8 person race with up to five ranked choices to get to 50% A recent Ipsos poll placed Adams at 28 percent, with Yang at 20 percent, Garcia at 15 percent, Wiley at 13 percent, Stringer at 8 and the rest of the field in the low single digits. link If those numbers are the actual first round votes, it would take a minimum of canceling at least four candidates first round votes. More likely five. Greatly increases the odds of needing to look at voters third choice and even fourth. Fifth? Then you have the potential shift of how many votes get you to 50% if voters mark only 4/3/2/1/0 alternate choices. So much fun.

I am intrigued by this. With those numbers as a start, could i run through my choices?
My 1st choice ends up 8th, no one has 50% yet, so next round they use my 2nd choice. My 2nd choice ends up 7th, no one has 50% yet, so next round they use my 3rd choice. My 3rd choice ends up 6th, no one has 50% yet, so next round they use my 4th choice. My 4th choice ends up 5th, no one has 50% yet, so next round they use my 5th choice. My 5th choice ends up 4th, no one is likely to have 50% yet, but I am out of choices.
So it is possible.

Yeah, but on the other hand, if you are consistently ranking the terrible candidates at the top, I don't think we'll miss your vote not ultimately counting....

He also said something that I'll have to find on line. I almost yelled at the TV. He was saying something so not true for the Trump and the GOP party in the last 4 years, I wanted to say "Where in the H have you been in the last 4 years? Asleep?"

I don't have any interest in the NYC mayoral race. I am interested in election processes generally and this ranked choice situation on the Democratic side has the potential to be very interesting in a wonky way. Okay, probably also for those who care who wins which isn't me.

I'm kind of interested in the ranked voting, to see how it works. But much more curious to see what happens with the Buffalo mayoral race. The 4 term incumbent Byron Brown just lost the D primary to an inexperienced, *gasp* socialist India Walton. They are claiming she's the next mayor. The incumbent has no other party lines, it's too late to declare on any other line, the R's aren't running anyone at all. His only chance is a write-in campaign, but he did no campaigning against his challenger, skipped the debate, etc. Of course, Carl Paladino is threatening to run his own write-in campaign if Brown doesn't. So Brown can't gracefully concede, or the race turns into a three ring circus with Paladino mucking things up. Now that I think of it, Paladino is a lot like Trump (scaled down), but wilier.

Gotta love headline writers: NYC Board of Elections throws mayoral primary into chaos by counting test ballotsBut within hours of the new figures coming online, the board backtracked -- following questions from the Adams campaign and others -- and acknowledged a "discrepancy" in its counting process. It subsequently removed the data from its website. Late Tuesday night, the body put out another statement, this time revealing it had mistakenly included 135,000 test vote records in the initial tally. The count will be re-run once the slate is cleared. What chaos? Results released. They were questioned. The board agreed there was a problem. They identified the problem. They are fixing the problem. Seems orderly to me. I think this weakens the arguments about vote count issues in the 2020 Presidential election. It shows how easy it is to identify and work to fix problems. Granted it would be nice if things go perfectly the first time but such is life.
