I live in farm country and it's hard to put a big round bale in a Prius. Electric vehicles are handy for moving people around on short trips, but are not appropriate for hauling any kind of load. For that reason, I don't see combustion engines disappearing any time soon. What about the new Ford Lightning? It supposedly can tow up to 10,000 lbs and haul a payload of 2,000 lbs. I would love an electric car, or at least a plug-in hybrid EV. Most of my drives are less than 30 miles roundtrip, but my vehicle is also the one we take on vacations, so I would like a longer driving range or a plug-in variation so I'm not always worried about charging stations.

Anyone who is pushing for expanding electric cars has a vision that is far bigger than what you see on the streets today. Also Pruis are not full electric, and they were discontinued (although they are bringing back the name.) I don't think many electric cars are shaped like the pruis. It seems an odd illustration to criticize the future of electric cars.

I did not mean to criticize the future of electric cars, I was trying to illustrate how not every electric vehicle is capable of hauling large items or heavy loads. The Prius example was probably not the best.
I can see the pollution that hangs over Phoenix. I am all for expanding rail service, electric vehicles and reducing the carbon footprint on the road.

I wouldn’t haul a bale of hay in any vehicle cause I have no need. But then this wouldn’t be usual with any sedan
But I was easily able to carry a grandfather clock in my Tesla S, also a tall dresser.

We did the switch, partially. I bought a plug-in hybrid with a 50 mile electric only range back in April, and installed solar panels on the shop. Very happy with both. The solar panels cover our electric bill fully during the summer months, including charging the R4P. We needed a new car anyways since our younger boy will be driving my wife's 2020 Subaru Outback here very soon, and the Rav4 Prime was only a couple thousand more expensive than another Outback, after the $10,000 in total government refunds / rebates. The 300hp R4P is very fun to drive, especially in electric only mode. It gets an equivalent 60-70mpg and costs about half as much in gas money per mile, compared to our Outbacks, with twice the power. Even less in the long run with our new solar panels.

I can now see why many of my local houses have sprouted solar panels. I don't think it's to "sell power back to the electric company and make a fortune!" it's to help provide electricity to power their vehicles (and home) in a cost effective way. I like it.

And batteries are becoming very efficient. There's a lot of research going into them right now (guess what field I work in conjunction with).
