Liberty University threatened to punish students who reported being raped with conduct violations: reportLiberty University threatened to punish students who came forward with reports of being raped for violating the school’s code of conduct, according to a new report published Monday by ProPublica. ProPublica spoke to more than 50 former students and staffers at Liberty University and reviewed records from more than a dozen cases, which accused the school of discouraging and dismissing students who came forward with allegations of rape, reporting that in some cases they said they were threatened with punishment for breaking the school’s moral code, known as the Liberty Way. Three students who spoke to ProPublica said they were asked to sign forms upon reporting their rape incidents recognizing that they could be penalized for breaking the school’s ethics code. Potential infractions at the evangelical university included underage drinking and premarital sex. Two former students told the news outlet that they were penalized after reporting their assaults: one said she was fined $500 for alcohol consumption and was ordered to attend counseling. She said she was required to pay the fine or else she would not receive her transcript. Other students who said they were raped and spoke with the news outlet said they were advised to not report their incident, and some students claimed that university police officers dissuaded them from filing charges. A number of students told ProPublica that they spoke to staff members about their assaults but the university faculty ultimately remained silent, despite being legally required to report the conversations to the Title IX office. Additionally, when some students attempted to report being raped, they were not told they had the option of going to the police with their claims, which is reportedly required by the Clery Act. From the Wikipedia: It's important to instill in young Evangelical men that it's OK to do what they want to women (and children and probably anyone who's in a lower social class than they are) - especially when they can blame the victim. Isn't that an acceptable thing to teach to students in a private Evangelical University "the victim wanted it" OR "those lower Socioeconomic people LIKE being treated as lower Socioeconomic people. They LIKE it. They EXPECT it. We're not doing anything wrong."

My GF back in ‘74 referred to the embryo she had from being raped as “the monster” and gladly aborted it. More difficult to do that in our increasingly Gilead environment.

With Falwell in charge is this any surprise? Even operating under the assumption that the vast majority of those whose public face is based on their religion (and virtually all of those who are attempting to either monetize their religion or trade on it for political influence) are faking their religion, the entire Falwell family is on the sleazier end of that spectrum. There is nothing Christian about them. Never has been.

Liberty University Sues Ex-President Jerry Falwell, Jr., Seeking Millions In DamagesLiberty University is suing former president Jerry Falwell Jr. for millions of dollars, accusing him of withholding damaging personal information from school officials while negotiating a lucrative employment agreement for himself, among other allegations. The civil suit was filed Thursday in the Lynchburg Circuit Court in Virginia, and alleges breach of contract and fiduciary duty as well as statutory conspiracy. It is seeking $10 million in compensatory damages, which could potentially be tripled under state law, in addition to punitive damages and the return of phones, computers and other property belonging to the school. In a 74-page complaint, Liberty offered three motivations behind the lawsuit: to recover university property, redress breaches of various fiduciary duties during Falwell's tenure and recover damages for violations of Virginia's conspiracy statute. It is the latest chapter in a scandal-fueled saga that saw Falwell resign from his post last August over allegations of sexual behavior that violated the school's honor code. Falwell, 58, had taken an indefinite leave of absence after facing widespread criticism for posting, then deleting, a racy photo on Instagram. Reports then emerged that a family friend — since identified as Giancarlo Granda — had an affair with Falwell's wife Becki and for years extorted the family for money. Lawyers wrote in the complaint that many of their allegations were backed up by statements Falwell made to the Washington Examiner in August and in the short-lived defamation suit he filed against the university in October. In 2012, according to those statements, Becki Falwell and Granda — then a 20-year-old hotel employee in Miami — began an affair that Falwell knew about and which lasted on-and-off for two years. When Becki Falwell broke things off, Granda reportedly threatened to use their conduct to embarrass both the Falwells and the university, with the complaint noting that "there is little doubt" he maintains "a cache of material harmful to the Falwells" such as intimate photographs and recorded communications. This is in no way surprising at all to those of us who were raised in the evangelical church. This is exactly how we were taught the system works.
