on the phone. Sometimes I have to look up how to turn the damn thing off because the two button thing is not normal to me, even if I see the value in it. I know 911 is in the middle of the phone and is way too easy to activate. I can see texts when the phone is on. I can't delete the bastards. I don't understand why that is not an option. Even the books from the library don't even say anything about it in the appendix. I am developing a hate of these phones and the process that one has to go through to acquire one. For a prepaid phone you still can roll into your local Walmart or Target and just buy the damn phone and whatever top up level you need/want to live at. It is hours just to buy non prepaid one, and then if you have not collapsed in exhaustion from standing in the damn store, the phone person has no interest in actually helping you use the damn thing. Other customers, just play with it, waves hands. I can sign up for Apple training it turns out, but Tmobile doesn't tell you that. There are all these stupid bits of info too one has to remember or have. Just turn on the phone and use it? Heck no. Remember your password, hope your face and your phone agree and then there are manufacturer's IDs, your provider's IDs.

Wouldn't it be more user friendly though instead of letting the phone default to the shortest setting, the seller picks one in the middle? The apple person over the phone helped to reset the timeout, but I remember nothing from then. It was a very stressful call as I was only talking to them because Tmobile couldn't help me, and I had to do enough on the phone so ID.me would work.

Why can't you spend some time playing with your phone or googling how tos? This (new phone) is an easily surmountable obstacle if you put in one iota of effort.

I've put in at least two Iotas of effort. I'm sorry if my being income free for months and being my primary concern seems unimportant to you.

If you need the phone to be able to complete the form so you can get UI then I would think figuring out how it works would be of highest priority. Google can answer pretty much any question you have about your particular model of phone. It has to be faster than the way you are doing things now.

No one is telling you not having an income is not important. It's extremely important, as is figuring out the issues with ID.me, but if you're having trouble with screen time out then help yourself and do a quick Google search. Every smartphone has a settings function, display is there. Iphone settings icon looks like a bike gear. I've never owned an i-anything but I just figured it out by googling.

Opt4 sorry you’re so frustrated with the iPhone. Suggest you make an appointment at an apple store. They are very helpful don’t worry you can take the time needed . Go back if first session didn’t answer all Might also be YouTube videos to help Suggest to write down some questions you have already to make sure they’re taken care of. I have a 87 yr old deaf friend who bought a new iPhone and Apple Watch. The apple store got a person who uses ASL sign language to help her! It’s no cost beyond gas to get there Hoping you get help to lower your frustration

Everytime I turn around its new shit I have to track. Apply for this job, make a new PW and possibly login and track it. Then Oh, please consider signing up to this new system we use to schedule your interview. No mas on the damn phone please. The wheeking skinny pig is annoying me enough already.

So ID.me to NJ handoff still has not occurred. Two other people got through the phone lines to talk to Gov. Murphy about their unemployment. The sad thing is he really believes there aren't ongoing problems.
I'm going to move on to another thread for issues related to this. You may or may not be happy to know that I did figure out how to call a number from the Iphone, but the timing and the presets are still really horribly annoying.
From two different library books I learned its counter-intuitive for me, you need to use the keyboard first to put in the number you call. However, since the phone icon defaults to the last thing you did, it does not always offer you the keyboard to make the call. I think Apple has decided most of us want to yell at our phones, so calling through the keypad is not easy! The keyboard is not available from the initial screen. What?
So, I made my first successful call with the phone but could not figure out how to pick up a call, because the screen was on something else. The library was kind of enough to renew the one book. The other one I want to see is on order status, so who knows when or if I will get to look at it. I prefer paper over videos especially given my habits.

The program is nowhere near ready to deal with 100% of the population instead of the 50 to 75% it might be doing now. I keep wondering how they actually check your phone number in real-time and then fail you with no error message except 'Failed" or something similar.

I tried to use this via the IRS and, of course, failed. Now they are sending me emails telling me to complete my verification. They are "here to help." Ridiculous!

And IT coworker had shared the news about the IRS using ID.me, so when I was logging into my IRS account recently I decided I'd try to register. I managed, but it was a lot of hoops. I can't imagine my 82 year mother (who does not own a smart phone) being able to do it. And then it turns out the IRS is walking away from the requirement. Now what happens to my info in their files?

The IRS is a scammy government department. IRS ‘lost’ thousands of returns and the returns from wealthy people - Musk, Besoz etc- were made public . Politicized for showing how little taxes were paid -in some years- probably to help the tax the rich mantra.

Per ID.me I think it's only supposed to stay on their servers for 30 days. However, I have no idea if there is a handoff of info to govts they contract with. I think its fatally flawed for govt programs as there is a large swath of people who do not have smartphones. Or do not use cellphones as their primary phone. I am still learning. I've taken a few online courses cuz pandemic, no in store classes to be had.

The very very rich have better and better paid lawyers than the IRS has. The govt net on many of these isn't good, but sadly it is easy to auto skim poor people's returns and find things. They also have the least ability to fight back from fines, judgments and the like.
