Your shelves look amazing! That looks totally polished and designed to me. We have a shelf thing going too, only I just stuffed mine with books, and of course the cat treats on the third shelf because its the only place in the house that the cat can't climb to get them. My husband wants to rip out these bookshelves and replace them with gothic style library shelves, but that is years away after the window project and the dining room ceiling project. I do need to drive out to that store and look for living room furniture. Right now I am embarrassed when we have people over to the house (and we have lots of guests because everyone wants to see the house). I have an empty living room and I feel like one of those stereotypes where people buy a fancy house and have no furniture because they really couldn't afford the house. Thank you! I have an overflowing bookshelf in my living room. I have a LOT of books, even though I got rid of a lot of books when I was on my serious decluttering binge several years ago at my other house. The bookcase is an eyesore, and I’m not sure what to do with all my books. I think I will probably eventually get a nice horizontal bookcase for them. Ethan Allen has a bee-you-tiful bookcase on clearance. It’s marked down to over $4k, originally over $12k. I drooled over it, but I have too much other stuff to buy to pay that much for a bookcase right now. So I’m good with a hard no on that. My living room is empty too, except for that bookcase and my desk. And some odds and ends in boxes that I still haven’t unpacked because I don’t know where to put it all. It doesn’t really bother me that much, except for the boxes. The living room at my other house was empty for years too, until I bought some barely used furniture from my ex MIL when she had a yard sale. I paid a whole $300 for the furniture. Then I gave it to DD when she moved out, and my living room was empty again. I’m kind of embarrassed too, but then I get over it, because if I invite people that I love into my home, if they really love me, they won’t judge me for having an empty living room. I wouldn’t judge them if theirs was empty. When my best friend from high school bought her first house, I wanted to come see it. She warned me that she didn’t have much furniture yet. And I was like, I don’t care if we sit on the floor, I just want to see your new house and be happy for you! And I meant it. So anyone that can’t give me that same energy, fuck ‘em! Don’t even come to my house!

I love it! I’ve been half-heartedly looking at flooring because what’s in our laundry room and kitchen has to go. That’s a little too busy I think for those areas, but I do like it.

Yea we have a smaller sized master bathroom so the busy floor doesn’t totally overwhelm the room, but it would be too much design for a larger space, I think. I found out after the fact, when the floor had already been installed, that when you use a floor with a busy pattern like that, it’s important that the tile and the room be monochromatic, or the pattern will be overwhelming. Everything else in the bathroom - walls, cabinets, shower tile - are shades of white or grey with a few black accents. I don’t think I could pull that off in a bigger room, either.

I don’t know that anyone other than interior designers do their entire house in a style. Most of us wing it. Most of my house is somewhat craftsman style with an earthy color pallette but I fell in love with a gorgeous floor tile called New Orleans and my master bathroom just had to have that floor, and the whole room is somewhat French and all in black/grey/white. Doesn’t fit with the decor in the rest of the house but fuck it. I firmly believe that if you love it, that’s what matters. So I’m with you on the “fuck it” part. The exterior of our house is what I’ve learned is a French countryside style. Ironically, it’s the exact same style of my other house. Like DD’s friend who lived across the street from my other house said when he came over with her, I bought the same house again, just bigger. So, at first I thought I wanted to decorate here with a kind of French country vibe, but now I know I prefer a more “polished” or something like that, vibe. I can do a little “rustic” or whatever, but overall, I prefer something different. I clearly don’t know what I’m doing. I know French Country is a style but not sure exactly what it entails myself. The tile sales lady said the tile I liked was French country, otherwise I wouldn’t have known My only other experience with it was a beautiful open kitchen/dining room with cathedral ceilings in a house I visited - they had hired a designer and she had painted the area in this warm, terra cotta type color that shaded from a cantelope color to more of a lemony-orange color, making the room feel like a sun soaked courtyard in an ancient chateau in the south of France. I loved it so much I went home and painted my great room orange. Mine looked like an orange creamsicle. DH was not pleased. Neither was I. That got repainted pretty quickly. Good thing paint is cheap.

