If the furnace doesn't exist in the closet then the thickness of this wall would be reduced to about an inch past that electrical outlet. That is a lot of space to add to the hallway/entry way. This was taken sitting in my desk chair in the dining area and swiveled around to look towards the front of the house. BTW: I did tell the furnace people today that I want the furnace moved to the garage. It will probably be some time before I will be able to make the other modifications but at least the furnace part would be done. They want the cement contractors to come out and look at the garage before everything is finalized but the ground work has been laid to move the furnace.
I think (since I’m spending your money and not mine lol) that it’s good to go on and move the furnace while it has to be dealt with anyway. Then, you can do the other stuff as you have the time and money.

Designer called today. The tile I selected for the floor of the shower is no longer being produced so another tile had to be selected. That was easy. The gorgeous tiles I selected for the wall of the shower has increased in price. The tile by itself would cost more than half of my budget and that is before anything else. Designer had found a similar tile made out of a different material. Of course, I picked the most expensive one. I approved the changes so hopefully we get an estimate very soon. I hope you’ll share pictures after it’s all done.

I don't even have an estimate so no contract. Nothing has even been ordered. I think it will be some time before this happens. I said I didn't care if it was fall and it may be fall.

The lumber for the remodel has been delivered and I picked out flooring and vinyl siding today. The contractor said they will begin framing next week. Yay! Progress!

We are redoing our family room. We found there was water coming in along the back and so the entire room had to be torn down, a new foundation poured and it will be rebuilt beginning next week. It was an addition that was added about 5 years after the house was built. We think it was done by the homeowner as it doesn’t appear to have any permits pulled and it wasn’t to code either.

Yesterday the contractor framed up the room and added sheathing. It’s starting to look like a room again.

Thought I would come back and let everyone know that I was basically shot down on my grand plan to move the furnace to the garage and make the fireplace foot print smaller. My furnace died for good on Monday so I have been heating with the gas fireplace. The sales guy and the installation guru came out today to look about moving it to the garage. I was pretty sure I had talked it over with this guy about the reasons for moving the furnace to the garage but maybe it was the other company. Anyway it basically came down to the fact that it cost about $30,000 on top of the cost of moving the furnace to accomplish what I want. I won't bore everyone with all the details that I barely understand but basically I wasn't going to spend that kind of money so why spend the extra money to move the furnace. Down the road I will probably get a better gas fireplace that looks nicer it will just still be off centered.

Contractor called yesterday. He will put the official bid in the mail tomorrow. From what he said, the entire cost will be more than my budget. Substantially more because everything costs more for material.
He told me again that he normally doesn't take on small jobs but after his mother fell in the shower trying to get her leg over the bathtub and broke her hip, he never turns down jobs like this and they don't take much of his time. He feels like he is paying it back.
I asked about paying him. He said he doesn't take any kind of down payment because lots of people have backed out because of supply chain issues with materials. He doesn't pay for materials until they come in so there is no money out of his pocket.
So my money can continue to earn it's pitiful interest for a bit longer.
He did say the only delay he foresees is possibly the counter top. I have no problem with that being delayed. It's the shower I don't want started until everything is here and I want it done ASAP. So we understand each other.

So we understand each other. I'm having troubles even getting a contractor for doing some of the projects around my home. The heating guy yesterday gave me a name of a guy but I can't find him in the contractor board database so will probably pass. My Dad was in the trades so I always check on the contractors board to see if they are licensed/bonded etc.

My dad is in rural Ohio. He's had a horrible time finding contractors.
He finally has a contract and a down-payment put down for the new roof.
The main bathroom has needed gutted for about 5 years. My dad tried but it was beyond his skills. He can't find anyone to do the job.
He's asked my cousin in the past. Cousin is contractor, does very good work, high quality. I'm not sure what happened but he's finally going to come do it.
They live far enough away that my dad is going to pay for a hotel room for them.
I mean I guess it is a fairly small job but to me gutting an entire room, dealing with plumbing and electric isn't a tiny job. If they aren't all doing new construction, then what exactly are these bigger jobs?

Contractors regard bigger jobs as bathroom(s) plus kitchen, plus adding a porch or another room, replacing windows and refinishing the floors while they're in there.

The contractor I am using is the one the designer company uses. I have checked and he is licensed and bonded. He subcontracts the tile work to a guy that only does tile work. They work together on all tile projects. He is also licensed and bonded.
The tile guy also had a situation where his dad had difficulty getting out of a bathtub shower after back surgery, so these two much younger men understand the situation.
I'm sure they would have liked for me to be replacing the ceramic tile on the bathroom and kitchen floors but I am not.
The designer showed me some of the new popular designs and they are for bathrooms with much more room than I have. Plus I am not spending $6000 for a soaking tub that I would have to make space for in a bedroom. In my situation, I don't want a soaking tub.
My house is a modest 3 bedroom house by today's standards. No double vanity. There is room so I was going to put one in but both the designer and contractor said why should I spend the money for that when I have no need for it.
If I wasn't going through this wholesale company, I think most contractors would not have called me back.
My niece's husband recommended the wholesale company since he knew they would put me in touch with a general contractor.
Even in my neighborhood, I'm seeing much larger projects. In ground swimming pools, huge decks, etc. A lot of contractors want to do a gut job of both kitchen and bath at a minimum.
I feel grateful that this contractor understands the "elderly" have needs for safety.

