Hugging Sea Horse Book Is Too Racy For Schools, Tennessee Moms Group SaysA children’s book with an illustration of hugging sea horses is too hot to handle for kids and should be banned from elementary schools in Williamson County, Tennessee, a chapter of the conservative group Moms for Liberty insists. “Sea Horse: The Shyest Fish in the Sea” includes such steamy passages as: “They twist their tails together and twirl gently around, changing color until they match. ... The two of them dance until sunset and then she puts her eggs into his pouch.” Moms for Liberty also wants public schools in the county, just outside of Nashville, to ditch a tale about Johnny Appleseed because it’s “dark,” and is opposed to a book about hurricanes because “first grade is too young to hear about possible devastating effects of hurricanes.” A book about Martin Luther King Jr. is too divisive, the moms complained in an 11-page letter earlier this year to the state’s Board of Education, Reuters reported. The head of the local chapter has no children in public schools. Complete article here: link

Oh to have a life so uncomplicated that hugging seahorses is what drives me into moral outrage.

What kinda perverts ARE you people out there??! Some people have too much time on their hands. And also, they need to grow the F up. Kids that age aren't even going to think anything 'dirty' to begin with.

Kids that age aren't even going to think anything 'dirty' to begin with. And....it's only "dirty" if the adults make it 'dirty'! The kids do understand more than most adults give them credit for, they just don't discuss it with adults. As a kid, most of us kids used to discuss all kinds of things that adults would have been shocked to know we talked about. The big "thing" when I was in grade school was "God's Little Acre"...I read it, big freakin' deal!

I know some librarians at our little rural conservative town and they constantly get religious people in there outraged that our library carries the Harry Potter books. Makes all the kids want to be witches.
Apparently the library should only have non fiction books, like Little House on the Prairie. Little did they know those books are a little a little bit fiction, too.

Happy Banned Books Week! We like to create displays promoting banned/challenged books - our current favorite is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin.

The Maurice Sendak book In the Night Kitchen caused a fuss because it showed a little dough covered boy falling into a bottle of milk, which caused the dough to melt off, showing he was indeed a little boy.
People were using a magic marker to draw shorts on the boy.
I got it for my son when he was around three. If he was scandalized to find out boys have a penis, he didn’t say.

Did you know that just about half of all people that have ever walked the earth had a penis? With all the fuss i just assumed it was a much rarer thing, but I did my own research, and having a penis is quite common!

Saw this article today. Banned Books Week: We defend 30 challenged books including 'Beloved' and '1984'As journalists, it's our job to seek out the truth even when it's uncomfortable. We value diverse perspectives, are open to new ideas and respect intellectual freedom. So it should come as no surprise that the thought of banning a book would make us riled. That's why for this year's Banned Books Week, USA TODAY staffers are defending some of the most challenged books in America as compiled by the American Library Association's Office of Intellectual Freedom. Why are these titles challenged or banned? For a variety of reasons, including offensive language, being sexually explicit, having violence, promoting LGBTQ perspectives and expressing alternative views. What happens when a book is challenged in school boards and public libraries? Titles can be removed from school curriculum or library shelves. Most public schools and libraries have boards comprised of elected officials or members appointed by elected officials. It is by the power of these officials, that a book can go from challenged to banned in a particular school district or public library. Even if it happens only once, it is one time too many. I will say that a school district deciding not to include the book in their teachings is different from a national government making it illegal to possess the book under any circumstance.
I'm sure there are books out there that I think could be harmful and I am glad my elementary school is not using them. I am sure there is a way to read a book promoting white supremacy in order to discourage white supremacy- but that seems like an advanced concept and it is pretty clear that the vast majority of Americans aren't able to clear that intellectual hurdle. I am glad the books are available for those who want to dive in, but I am not sure they should be promoted as summer reading for everyone.

I am okay with A Separate Peace being on there, would have made high school a hell of a lot less boring. My question is why can't they do HS freshman a favor and put The Scarlett Letter on there? Even Hawthorne himself is documented saying he hated that book.