This is what I tried to make do with, and made minor changes since I took the picture. It’s also before I painted. This view is what you see when you come in my front door.
vs something closer to what I really wanted, but didn’t really want to pay for At first I didn’t even know what to call it to search for it, then when I did and started finding it online, if it was close to what I saw in my head, it cost too much. I finally said screw it and ordered it. I put it together this morning and will probably be messing with it for a few days, trying to get it “just right”. The first ones I made in the top picture, even with the changes I tried, it always made me think “funeral home”, which was definitely not the look I was going for lol. Now I’m on the hunt for pretty vases to replace the clear glass ones I settled for. In the top picture, you can also see part of the wall art I had in the entryway at first. It is currently leaning against a wall in the living room until I figure out where to put it. I like the painting much better.

I like orange, but I don't think it will work too well here.

I LOVE THIS THREAD!
I've posted pictures of my house a bunch of times, so I won't bore you with repeats. We'll be moving this summer, and I'll share whatever it is coming up.

Our house is a major work-in-progress, so if I can figure out how to post pics as we get things done, I will! Built in 1997, this house belonged to a bachelor, who moved in to take care of his mom before she went to a nursing home and ugh....pink carpet in allllll the rooms except kitchen and hallway. I took down all the lacy curtain thingies and we put up blinds from Lowes. Major project so far - re-staining the deck. I'll try to add some pics tomorrow. DH has been fixing the pole barn, putting in a garden, putting up a pool, adding a fence around the pool, adding some new drainage pipes and diverting water from the basement walls etc. We have plans to paint all the walls (builder grade white now), add a wall to the LR to make a pantry, add access to pantry from the kitchen (remove part of a wall), rip up all the carpeting and put down LVP. The house is 2500 sq ft with the biggest room, FR, being something like 20x25 or so. It's going to be several years of work for sure! Thanks, Pink Cashmere for starting this thread, I too love to see how others decorate their homes!

I’ll share pictures too, if someone tells me how…… and explains how to do it…….. like you would explain to, maybe a 5yo? This video shows how to load pictures into Imgur and then post them to a forum. Its the process that I normally use. daisy, resolution posted this on the first page, and it’s how I learned to post pictures. She may have created a monster though, because now I can show you all what I’m talking about instead of trying to describe it, and I like it! I’d love to see any pictures you’re willing to share!

It took me quite a while to figure out the fluorescent lights at Lowe’s make paint look totally different from what it looks like in your house. Worst case was when I was going for a grey pink delicate shade and got pepto pink. Mr Happy walked into the room, looked at the nightmare wall I was painting, said ‘nope’ and turned around and drove to Lowe’s for a much more restrained shade. That shook my paint confidence so now I always buy at least five little sample cans and try them out in the actual room for at least a week before deciding. Yes it costs a little and takes a little time but cheaper than buying a whole gallon of color horror that has to be repainted.

Every time I decide to paint, I buy samples and try them out. I think you can see some of the tests in the picture of my entryway before I painted it. My dining room currently has several “tests” on 3 walls. I didn’t like any of them so I decided to up for a while and come back to it at a later date. And the walls are still motley with all the paint samples. It’s embarrassing, but we don’t have company anyway.

I'm pretty relaxed about furniture- some came from my Ex's family and his Mom died in 1982. If it looks good and isn't falling apart I keep it around. I'm more into work on the actual structure of the house. As soon as DH and I moved in we enclosed the screened-in back porch even though it cost WAY more than expected and it became our favorite room in the house. My grandchildren love it, too. Last time they were here the 2-year old wanted to be let out there a lot. I think he liked the peace and quiet! We could see him from the kitchen, the windows are all tempered glass and he can't wander anywhere.
Most recently- I had quartz countertops put in the kitchen in 2020 and had the exterior painted and had the lower deck replaced with TRX this year. And... today I signed a contract to have 4 windows replaced. I've been doing that over a period of years- the first priority after we moved in were the ones with condensation between the panes. The house is 25 years old so I'm gradually replacing the others- it's an expensive proposition and I want to cash-flow the work.
Now that I know about Imgur maybe I'll post pictures but right now it's dark out so any picture of the porch wouldn't do it justice.

