I just read an article saying that 5 people were arrested for looting damaged homes in Kentucky looking for guns, valuables and even cars that they could take. Two arrested were from Michigan, which means they purposely drove down to Kentucky just to steal from those impacted by the storms.
I never would have seen death/destruction as an opportunity to steal things when no ones looking. People suck.

This reminds me of a story warning people about homes being robbed while they were at a funeral. Every time I think people can not get more despicable they come up with a new low.

I had T Tops stolen out of my car one year. When I called the insurance company they said there was a rash of t top thefts all over. I'm like why? Explanation there was a hurricane on east coast - Hugo I think and thieves (organized) knew there would be a demand for things like T Tops. So this doesn't surprise me in the least. I just wish - well never mind

I think it's always been a thing... to loot after a disaster. It just wasn't in the media.
Think back on coverage of other disasters - the roads are blocked off - but the roads are clear "so that emergency personnel can get in as needed and then the barricades remain. Or the announcement that ONLY emergency personnel are being allowed. Or images of people sitting/living outside what is left of their homes/property - even though they have someplace to go.
I'm guessing there's usually an increase in security/police to deter or catch the looters.

I have always been told to make sure someone stays at the deceased home during the funeral to prevent theft. My funeral director friend never publishes the details of planned lunches, etc he said too many homes have been robbed, especially when they are day long affairs. ☹️

When my neighborhood got hit by tornadoes and there were a lot of homes that were so damaged they couldn’t be lived in until they got repaired, we had a bunch of out of state people come through stealing stuff. My next door neighbor had all the copper wiring ripped out of their walls.
One of our neighbors took it on herself to patrol the empty houses, looking for out of state vehicles. She found one, one day, and pulled her pick up in behind their truck and called 911. Then she got out and started grilling the two men in the house about who they were and why they were there. She was extremely lucky they didn’t pull a weapon on her, but waited for the cops to get there and arrest them. She told me later she realized she did something really stupid, but she said she was really, really pissed at them and didn’t think about the possible downside.
One of the looters climbed over the fence at a substation that he thought was off line. It wasn’t. He electrocuted himself trying to steal the copper wiring. Not sorry.
People are shit sometimes.

I do not need to have the baggage handlers at my relatively small airport know that I am traveling. When I was working, I used my office address.

Surprise, surprised, surprise. I probably could have gone online and signed up given lack of verification on crap like this. Oh, and what is government going to do with 10 billion it recovers? Steal it in another manner.

Steal it in another manner. It was astonishing how the GOP government handed those funds out like trick or treat candy. Almost no checks. You would think everyone must realize how shitty humans can be by now.

My first thought was that at, what, $10,000 maybe $20,000 a person that is a lot of unemployment fraud. So a little research: The opportunities have attracted garden-variety criminals, jail and prison inmates and at least a few desperate first-time offenders. But the most prolific offenders appear to be transnational organized crime groups out of West Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe, law enforcement officials say. How billions in pandemic aid was swindled by con artists and crime syndicates

ISO doesn't travel. I love to travel. Before we got together I thought I wanted someone that loves to travel. But this way I can up and go whenever I want and he's home to take care of the house and dogs. It's great but it's sad that one of the reasons it works is to deter being robbed.

The sad part is a lot of people think their neighbour that collected $2,000/mth for a few months is why the fraud bill hit the billions.
