Borrowed from news article on Reddit. I have a lot of them but will share one.
We had an old inboard boat. We were out in the middle of the lake heading in from water skiing. The boat was slow. One of us said the smell of gasoline was too strong. The gas line had come loose and was spewing gas into the engine compartment. H. fixed it. The ride in was scary with the gas in the engine compartment.

I've been through a few things, but the worst was probably finding out I'd almost bled to death internally, while waiting to get emergency surgery. The pain was awful, but it was my first experience receiving morphine. (The pain relief of that stuff is just unbelievable!)

I've had quite a few over my life time... Nearly bleeding to death when I hemorrhaged after giving birth to my son...had ripped out all my stiches, but didn't know that. Being on a 20' cabin boat when the motor quit, in the middle of a lake with only 1 tiny paddle & 1 normal paddle & strong winds cause a storm was brewing. Thank goodness a little aluminum john boat saw we were in trouble & towed us to shore. Getting robbed at gun point when I was the night cashier in a grocery store. Having an auto accident & seeing it coming, but I had no place to go...she ran a red light & hit me in the passenger door. Having to suggest Hospice to my first hubby cause I could no longer handle it all by myself & I was still working a 40 hr. week cause we needed the money to survive.

Hit by a car while crossing the street in front of my home when I was about five years old.scared at the time though I remember little of it today. Concussion and fractured hip.
Another time I hade the day off before a trip to Cairo, Egypt and leaving that evening. I spent day out drinking with my boss. My flight into JFK was late and I missed my flight to Cairo via Paris.
Instead I was put on a flight at JFK with stops in Paris, Rome, Athens and then Cairo. Overnight flight and hungover as hell. While off loading and loading passengers I was napping. But I suddenly stirred and out of my half awake eyes, thought I saw a woman carrying a rifle into the main cabin.
This was during the time (1970s) when a number of passenger aircraft were being hijacked by Middle Easterners.
I momentarily freaked out until my vision got better and saw she wasn't carrying a rifle in her arms but an umbrella.
Finally made it to Cairo.

My mother getting hit by a car in Boston at Quincy Market after dinner when she took me and my sister to The Nutcracker. First ride in a police car. And so far, the only one. I still remember all the feathers from her down coat. She was PISSED about losing that coat.

Being in my house when it was hit by a tornado, hiding in the garage (which is under the house) hearing the snapping of all the tree trunks of the trees in our wooded lot followed by the heavy thump of them hitting the ground- and some of them striking the house.
Worst part of it was coming outside and seeing two of my neighbors houses completely gone down to the foundation, and realizing I would need to go help try to search for survivors because I knew FA/CPR and that would be the best chance they had until emergency services were able to clear a road into our subdivision. Then intense relief when one of the families emerged from their under the house garage ok, and the other family was contacted by phone at a restaurant miles away, eating dinner. Horror followed by joy.

A dark street where my cousin had stalled the stick shift car she’d bought but could barely drive. I knew how to drive a stick, she was practicing and we were stuck in the middle of the street. Her little boy and my little brother were in the backseat. A car full of young men came from the opposite direction, went past us, then stopped behind us. One got out and walked to the driver’s side of our car, with one hand inside his jacket. Not in a jacket pocket, hidden under the opposite side of the opening to his jacket. Another one was walking toward our car, his hand was inside his jacket too. He stopped at the rear of the car. My cousin still couldn’t get her shit together and pull off.
Another car came toward us from the opposite direction and wouldn’t go around us, just sat there in front of my cousin’s car with their headlights shining on us. The guy at my cousin’s window kept looking over at the other car, waiting for them to leave. They stayed. He finally kinda snarled to my cousin “y’all aight?”. Cousin said yes. He paused again, then they walked back to their car. The second car was still just sitting there. And FINALLY my cousin was able to pull off.
I knew with everything in me that they meant to harm us. I was terrified. Whoever was in that second car saved us, by not going around us and going on about their business. I’ve always said they were angels.

