I'm prepping myself to quit in a huff. I've done it twice before. Seems I'm due?
I'd give 2 weeks notice of course. I'd be professional, but my boss and other higher ups would know I was quitting in a huff.
I'd take a long time off, maybe forever? Who knows.
Should I think twice, or give in to the urge?

Think twice, unless you are actually ready to retire.
Whenever I'm tempted to do anything in a huff or because I'm mad or for spite, I stop and ask myself how will I benefit from this. Usually I won't, so I go back to being more adult about it.

Yes I know the feeling all too well, but when you finally know that you CAN quit whenever you want, it helps to deal with the daily BS. Set a target date, say to yourself I will be done by 11/1 and see if that helps.

I always ask myself “what’s the worst that can happen?” And I have quit in a huff before but I think my definition of a “huff” differs somewhat from yours.

I imagine if you posted a retirement budget, people would be happy to tell you if you should quit in a huff or not. My mom quit in a huff about 20 years ago and has really enjoyed retirement, but one of my friends quit in a huff and her husband had to get a second job, so that didn't work out quite so well.

I permanently quit in a huff 18 years ago and never looked back. But it’s just me and no one else to consider so that could be a factor with some.

If I remember correctly, you are mid-50s with low 7 figures saved. That's probably enough to last you for 40 years, combined with SS when you decide to take it.
I wouldn't pay on your daughter's loans anymore, if they aren't already paid off.
I would be really judicious about any more home improvements. They would be limited to needed repairs rather than more wanted updates. In a hot housing market, cosmetic stuff won't matter anyway. In the run up of 2008, houses with shag carpeting from the 70s on walls were still commanding top dollar. ETA; Would I leave in a huff in your situation. No. But I'm a card-carrying member of "Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility," the Catholic church at lake Wobegon. The heath insurance would be the biggest issue for me. That said, my mil retired at like 52 and FIL at 55ish. So it worked out great for them. They had more than you saved. Less debt. No idea about the health insurance. Were able to travel extensively abroad from 55-65 and then domestically from 65-70. Still plenty enough to cover them as they move to the final stage of their lives.

Health insurance?
Can Rukh Inc help subsidize retirement?

Depends. I've quit in a huff twice but that was only after making darn sure I already had a job lined up. I am much farther away from retirement than you are so just quitting wasn't an option.
From what you have said about your skill set it sounds like if you keep up with education/certs you could reenter the job force without much difficulty especially if you are still doing Rukh Inc and that would supplement your income. It's not like you'd be eating cat food and hoarding drinking water.
How much would health insurance cost? That has always been my biggest deterent. Don't count on the exchange either. Iowa's is awful. Even if I was willing to do a $12k deductible I found that none of the hospitals/doctors in Omaha/CB are in network for those plans. I need to have a plan from a company that operates here so that puts limits on me quitting in a huff.

We get all those statements every year from the company that we had coverage for the whole year etc. etc. Is that not the case for Medicare? Can you get Medicare even if you did not have health insurance prior to starting it? Thanks

I don’t know if things have changed in 13 years. I signed up with Blue Cross Blue Shield and no questions asked about health or if had insurance in force.

I have not ever done it, but I'm looking forward to the day when I can afford to. I'm thinking my first will just be a threat that I'm willing to follow through on in hopes of a big raise. I either win the gamble or retire a little earlier than expected. Either outcome sounds good to me.

I keep watching the Biden's Medicare expansion proposal with crossed fingers which would drop the age to 60. Although, we have very good ACA options that I'd get a ton of subsidies for, so I'd bridge with that.

I wouldn't say that I quit my job in a huff, but I did my best to time it so it would be difficult. My boss was a nit picking, overachiever, micro manager type person and I had it with him. I had busted my hump and created all kinds of reports to help us verify orders before we placed them. There was one single mistake made. One! In thousands of POs issued. He kept harping on the one error.
The company went out of business a few years ago. I wasn't surprised.

Quitting in a huff to me means quitting that day! If you give 2 weeks notice that’s a standard ‘quit’ Yep, think carefully Always better to have another job , your own company or sufficient retirement funding before quitting

Set a target date, say to yourself I will be done by 11/1 and see if that helps. This is pretty much what I did at my last job. I set a date when I was going to get out of my last job and I lasted that long. LOL I ended up getting Laid off due to a downsizing of the department, but that was fine with me, because I got severance pay. I don't really like my current job either, but I work for Health Insurance. My weekly check is $34.24 - the rest of my pay goes into HSA/401K/Roth/Taxes. I am not ready to stop retirement savings, and I don't want to absorb the cost of health insurance into our current budget. I could change my mind on a whim too though. Could you get a teaching gig? How is Rukh Inc doing? I would not quit without an interim plan.

That would be great. I am 57 and DH is 56, but WI has never accepted Medicare Expansion, so we might have to leave the state to get Medicare at 60, which is not a reality, b/c I doubt DH will be ready to close down the business. Possibly though, there will be more pressure on Republicans to accept Medicare expansion if it will benefit a larger section of their base.

Think twice, unless you are actually ready to retire. Whenever I'm tempted to do anything in a huff or because I'm mad or for spite, I stop and ask myself how will I benefit from this. Usually I won't, so I go back to being more adult about it. I may be ready! I think I'd make it. ETA: I'm being shamefully taken advantage of right now, and I'm starting to be ashamed at myself for letting it drag on this long. I think it is more adult to stand up for myself than to continue to ask for what I've already earned and not even being given the curtesy of being told no. Just wait for this, wait for that, I'll check with this person, check with that, not right now, next fall, next fiscal, maybe in a month.....well over a year now. I'm tired of this!

Maybe giving your resignation may bring the problem to head and they will have to decide if they will give you the promotion. Good luck with whatever you decide. There is only so much you can take and you have been responsible for a long time.

Rukh even if you do quit, wouldn’t it be wiser not to burn that bridge? You could offer to consult for them via Rukh Inc …

I think I need about 75k a year - depending on health insurance. Maybe 90k tops? Can you do HDHP/HSA on the exchange? I have 1.6 million in retirements, 100k for house improvements, 20k HSA, 30k a year mortgage payments (360 balance), 100k student loan balance. Home worth 540k on redfin. Trying to keep but don't mind selling if need be. Expect to be an empty nester by EOY/EOP (end of pandemic) at the latest. About 25-30k annual RI income past 2 years. Thinking of taking up golf.....
