I have a 2014 Honda Odyssey. It has 150000 miles on it.
I’ve just sunk $3500 in repairs into it. Brakes, shocks, the “brain” chip, radiator, transmission check, etc.
My plan is to buy a new car next year and give this to DS when he turns 16. DH is thinking we maybe should have traded it and got me a new car now.
The problem with DH’s thoughts: The dealerships are barren. Used cars are super expensive abd we’d still have to get DS something next year.
What would you do?

I would definitely wait until next year before purchasing new or used. Things will get back to more normal especially for new cars when the chip shortage is over and the manufacturers are back to full production

I would keep it and wait. I agree with you that there's very little inventory available. And you'll know the history of the vehicle he's driving that it has been maintained.
I assume at some point the chips will catch up and more new inventory will be available.
Where's Phil at? I thought the unicorn Hondas were supposed to go to 200k miles with just tires, brakes and oil changes.

This was us last year. Our car (2007) had 190,000 miles and we had just paid about $3000 in repairs. We had been kind of looking for a car, but the lots were mostly empty. A new shipment finally came in with what we wanted, we bought the car, and gave the old car to our son. Well worth it in my opinion.
Definite plus is we know everything that has been done to the old car. It's a workhorse and will probably last him a few more years.

We just bought a newish(2020) car in June. Options were limited. So I agree that waiting may be best.
I think waiting makes more sense if you have a new driver. Having been through this, having a beater for them to drive is the way to go. Otherwise, you then are playing car roulette. You also get to experience the joy of no longer being a chauffer. I think your plan is better. I also think if you trade this one in, in short order you will be buying 2 cars(one for him), once the hassle of sharing cars becomes apparent

I would go with your plan for all of the above reasons listed by the other posters. Under the circumstances right now, your DH's idea doesn't make a whole lot of sense...JMO

I have new caritis too, but figure that if I want to get what I want, I’m going to wait until my choices are better and I’m not paying a premium. My car is 14 years old, but in good shape. It’ll easily go another year……or several.
I’d go with your first plan.

Wait. Really bad time to buy a car right now. Sounds like he just has new car fever.

If you can find anything now, you're probably going to pay top dollar. It is to be hoped that inventory will be at a more normal level once the supply and production problems have been overcome. Of course, it is possible that next year's models will be so much more expensive than this year's models that the cost would not be much different from what you'd be paying now even after being able to negotiate the price (which apparently is not happening now due to the limited stock).
I was hoping to buy a car last year but decided to avoid unnecessary interactions with random humans for plague-related reasons as I am an old person. My first post-vaccination activity was going to be car shopping. Now no-one has anything much to sell. If one does not absolutely have to get a new car now, I think it will probably be wise to wait until there is more choice and the balance of power in the transaction is slightly less heavily weighted at 100% in favor of the seller. Of course, I could be completely wrong (I often am), but I've given up car shopping until at least fall.

I know someone having to look for a car because their lease is coming up. They can't find what they want and started looking at some luxury cars because they have some stock and the gap between them aren't much anymore.
I was just starting to debate whether the car payment was worth the fancy car. This craziness is a big ol nope! I'll wait another year or two.

I wouldn't trade it in if the plan is to give it to son next year. But what's the harm in passively looking in the meantime? You maybe find something in the next few months and the van hangs out in your driveway until son gets his license? Oh no, the horror.

Our lease is ending in a few weeks and we are using the option to extend by another year to give ourselves some time to check out other offers.

We are in the same boat (DH drives a 2009 Accord) and we have a 15yo. We're going to give it to DS next year and DH will get a new(er) car then. Way too crazy right now to buy anything.

I was surprised at how quickly my 2012 Honda Fit left the lot and the price they used for list.
When I bought my Honda this spring, there was no negotiating to be had.