My H. slept through two different tornadoes in two different states about 7 years apart. Both in mobile homes.
I was at our trailer house cabin in the mountains with my brother when 3 of his buddies showed up. They wanted to know where the furniture they bought for the place went. Not too happy because I had no idea my brother had switched the new furniture for the old junk so we wouldn't be comfortable. I started to the toilet in the back and one of the younger thugs came behind me. Gun in hand. I glanced over my shoulder when his Dad shoved him into a bedroom.
There was some discussion on who owned the place. Those 3 were planning on partying there for the weekend when we spoiled their plans.

I was stationed aboard a small wooden minesweeper cruising up the coast of California. I had just awoken and was still in my midships bunk when the collision alarm sounded. Fortunately there was no impact. We were in heavy fog and a huge commercial freighter was headed out towards Asia. The officer in charge saw it at the last second and got the ship turned out of its path or it would have split us right about at my bunk.

I don't recall it being frightening but certainly the most bizarre and disgusting incident.
Back in the early 70s, I went to visit my sister who lived in a southwest commune. A friend of my sister often visited the commune but did not live there. He rented a room in a house up in the mountains near the commute.
The friend asked my sister and I if we would like to spend the weekend up at the mountain home. We said sure. The friend lived in the house with a woman and her two adopted sons: one sixteen years old and the other about eleven.
So we drove up to the home and had dinner with the family. My sister and I slept on the floor in her friend's room.
Around 11:30 or so at night we heard some screaming and shouting coming from one of the bedrooms. The three of us got up and then into the hallway. The commotion was coming from the mother's room.
We opened the mother's bedroom door and found the mother and her older son naked atop her bed. The mother had jammed her son's head into her crotch trying to get him to perform oral sex on her. The son was trying to pull away but the mother had him by his head hair and was pulling chunks of it out.
We told the mother to let him go and to put on some clothes. The son and us three left the mom's room and closed the door. We spoke to the son and he told us the sex had been going on for a while. The mom forced the son by telling him she would tell her ex-husband, a lawyer, the son had been raping her.
The son complied out of fear of being charged with rape which would leave his younger brother alone with the woman.
I don't know what happened after that and did not want to know. My sister and I left early the next morning before the mother got up. I never did ask my sister if she knew the outcome. I doubt the mother continued her inexcusable behavior at least while my sister's friend still rented a room from the woman.

My total fear came in the aftermath of DH#1 sudden death.
I came home from work and found him on the kitchen floor. He had died several hours earlier of sudden heart attack. It took a lot of time for the pain/panic/fear to subside.

sesfw I have a older girlfriend who woke up to her H. in the bathroom.
My cousin came home from work to find her H. still in bed. The pain relievers for his back masked a heart attack.
These griefs need professionals help.

When I was five, I came down with a mild case of chicken pox. We were living in East Africa. My brother was two and a half.
One morning after I had started getting better and it had become obvious that I'd infected my brother, he would not get out of bed in the morning. He didn't even seem to hear us. We pulled back the sheet and saw pox had spread all over his chest. Then we peeled him off the bed. He'd been sleeping on a foam mattress covered by a rubber sheet and regular bedsheet, but the electricity might have gone out during the night. It was hot, and he stuck to the bottom sheet.
His back was completely covered by pox, there didn't seem to be any spaces between them and he was febrile even after being lifted. I'm pretty certain that either I screamed or my mom did.
I don't know what happened after that, or whether my dad was home. I don't know if she had to call someone and ask for help in getting him to a clinic, or whether he even went to a clinic. I was pretty much kept away from him for a while and all of the adults were worried.
I worried that he would get pox down his throat, since he still sucked his thumb and he was so small. I thought that he wouldn't be able to breathe. I also remember worrying that it was that other pox. (This wasn't as crazy as it sounds. Smallpox hadn't been eradicated yet and was characterized by the rapid emergence of pox and immobilization.) I've had plenty of experiences since then which should have scared me more, but that's the one that taught me not to show fear, because it makes things worse, so I don't react normally to things that should scare me.