I’ll share pictures too, if someone tells me how…… and explains how to do it…….. like you would explain to, maybe a 5yo? This video shows how to load pictures into Imgur and then post them to a forum. Its the process that I normally use. happyhoix and cooper88 this video made it easy for me to learn to post pictures. I don’t know how to repost it in the other thread though lol.

Received the quote today. Talked to the contractor. Told him I had signed it and was mailing it in the morning. He was going to call the designer and tell her to order everything.
He's hoping to start the first week of April. That was shocking but I would like it done sooner rather than later.
The bid was not as high as I feared but it was over my original budget.

Things I've done at this home that I'd want to repeat in a future home: have a professional designer and landscaper look at the lawn and draw up a plan; replace the dining room and other overhead light fixtures with really nice ones; put in new window dressings with an eye on beauty and convenience; repaint the whole house; bite the bullet and redo decorative features like the portico when they begin to fall apart; live in every room in the house rather than let any default to storage, and update bathroom fixtures sooner.

Meant to post yesterday but this thread was buried a bit, so I forgot. Contractor came and caulked the basement stair gaps, he stripped the front door, cut a cat door into the basement workroom cheap hallow panel door (DD9 is going to "sew" a curtain to hang in front of it).
Today, he finished hanging up the barn door across the hallway that leads to our 3 bedrooms from the open kitchen/dining area. Hoping this will stop the noise from the first person up each morning reaching everyone else as we don't leave the doors closed because then the cats whine in/out of them. It's an open hallway so there's never been a door there and there is no trim around the opening, so he's having to customize the install a bit. So far, so good. He also got the first coat of a lovely orange paint on the double front doors. I'm pleased with the shade and so excited to start referring to my house as the one with the orange door LOL. We won't talk about how I partially stripped the door of its peeling stain in summer 2020 and then never finished Also on his list are hanging 3 recessed medicine cabinets in our bathrooms. This will give the girls so much storage and I can finally stop keeping all our OTC meds in a basket in my master closet LOL. No idea how the prior owners lived with only mirrors for so long as it's driven me crazy even since we moved in. He's hanging a large 4 foot by 6 foot mirror in the downstairs bathroom that I got for free off craigslist. Picture DD13 and her friends getting ready for school dances down there as it's a huge bathroom and now will have the best dress up mirror! He's also going to paint the basement steps. We pulled up the carpet that matched the carpet throughout the basement that we replaced with luxury vinyl. We had grand plans of staining the unfinished wood ourselves until DH got to the top 3 steps which are a random shade of navy blue. I still remember the day DH yelled WTH. We found a nice gray toned blue for the steps and a darker gray teal/blue for the risers. Being a little daring with color. The new floors have a gray blue tint to some of the wood grain. I got too busy and exhausted from work that I procrastinated finding cabinets for the entryway area that I wanted. I also got frustrated that I couldn't find anything that went floor to ceiling in a set of 4 (so many are 3 which is weird because I'd think 4 is more common family size). The girls are calling them lockers and making name signs for each of them. Sure hope they their crap in them instead of on the floor. I'm so excited to have everything all closed up. Stuck with white solid panels to keep them easy to clean and touch up if they're knicked. Wood finishes raised the price by a third or more. Also bought upper and lower cabinets for the bar area that has old lower cabinets from the prior kitchen set and no uppers. Also in white so they will match. He's going to add our crown molding with them to make them look built in. They'll be delivered in 14 days and then we'll get back on his calendar but he's holding a spot for us in two weeks. So exciting for all these changes! And $$$$ but I'm super happy with the contractor and his bid.

azucena Those changes sound great. Your house will really be much more functional for your entire family. It sounds like they are all things you've wanted/planned for a while. I think it's great that you are doing the improvements now rather than waiting. So many times I've known people who put off for years things they really wanted in their homes. Then they did the upgrades and touchups just so they could sell. It makes so much more sense to make improvements for yourself now rather than for new owners later.

My aunt was in her house in TN for 9 years. They definitely made changes over their time. However, they made more changes in the last six months in preparation for selling that my aunt wishes she'd done sooner. One of the big ones was replacing lights.
The changes all sound like they'll improve your enjoyment azucena. I'm glad you went through with them.

It's nice to see my hard work turn into bonus $ and then go into projects that I've wanted to do for a couple of years. My family is teasing me about how ridiculously happy I am over my new orange door. I'm returning the favor by telling DD13 that next year she can tell her new hs friends her address and say look for the house with the orange door The stairs aren't quite done but look great. I made the right choice to go with the lighter color on the steps because it flows nicely into the floor. Then, DD9 must have missed the conversation about the two colors as she went down this morning to get laundry and saw the darker coming up and was like whoa, cool! So a fun little pop of color like I was picturing. Menards just texted that our cabinets are in. I'm betting they had most of it in stock and only had to order a few pieces. Need to confer with contractor about scheduling but could have it installed much sooner than I thought!

My handyman has been mostly Mia and I'm over using the tub as a sink.
He had covid while we were waiting for the floor to come in and has had a rough recovery. He finally came Monday because the hot water valve was leaking, but he just fixed that.
It is what it is, but it also sucks. We have a lamp in there because the light isnt put in yet, no sink, and all of his tools. It's very cramped.
