Along that line of stupid:
7 San Diego area vacationing families evacuated from Afghanistan.
"The Los Angeles Times reported last week that more than 20 students and 16 parents from the school district had traveled to Afghanistan on summer vacation before they became among the thousands of Americans the U.S. was working to evacuate following the Taliban's consolidation of power."

I've been scratching my head over that since I saw it on the news the other day. It was no secret that the U.S. was getting ready to pull its forces out of Afghanistan. It was in all the papers. What did they think was going to happen? Did they think, "Oh, we're just tourists, so it will all just happen without affecting us; it will just add to our travel experience"? I was reminded of a young woman I served with in the Air Force in Berlin in the mid 1970s who wanted to go to Beirut on leave because she had heard it was "the Paris of the Middle East" and wanted to see it because it must be beautiful. There was a civil war going on in Beirut at the time and much of the city was in ruins and the part that was not yet in ruins was actively in the process of being reduced to ruins by large explosions. When we pointed this out to her, she said, "Oh, but I'm an American. The war has nothing to do with me. I'll just be a tourist." She was incensed to learn that she would not get either approval or a visa for her travel plans and never really grasped the reason. People are stupid.

Going to visit to be there around the last minute just seems like begging for trouble.

I People are stupid. No kidding. So I did " a thing" and looked for news articles when Biden announced the August 31st withdrawal date. There was a Washington post article dated April 13 about that announcement! There are probably a lot of things that could and should have been done better, but getting US civilians out of there on those last flights should not have happened. Those students and their companions treated their summer vacation like a last minute to the grocery store running in 5 minutes before closing time and now people are upset that they were in danger. It is not like they couldn't have known the Taliban was in the country, or that fighting would intensify around the exit date. They just expext to be bailed out by the government. I just can't with that level of stupidity and entitlement

In the past (like the 80's and 90's) there use to be a "Travel Advisory" that the US Government use to provide and update. It would highlight countries that might be dangerous to visit - either because the country wasn't fond of the US or because of something happening in the country. Back in like the 80's and the 90's if you were traveling to one of those places (direct flight from the US to there...) you got some more warnings when you went to book your travel to that place. Back in the 80's and 90's my employer would send people to other offices in various places around the world. I also worked here with many Americans who would go "home" to visit family and friends. Various places in South America and the "middle east" usually had "travel advisories". It was a topic of water cooler discussion. Back then I knew a couple two three people who opt to travel into Canada and then fly to where ever it was they were going (so they weren't coming directly from the US). I think sometimes they traveled on "not American" passports - or maybe it had something to do with dual citizenship I was never clear on this piece of it. Anyway the gist of all that is that traveling to places that might be "dangerous" or "difficult" isn't new and I'm pretty sure smart people go about this kind of travel "smartly"... my coworkers going to other places for our employer (work related travel) or personal travel (to go home or to visit friends/relatives). I'm guessing there were Travel Advisories for Afghanistan. I'm wondering if there is more to the story of the students and parents who traveled to Afghanistan. Were they "missionaries" and weren't just staying for a few days or a week but rather planning on staying as long as possible? Did they travel indirectly to Afghanistan (rather than the typical way an American tourist might travel there)?

Afghan who came to the US many years ago on special visas issued because they were not safe there anymore after working for the US. They are either permanent residents or US citizens now. However, taking into account why they moved to the US in the first place they really should have known better than going there after the exit date had been announced

The State Department maintains a status on many countries. I'm sure Afghanistan has been a reconsider travel status for many years. You can't force people to think.

Pretty sure we told our citizens to get out of Afghanistan back in April What on earth were they doing there? I was wondering how many were govt contractors and had some obligation to stay, or something terrible like that. But yes, everyone should have seen this coming and taken care of their own evacuation awhile ago.
