I do find it kind of interesting that the "path" or sequence of events isn't all that unique to this case or that Alex's actions varied from what appears to be a standard script/plan of action for these kinds of things. Perhaps he didn't kill his family - but the rest of it just seems to be how these things play out.
It's like he and his family got on the "this doesn't end well" path and just kept following it. How many other times has this played out pretty much the same way? How many other times has this happened and been reported on? I'm guessing fairly often over the centuries. (ok, maybe it's because I'm seeing Verdi's opera MacBeth and MacBeth is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays... MacBeth is more about a play for political power but it's still a "train wreck" you can't look away from and which MacBeth can't seem to stop - he just commits and keeps going (with some help/prodding from Lady MacBeth)
Is it human nature (a kind of reflex action or instinct or our lizard brains) that influence a person's thinking and actions when faced with the kinds of pressures Alex Murdaugh faced/is facing? Or is it something else (like he saw what other's have done in a TV show (and failed at) and thought "I can do it the right way! and have a positive outcome that will get me out of this difficult place")?

Well, this kind of reminds me of the movie Fargo, where a guy thought he came up with a good plan to get some cash from his father in law, until things kept going from bad to worse. However, in this case, there’s some kind of drug addiction problem, and under stress, that just tends to get worse, which tends to short circuit the brain until it isn’t capable of logical thought or imagining consequences. There’s an older son some where in this mix, watching his family fall apart. Very tragic.

Article with more details. www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/murders-money-and-mystery-swirl-around-prominent-murdaugh-family-in-south-carolina-what-we-know/ar-AAOejJCAlex and his dad, who was the solicitor for the 14th judicial court, showed up at the hospital where the boat crash victims were to try to prevent them from answering questions- and they were trying to conspire to deflect blame for the crash onto another boy in the boat. I’m curious about this 2015 unsolved murder of a gay guy, Stephen Smith, who was killed on a rural road. They reopened this case when they were investigating the murders of the mom and son, so there must be a link. The mom claims she knows who the murderer is. Wouldn’t be the first respectable middle age family man who killed his gay lover to avoid being outed, if that’s what happened. Could be Smith’s relatives, knowing Murdaugh would never face justice for the murder, decided to murder some of the family members.

There's this from July 2021 about Steven Smith's death: www.wistv.com/2021/07/07/new-audio-video-released-2015-death-stephen-smith/I'm guessing what's being hinted at is that it was one (or both) of Alex Murdaugh's son(s) who might have been in that "group of people" who spotted Smith along the road. In 2015 the younger son (who was killed with his mom) - would have been 15 or 16? I'm not sure how old the older son would have been. Smith was 19 so MIGHT have been in the same "social circle" as the older Murdaugh son (and possibly the younger son as well). Smith's mom may have been aware of any harassment/ill will between her kid and the Maudaugh's kid(s) and the Murdaugh kid(s)'s friends. HS can be a pressure cooker.... for kids who are on the "fringes" or who get pushed to the fringes by their peers. I'm guessing the Murdaugh kids are at the heart of Alex's problems or were "rocking the boat" when it came to keeping up social appearances.

Is there an older brother? Does he live in the area? There is an older brother, but I don’t know where he lives. He doesn’t get mentioned much. This family had several houses (where the mom and younger brother were murdered was just a ‘hunting lodge’) so the older brother may be at one of the other homes, or maybe he’s old enough he’s on his own and has moved far off. If my dad was a closet drug addict I think I would have moved far off as soon as I could, anyway.

Of course, the dad is claiming he has a drug addiction - but he wouldn’t be the first person to crash and burn and then blame it on mental health/drug issues. I probably watch to many true crime shows.

www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/unsolved-murdaugh-shootings-yield-misconduct-claim-conflicting-accounts-—-and-more-questions/ar-AAOj8jd?li=BBnb7KzMore info - lots of funny looking stuff - somehow, when the younger son crashed his boat and the young woman was killed, none of the police there thought to give him a breath alcohol test. And the first report written by the police when they met up with the dad Alex after his incident with the flat tire said that they couldn’t see any head injury - that was changed later on to say that a head injury was evident. Then, in the 2015 death of the young man Stephen, it was variously reported that he was hit and killed by a car, struck by the mirror on a car, or that he was beaten and had a defense wound on his hand. And - now it seems that the older son Buster graduated with the victim and is rumored to be involved in the death.

Ok, can’t post in my phone but the daily beast has an article that says Alex Murdaugh wasn’t an attempted murder, he got someone to shoot him so that his remaining son would have 10 million to be able to attend college.
The guy who agreed to shoot him is apparently his opiate dealer who, according to Alex’s lawyers, preyed on Alex and his ability to pay a lot of money for meth.
Both Murdaugh and the shooter provided statements, shooter is in custody.

Ya know - when I watch some of the TV family dramas (for example - Succession) I am acutely aware it is fiction because no family is that fucked up.
And here is this family, just proving me wrong.

The plot thickens even more. Death of Murdaugh housekeeper who fell in home yields criminal investigationThe death three years ago of a longtime housekeeper and nanny for the Murdaugh family will be the subject of a criminal investigation, South Carolina authorities announced Wednesday, yielding yet another unexpected turn in a case that has entangled a prominent legal family. A spokesman for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said the death of Gloria Satterfield has prompted a review following a request from the Hampton County coroner and based on "information gathered" during a separate investigation involving Alex Murdaugh, the legal scion whose wife and son were fatally shot in June. Satterfield's death "was not reported to the coroner at the time, nor was an autopsy performed," Hampton County Coroner Angela Topper wrote in a letter to state investigators in her request. "On the death certificate, the manner of death was ruled 'natural,' which is inconsistent with injuries sustained in a trip and fall accident." Complete article here: linkColonel Mustard did it.

Worse - she fell, Murdaugh got a settlement of 505,000 from his home insurance policy, supposedly to give the money to the housekeepers sons, then they got nothing. Where did the 505 K go? I’m guessing up Alex’s nose or in his arm, however they do that. One of the sons is special needs, too. Guess they figured no one would believe that an upstanding pillar of the community would screw them over like that. Plus it looks very fishy they didn’t do a post mortum. Guess when you’re a pillar of the community you don’t have to follow all the normal rules. What a mess.
