He's struggling to have "only" a chair now. He had a sofa to himself before.

Your living room is lovely, buystoys. I like the placement of furniture; it clearly creates conversation space without crowding at all.

Thank you, finnime. For a while I was nervous about getting too much furniture, but the room is so big we kind of need it. I'm so happy about it!

So after poking around on that blog, I finally realized something. She is very big on how architectural details done right, immediately improve a plain boxy room. THAT is what made this house so appealing to me.
It’s in a suburb I said from day 1 I didn’t want to move to. But it’s in an older, established neighborhood with an association that still has a little influence, so I thought it might be ok. I was not impressed by the exterior when we first drove up, it is literally the same house as my other one, just much bigger. The color of the bricks here are blah.
But the inside got me. Even though the kitchen is small, the layout works really well for us. The wow factor was the details. The wainscoting and all the other trim, the built in shelves and the ceiling beams in the den (that I wish had not been painted). Things like that. Even the door handles are unusual. Not that I have a lot of experience viewing door handles, I’m just use to plain door knobs lol.
Understanding that makes me feel a little better, because while I want to understand the basics of decorating, I don’t like fussy rooms with a lot of stuff in them. So I think the details in the rooms themselves can help make the rooms look nice without me having to go far beyond my comfort zone as far as “stuff”.
Just rambling because learning and thinking about this kind of stuff is fun and kind of relaxing or something.

So, since I don’t have anything else I’d rather do right now, here are some examples The hardware on my front door, that I’ve been unable to get ALL the paint off of, so far. And yes, I need to touch up that white spot on the door. The door handles throughout the house. There is paint on literally every handle, knob and hinge in the whole darn house. I wouldn’t have chosen these handles myself, but I can deal with them and I’m not interested in replacing them anytime soon. The circle on the bottom is the keyhole for the lock on the other side of the door. Bedroom closets have glass doorknobs. The trim in the entryway, living room and yoga/dining room (where I took the pic). I will never paint that trim myself, no matter how dingy it looks. I’ll pay a professional to do that. The trim around every door, doorway and window in the house. A lot of it is mucked up with sloppy painting…. too thick, drips, globs and such. I’m trying not to get started right now on all the things dummy (previous homeowner) messed up, but you can get an idea of how bad it is, just from these photos. I think I’ve already posted pictures that show the wainscoting. Anyway, these are examples of some of the details that I think made me love the house when I first saw it, even though only a couple of rooms were “done”.

I'll follow this up with pictures of the inside later this week, once I have the blinds installed and boxes cleared. But this is the before and after of my house exterior: What has been done: replace shutters, paint flashing black, refresh paint on all trim, paint all wrought iron gate and railings, paint front door teal, install railing above portico. You can't really tell but there's a brick wall on the right side with a gate in it, that leads to a brick patio, very private. That leads to the back yard.

Fixed the pics!
And I love the detail in your home, @pinkcshmere. That's just the sort of thing that appeals to me. My interior doors have glass knobs, too.

countrygirl2 this is the thread I suggested earlier. I’d be happy if you joined us here. Knee Deep in Water Chloe I know you are preparing to move, but I love your style and I’ve loved every picture you’ve shared of your home and outdoor spaces. I hope when you get situated, or just whenever you feel like it, you share more. In the meantime, if you have thoughts or ideas to share, I welcome that too. I really, really like looking at houses and seeing what other people do with their homes, inside and out. I drive by houses and wish I could ask the owners if I could get a peep inside. Not that I would ever actually do that lol. My curiosity is fed strictly through the Internet and when people IRL invite me to their homes. I don’t judge anyone for how they decorate their homes or even if they don’t…… especially not someone that has welcomed me into their home, IRL, or through pictures. I just like to seeeeee.

I moved Big Bertha today. I’ve had her for 10 years now, and some years I took better care of her than others. Her “sister” that was in the same pot when I brought her home, died years ago. I’m not a good plant Mom even though I keep trying. She always lived in a corner of my den that got good sunlight and when I moved here, I put her in a spot in the den that got the best sunlight in the room. There’s no such thing as “good” sunlight anywhere in this house, unfortunately. She’s been thriving lately, but because she hasn’t been growing straight up, she’s gotten so big that she was kind of in the way in her good spot in the den. So I moved her in front of the window in the yoga/dining room. I don’t like how she looks in that spot, but at least she’ll get morning sunlight until I figure out where her permanent home will be. And get her a better looking pot. I’m just proud that she’s still alive and thriving despite my black thumb. She doesn’t look that big on this picture, but trust me, she’s really, really big. And almost as tall as I am even though she’s not grown straight vertically because bad plant Moms like me don’t turn their indoor plants like they should. I think I’m done rambling for tonight now.

I can see the updated black and white paint with that portico railing, it looks very classic and fresh.

I also can't see the pics from my laptop. not sure how much help I'll be, finnime. do you have a shutterfly account, or something similar? I've not been able to post pics in awhile, since Tapatalk isn't cooperating.

finnime I can see the pictures in your last post. It’s something how relatively small (but not necessarily inexpensive lol) things can make a big difference. Your house was already nice, but it looks fantastic in the “after” picture. Great job!

Okay, I think I've got it, using imgur. At least plugginaway22 could see something! I'll keep playing with the options. For some reason village.photos is not cooperating with you all having access.

For the first 15 years we owned it the front yard was dominated by 3 enormous Norway maples, with English ivy consuming the ground beneath. Then one tree failed, a huge branch fell off and took the roof edge with it. Then another tree, and the last, and I hired a landscaping company to design new front and side gardens, remove the stumps and dig out the tenacious ivy. It took 3 days, 2 of them with an excavator, to clear the ground. They put in two cherry trees in the front. They also put in an unmortared stone edge in the gardens off the patio. So $11,000 later, we're all set!

Pink Cashmere - we have that exact same trim in our house. I love it. I have never noticed trim before, but I think that it adds so much to the house. Our house was built in late 1980s, we are in the nice suburban neighborhood, although there are a lot more now.

My light was delivered this morning. It’s not installed, but I played with it and the problem is just like I thought AFTER I bought it. It would be perfect if a table was under it, otherwise, I think I might bump into myself, and I’m not 6’ tall. Mister didn’t believe me when I admitted the potential problem and said that it can hang low if there’s a table under it. He thought hanging lights were always high enough to walk under, whether there was a dining table under the light or not. I suggested he go look at the light in the breakfast nook. He’d never noticed how low it is, because there’s a table under it. If not for the table, even DD, who is the shortest adult in our family, would walk into it. So do I hang it in the yoga/dining room anyway and just go on and make it just a dining room? The bonus before I find a table might be that if they hit their head a couple of times, maybe it will discourage a certain person from always taking the scenic route through there to get to the kitchen despite my request to not wear outdoor shoes in there. Besides that, no one else uses the room or even goes in there but me. Or do I replace the light in the breakfast nook with this one and find another light for the yoga/dining room? The light in the breakfast nook now is ok, but I planned to eventually replace it, just not yet. I think I might need to let Mister recover a little from his sticker shock before I buy another light, so there’s that to consider too. Ugh!
