I would think retirees would be happy about the increase. For years we have been hearing about how awful the increase in SS has been and how low interest rates were tough on those on fixed incomes. We even gave SS recipients increases when there shouldn't have been. Now you are complaining about getting a 5.9% increase. Seems like senior citizens aren't happy with any outcome.

I didn't read VB's post as complaining about the increase. Maybe I'm missing something?
I do expect Medicare to increase as much so that it's a net zero gain. Medicare has to increase. Payments are too low to begin with.

I am beyond enthusiastic over this increase. I stated I thought the inflation rate has been described as low, so I was shocked at the amount of the increase this year. Current Inflation rate(s) has not been shown as being at this high of a percentage number to my knowledge. S.S. increases usually tend to lag actual inflation rates currently going through the economy and takes another year to catch up. I have not seen our monthly MEDICARE deduction at this point. In past years it usually matches the social security increase or comes very close.

Are they saying it is low? The fed has it pegged at 4-point-something and rising. I guess that is "low" compared to the Jimmy Carter era, but seems significantly higher than the last 10 years or so. I don't think we have broken 2.5 - have we?

Yes and there were articles in the 2 to 4% range too. the supplemental policy you pick has to factored in also. Everyone needs the supplemental policy to go with medicare, or the out of pocket expense gets you bigtime. I believe many medications allowed by Medicare have also increased quite a bit. Somethimes you do not know what the new cost is until you need it the first time in the new yearly policy. Yes, you can spend an hour or so on the phone finding out new costs, but majority of people do not do this. Then there is the donut hole with higher prices put you in the hole earlier than previous years.......My wife hits the hole around June 1st

I've read that the Medicare increase is 6%...so not a big hit. However, my part D is going up and along with that, the portion of my scripts that I have to pay will also increase...so it will likely be a "wash" when all the numbers are in. Some folks have said that their part D was doubling...so many will be looking for new plans for sure.

AND....open enrollment started today...unitl Dec.7. For those who need help deciding on a supplement or part D, go to Medicare.gov to find info. There is one place there that you should be able to enter your drugs to find out which part D plans will cover them all for you. This is where the free counselors find the info they present to you & likely where those that charge fees also find the info. Your Medicare & You book for 2022 should also have a list of places you can find help...like senior centers in your area or other things like that.

Even you should be able to figure out why the increase is higher this year. It is figured on the year over year increase for the July-September period. Last year's was artificially decreased because of the pandemic closings. This year makes up for that. Are you just trolling again, or are you really just not very bright?

Last year's was artificially decreased because of the pandemic closings. This year makes up for that. Are you just trolling again, or are you really just not very bright? On the contrary, there was basically no inflation before the pandemic set in or the previous year. The government economists were worried we were in a deflationionary economy. The Fed also stated their worries were about deflation and were trying to create some inflation in our economy. Without success, until the government poured trillions into citizen's pocketbooks. Since the july September period was used, please show any statistic that inflation was running at 5.9% annually during that period. The Fed was saying it was transitory. The President said it was transitory.

it might be transitory. and it could last a while.
we had a decade or so of CPI being around 2%.
this might be regression to the mean.

All issues real, imagined, or just plain invented will be laid at the feet of Biden.
I just saw Tucker blaming the fiscal 2020 Trump/Repo-Con deficit on Joe. I’m sure it was sucked up by all the FAUX heads that don’t realize he fake newsed them all. They will now be ranting about that the idiots.

for the record, the portion of the deficit that was attributable to money that was ACTUALLY SPENT during his presidency. during Obama's first year, that number was between 15 and 20%. I doubt it will be that much this time, because there was less emergency spending.

Now have to see what the increase in Medicare insurance is. Does it wipe out the gain?
I remember the year SS didn't get an increase, but Medicare did by $41 per month.
So for SS recipients it was a net LOSS of $41 per month.
It was one of the Obama years but have forgotten which one.
Politics as usual

There is a "hold harmless" provision that will prevent most people from having their net benefit go lower the next year because of increased Medicare costs. It as also false that Medicare monthly premiums ever increased by $41 in one year unless you were paying IRMAA costs. Being subject to IRMAA would also make the hold harmless provision not apply. Either way, to suggest that the average person was ever harmed to that degree is flat-out wrong and irresponsible.

Just funny that we have a thread about the increase in SS as being bad after all the complaints about the anemic increases in the past

You are also including Part D which is voluntary, but was never $50 in any year for the basic benefit. Additionally, the footnotes show that 73% of Part B enrollees continued to pay the same 2009 premium in 2010 because of the hold harmless provision.

I'm somewhat fortunate: My Medicare will go up, but I have no Supplement or Part D. The VA covers those 2nd to and happy about that. The only time I have to pay the cost of a pharmacy RX is when it it required for something local. All RX otherwise are no cost to me .