Now that U know about Imgur maybe I'll post pictures but right now it's dark out so any picture of the porch wouldn't do it justice. You and several other posters have done way more to your houses than I ever have. Mostly because of lack of funds. So I just try to work with what I have. But I did have plans to eventually do some more costly stuff to my other house before I met Mister. I’d just started with smaller, less expensive projects that would give me a lot of bang for my buck as far as making it look nice. Well, I did do some more important stuff first, there was a method to my madness. I started with replacing things attached to the structure that improved what I called “the way my house functioned”. Like replacing the OTR microwave that no longer worked after my kids set my stove on fire a few years prior, with a proper range hood, replacing the vent in one bathroom with a quieter one that also had a light, replacing the lights on my porches with nicer looking ones that came on and turned off automatically, things like that. Then I started working on things that were fun and wouldn’t have to be redone when I finally got around to the big stuff like replacing floors and countertops. Here, the only costly things I’d like to change is the stupid deck, either tear it down and rebuild it, or use the patio underneath that is the same size, to make a nice outdoor space, and I’d like another seating area out in the backyard. If we forego having a deck, and use the patio underneath, I’d like to explore at least having it covered and screened in. I’d really love a sunroom though. I’d also like a bathtub and larger (separate) shower in our bathroom. I’m not keen on tearing down exterior walls unless I really had to, so I’d prefer if we took that space from the hall bathroom, which shares a wall. The hall bathroom is ideal for a family with children. It has a long vanity with double sinks, just like in our bathroom. The bathtub/shower is behind another door, with the toilet. So, 2 kids could be washing their face and brushing their teeth with plenty of room so they aren’t bumping elbows, while a third is taking a bath or shower behind another closed door within the bathroom, for privacy. If this is our forever home, since we won’t be having anymore children, I’d rather use some of that large space to make our bathroom what I’d like. And there’s some flooring I’d like to change, but that’s not as big of a project as the other stuff. Oh, and we really need to do something about our windows. Every last one of them has noticeable drafts. I’m going to stop now, before I think of more stuff lol. Please do post pictures! I’d love to see them.

This was in our entryway until I replaced it with the painting that I love for that space. This afternoon I hung it in the guest bathroom to see if I like it better than the painting I had in there. I was standing in the laundry room when I took that picture. I do like it better than the painting, but I feel like it might be just a little too big for that spot. I have several pieces of wall art that I’m trying to find homes for. If I can’t find a good spot (home) in my house for a piece, I’m going to just give it away.

I talked to a coworker today that just finished replacing all the flooring in her house. Idk how big they were, but she said she only paid $400 for labor to replace the floors in her kitchen and laundry room, which are the rooms I want to replace the flooring in, ASAP. They are both small spaces, but I’d convinced myself that the labor would be at least a couple grand. Idk why. None of my close family members have ever replaced flooring, and somehow, it got into my head that it must cost *millions* of dollars.

I had this in my condo. the shower stall wasn't oversized, though. it was great. I have an album of the listing pics from when I sold, over on FB. that bathroom was sunny yellow upper with white tile and beadboard paneling under a chair rail. I miss that bathroom. and the sunrises I could see from my adjoining bedroom. sigh. I definitely do NOT miss Mr Congeniality, though!
I'm going to have some pics to post soon. the painter just finished my master bedroom yesterday. today, he came back to replace switchplates and help me move the furniture back where it belongs. I'm so happy to sleep in MY bed again, I need to find something else for the guest room. but re:pics, I've been posting on FB as stuff has been getting done. I can totally post here as well.

It looks good where it is to me. I have things to do around here, had the day off and everything then didn't do shit. Only thing I did do was wander around Lowe's after dropping dropping off lightbulbs and rechargable batteries for recycling. Then wandered around Target and buy 2 bags of sweet potato chips. Guess I should B&N soon for the triplets' books. Have to order online. They don't carry dual Chinese/English ones here.

Can I see some Christmas decorations? I haven’t had Mister bring the decorations down from the attic, and I have not bought a tree. I’m really blah about Christmas this year. If we don’t go get a tree Monday, I’ll just put his artificial tree up. Last year, I wanted to really decorate our fireplace mantle, but I didn’t know what to do. This year, I want to at least put some poinsettias somewhere, if I get around to decorating at all. So far all I’ve done is put stockings on it and an elf on the shelf the last 2 years. If you all share some pics, it might help motivate me. Here’s my boring fireplace and mantle…..

