There are lots of ways produce can be contaminated - from the ground water to how the field was prepared for growing to the workers picking and processing the produce to the machines processing the produce.
I'm not sure there's a solution for this kind of a problem. (OK, maybe my mom's "cook everything until it is gray or "tough and dried out" solves the problem.)
I'm kind of surprised it doesn't happen more often (or maybe it's happens a lot - and some bacteria is less "make people sick" than others.)
I will admit this outbreak seems pretty serious - lots of big numbers being reported... which means it effected a really lot of people -- since not everyone who gets sick gets sick enough to the warrant being checked for salmonella . When the CDC has such high numbers it's pretty bad.

I can't believe I am saying this, but I hope that is what I have and not an ulcer. The pains were horrible on Monday, but almost completely gone now.
