I heard in passing on the news that 50 percent of school kids haven’t heard of 911 - that 911 isn’t taught in school. WTH?
Although remembering my own school years, it always seemed like we ran out of time somewhere around WWII, never seemed to move up through Vietnam and Korea. What I learned about those I learned on my own (thank you PBS). So maybe it’s a matter of not having time to do the whole syllabus.
They need to make sure it gets covered, though, if not in history, in civics. Somewhere.

I have no problem with not teaching about it at the elementary level. No way they can understand it in any context.

They need to make sure it gets covered, though, if not in history, in civics. Somewhere. Why? Is Kennedy's Assassination included in grade school history (more than in passing - as in on this day this happened - on to the next event) ? The Summer of Love (the Altamont Free Concert?) The end of the Vietnam War? Space Shuttle Challenger disaster (an amazing amount of school children watched it happen live.)? Are they taught about the Los Angeles Riots, Oklahoma City bombing and the Columbine Shooting? I could go on. I get it that 9/11 stopped America and was on the TV non stop for days... I'm not sure Grade School is the place to have it covered. Especially if it's a Unit or some class project is built around it. I think it's more appropriate for HS American History as the students can look at in context with other American and World happenings before and after it happened. I'm not really sure that looking deeply into the horror of the deaths that happened that day is appropriate for GS kids. It's not exactly "G rated or PG rated material". I'm not sure making it G rated or PG rated is a good thing. If it is - then why aren't we teaching/showing more about war (than dates and cool planes and ships) to our children?? Why don't we show the actual horrors of war to our children in Grade School?? I think it's more appropriate for HS or College so it can be covered in depth and in context. www.patreon.com/posts/never-forget-56000942?fbclid=IwAR2aEoVmKFRVd5OmVXsB3-1KO_S4c4h4_6w0k9YT8vye4mcPouK-oPfp-7k 9/11 effected my employer and indirectly me - thru financial data we would get from our New York office located in the World Trade Center.

Having had deaths in my family from a very young age & up thru my grade school years (and my freshman yr. of high school)...I understood more than a bunch of the kids in my classes, but others in there also understood. A lot of that would depend on what goes on (is discussed) at home and whether or not the kids are exposed to adult discussions. ETA...Before I was a teen....my mother had died, one of my nephews had died & my grandmother who lived with us had died. I knew why for each instance and any that I didn't understand...I had one Uncle who very patiently explained it all to me...in words that I understood.

I assumed it was high school since this isn’t something you would expect to be discussed with younger kids. I don’t remember doing any history before HS other than making hand turkeys around Thanksgiving day like the pilgrims did - except that wasn’t real history, turns out. Too bad is was just talking heads on TV

Not really. We over reached Nation building can never be successful in a Country that doesn't really want it..... but groups of people are presenting a real risk to our Countries and way of life will still be in the sights.
9/11 is and always will be very upsetting.

Bush Jr gave a great speech on 9/11, warning about the rising threat of domestic terrorism, making veiled references to 1/6. www.newsweek.com/george-bush-delights-democrats-infuriates-maga-world-veiled-jan-6-9-11-comparison-1628208I wasn’t a fan of Bush Jr as a president (he delegated too much to his hawk advisors) and maybe he just improves compared to the more recent presidents, but it’s evident to me he’s a good Christian, a decent human being, and a true patriot. Bush Jr gave this speech yesterday. Obama, Clinton and Biden went to a 9/11 memorial service in NYC. Trump showed up at a NYC fire house and shook hands for a while, then hosted a pay per view boxing match with his son (for a fee).

You're too kind to trump. trump was campaigning at the NYC firehouse.

My GrS mentioned that a lot of the old news coverage has been removed from youtube. He'd watch the old news as remembrance.

Wow. I couldn’t figure out why Trump would do that until I read the article- didn’t realize how deeply involved with the GOP they are. And their MAGA compound in PA. So - he did a second campaign event, I guess.

Maybe some of the understanding came from being raised on a farm & seeing how life was thru the animals we raised....birth, death & other interactions between the animals and between animals & humans. We had already been prepared for "international terrorism"....learning how to get under our desks in case Russia sent a nuclear bomb....and few of us thought those desks would protect us! We some times talked about it when the teachers or other adults weren't around.

Watching the NYC memorial yesterday, and watching all the people at the podiums call out the names of those who died that day, a young woman and an older woman the podium caught my attention.
After the older woman announced the list of names given to her to announce, she then gave the name of her husband who was killed that day at the WTC. She gave a brief description of her husband and said she missed him.
It was now the young woman's turn. After reading the names given to her to announce, she said her father's name who died in the WTC that day and spoke briefly about him too.
While the older woman was able to get through describing her husband without tearing up, the young woman got emotional several times.
The tender looks the older woman gave the young woman as the young woman spoke really got my attention. I had to rewind the scene as I really wasn't paying attentions to the names of the husband or father who died. I thought both women were speaking about the same man and the older woman and young woman were a mother and daughter.
But no, they were speaking about two different men. The empathy shown by the older woman toward the young woman kind of took my breath away.

I remember the 'drop' drills also. We were told the desks will help protect us from the ceiling falling. Had no problem with that explanation ........