We are in the same boat. Technically we have an extra car, (DH's Mustang), but he only drives it usually from April to September. I have been driving DH's old car a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe with about 136,000 miles on it. The plan was to drive it for a while yet, but there seems to be one mechanical issue after another with it. DH told me the other day he has lost confidence in it. I had decided I wanted a RAV4 Prime, but they are not taking orders on them. I would prefer a Red or Blue one. DH found one in Massachusetts? that is Grey...I am not too enthused, a color you don't care for gets really irritating when your plan is to drive it into the dirt.
I also think we will broaden out the Models we want to look into. I was looking at the Ford Escape PHEV (online) earlier today, but it appears it does not come as AWD. I found that Chips are supposed to be coming available this month, and the cars are supposed to be hitting the lots soon. If you wait until fall, or Nov/Dec, finding what you want should get easier.
Idk if I will find my RAV4 Prime though, they apparently stopped taking orders for it last July...So there are probably lots of people that want one that have been shut out of buying one.
Our winters don't get really bad here until after Christmas, so I might be ok waiting until Nov/December to see if I can negotiate a better deal.

I have a 2010 Honda Odyssey with 140k miles, and I really want a new car, but it is so crazy! I should have bought this spring- was thinking about a hyundai tucson hybrid and they were actually doing 2k off MSRP.
Now I'm just hoping the chip shortage gets better late this year so the prices stabilize by next spring.

I'd keep it too. We have a 2010 Sienna. It's probably at 120K. DH put 1K in it for repairs a few weeks ago. He thinks the cruise control died last weekend.. I told him he has to suck it up for another year or so, until we get the cash together for a replacement.

The people who break the records of 300K miles, 500K miles and beyond don't achieve that by only doing oil changes, brakes, tires & wheels. Things break. They are not sadly designed for a lifetime. Rubber and other parts wear out. If we treated houses like we do cars, how many people would actually live in their homes twenty years or more? VW dealership near me seems hungry though. I just want to test drive a Jetta and see how I feel about it. Odds are I will be buying used in the near future unless a miracle occurs in this next year. Used stock is available but prices do seem high. Much like housing.

If I could find the new car that I wanted I’d buy and sell the Odyssey rather than trade-in. Used car market seems to be more over-inflated than the new car market because dealers have to be careful about going too far over MSRP. Then maybe in a year when it’s time to buy the used car, the market is more normalized.

The Covid shot gave me the power to fly. But seriously, I picked up my van at the dealer today. The had 1 Pilot in stock. $51,000. Ouch.

I had to spend about $400 several years ago for a pulley or something and about the same a couple years ago for a crankshaft pulley or something. Both times, I had warning, it was making an unusual whining noise that I got checked out. I’ve also had to replace the starter. I think that’s pretty good for a car I bought new 18 years ago. Even with the age and mileage, I have enough confidence in her that I recently spent a few thousand dollars fixing a few things, mostly front end issues. But even then, she was still running (except for when I let the battery die from not driving her, but that was my fault) and getting me to wherever I needed to go.

When she started having problems with the transmission, nobody would touch it, not even places that specialize in transmissions. Something else went wrong that I don’t remember, but the result was the same. It pretty much had to go to a Volkswagon dealer for repairs, which DD could not afford. I was not impressed at all with Jetta’s after her experience.

My last 2 vehicles were either a program car or a vehicle the dealership owner used as a demonstrator. One had 6000 miles, the other had 15000, they both had new car warranties.
My current car was the program car. It's really nice has heated and cooled seats all the bells and whistles, leather, a pretty sleek car. I love sharp looking vehicles. It's a Chrysler 300 Sedan, sedans are no longer popular. It now has 35k, only issue was the backup camera and replaced under warranty. I only paid $22k cash for it, no trade in.
We helped the renter get cars one a demo and the other a rental car. The rental needed new tires and a part under warranty. I don't know if you can get deals right now but I have.
The last 3 I have only run 35k miles or 50k, were traded for various reasons, just the usage I needed at the time.
By the way, hubs does clear the table after dinner, so that's a big help. That is the time of day my feet are in the worst shape of the day. He will go to the basement and get anything I need, so that is helpful.
We are talking about having cabinets built for a bar in the kitchen. That way we can eat at the bar like our last house. Will save a lot of walking for me. We can get the amish to make it to match our cabinets. I suggested wheels on it so we can move it if needed. We will talk further about it. I like the idea. Also I can get rid of a cabinet between the kitchen and dining room.

Any car can be treated badly or have issues. I personally would not hang my hat on a data point of one car, but that's me.