Pink - be careful with poinsettias as I think they are poisonous to cats/dogs. If you're not feeling the Christmas vibe, maybe consider more of a wintery theme so you can leave it up longer. Evergreen, some birch logs, some icy blue items. We get out poster tack and put Christmas cards we've received on the edge of our mantle. It's nice to see them while we have dinner. I decided a long time ago that I prefer minimalist holiday decorations and lean towards more seasonal if I'm going to put up anything. Just don't have time in this life stage to put up a bunch of stuff and then take it down in a month. But, that's me.

I should not answer my door to people I don't know.
The week before last, I did. Nice young man from a local home improvement company, in business 31 years, founded by 2 military veterans, yadda, yada.. he asked if I had any home improvement projects planned. I mentioned I was looking at replacing 4 windows. Before I knew it I had an appointment for the next day.
So... that appointment was VERY well-choreographed. Another nice young man, asked about other work I'd had done (quartz countertops, some windows already replaced, deck rebuilt) - aimed at seeing how much money I could throw around, I suspect. Gave me the sales pitch on the company. Windows made here in MO, which is really important to me. Showed me some "average" numbers for the work I wanted done, probably to see how badly I reacted. It was the last day of the month, so... if I agreed now I'd get the Special Snowflake discounts that took about $4,000 off the bottom line. He offered me another 2% off if I allowed them to keep their sign on my lawn for a month but I turned that down- not sure if the HOA allowed it anyway.
Deposit paid (only 10%) and the work won't begin for a few months. I'm OK with the company but wow, what a sales job. I had a similar experience with Pella, though. I think they all operate that way.

I have never lived anywhere where Pella sends people door to door.
The two times I have had Pella windows installed, I initiated the contact. Yes, the salesman are good at selling. I wanted someone to arrange installation, etc. and was willing to pay for it. I knew what I wanted. Yes, they tried to upsell me, but I knew what I wanted and that is what I got.
I did draw the line when the salesman asked if I would leave a google review because he got $50 for every one left. If you have to ask me to leave you a review, I'm not going to do it and I don't care about your $50.

If you have to ask me to leave you a review, I'm not going to do it and I don't care about your $50. I've used Pella before- this was another firm. I agree on the reviews. The Pella rep told me the same thing and I didn't leave a review. I also had the guys that delivered my new range ask me to post a review and note that if they got anything less than the top rating they got penalized. Costco did not manage my expectations well and it turned out that all they could do was put it in the garage because the power connection to the old one was hard-wired and they didn't have the expertise to mess with high-voltage wires (and were not required to). I didn't want to give then a bad review- they did what they were supposed to do- so I didn't post anything.

I'm interested in replacing windows just a few at a time. Need to look at that.
Pink - I think your mantel looks great!
I put up more holiday decorations than ever before. On my very small porch I have: Pinecone and lights in lanterns, lighted a wooden sled, a lighted bird house (not sure that's christmas-y but I have looked for a wreath to hang on it, and some solar lights. It's a little cramped.
I have a windowed French door that is hung horizontally in my living room for pictures that we put Christmas cards on. This year I added a wreath, garland and lights. And lit an outside tree. Dh is wondering who I am and when his wife will return and honestly so am I.
But our house is seriously a work in progress. Our couch desperately needs a new couch cover and dh's fishtank is still sitting empty. Plus stuff everywhere. Not to.mention my plants that didn't get planted that I'm trying to winter over inside. I should get some nicer pots at least.

I like the wintry theme idea. I’ll probably go for that next year. Icy blue will fit my color scheme too. Thanks for that idea! I’m going to have to put a tree up though, since I told my Grandbabies they can have Christmas here. I’ll probably just use Mister’s. There’s no point in spending the money on a live tree if I’m not really in the spirit. I’m with you on not constantly changing things every month. Thanks for the heads up on poinsettias and the dogs. If I ever get any, I’ll be sure to only put them where the dogs can’t get to them, because I do believe Newbie nibbles on plants, I just haven’t caught her in the act yet. A couple days ago Mister said he was almost sure he saw her nibbling on the rose bush on the deck. Surely that wasn’t fun. But this is the same dog that tries to pick wasps up with her mouth.

That means I have to think! OK, we're going out of town so give me a couple of days. I have a great Christmas tree picture for your festive enjoyment

Your decorations sound lovely. I think for most people, our homes are pretty much always a work in progress. There’s almost always something that needs to be done or we’d like to change. So don’t feel bad about that.
