And living in the town all that traffic passed through was not at all delightful! We also have a bridge that a couple semis have blown partway over the railings. The water is far below, very deep and very fast!

As a teenager, I’ve been across one of those bridges that raise up to let ships through. I want to say it was in Chicago. Me no likey. Looks like Lake Ponchartrain is the only scary bridge I haven’t erased from my memory where it’s located. [img src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png" alt=" " class="smile"] I have to cross one of those every time I have to go into work. Its short, though, so not a big deal crossing. Its just a pita when they open it during rush hour.

The Lake Ponchartrain Causeway going into New Orleans really, really wrecks my nerves. It’s almost 24 miles ling IIRC. It almost feels like you’re crossing an ocean, because for so long, there’s no end in sight. The first time I crossed it, I wasn’t driving, and deliberately went to sleep in the backseat before we got to it. One time I went to New Orleans with somebody that knew I was afraid of bridges. We were out sightseeing and I look up and we were at the entrance to the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway even though he KNEW I didn't want to go across it. I got so upset and angry, I almost cried. And of course, once we finally got across it, we had to come back. That was the end of the fun, I raised hell with him for the rest of the trip. Chances are then you wouldn't lie the drive down to Key West, Florida. Lots of bridges over open water. You might not even like the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Not only do you travel over a Bridge and travel over open water. But you also drive underwater for a bit. ROFLMAO. At the start of my first marriage I had to drive from Philadelphia to Virginia Beach where my then-DH was going to be stationed (USN.) I had grown up in New England and never heard of a bridge-tunnel. So as I was driving over the first bridge part in the evening light fog and saw that water crossed the highway up ahead I was shocked and slowed down. A truck going the other way blew past me. I flicked through radio channels trying to find news of a bridge being out while I drove more and more slowly. No U-turns on this bridge! When I finally crept to the mouth of the tunnel and could see that all was well I was shaky. I did get used to it, and the Hampton Roads bridge-tunnel, in the years to follow. But I've never forgotten that sensation.

I have to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel from time to time and it is not fun. Occasionally a semi or other vehicle goes off the side and someone dies. It’s really scary.

They has announced in Memphis that it's going to take a long time to get this repaired or rebuilt (whatever they need to do). Regardless, this is going to be a real problem for transportation .

Cracked? Oh <excuse> me! I've seen the pictures. That is a break!
I've omitted several references to symmetry and still-connected-ness and cracks while composing this post. If your mind is in the gutter, you can probably reconstruct them. It's colorful and colloquial but the major point is the same. Something cracked still has bits that are still connected. I'm looking a pix of a broken beam that has settled into a position that nobody with a shred of honesty could ever describe as merely cracked. The break is obvious and complete and the broken bits do not line up.

Exactly! The news stations did call it a crack, but when I saw the pictures, I was like “crack where”?! It definitely looks more like a “break” to me. And certainly worthy, in my uneducated opinion, of immediately getting all vehicles off of it like they did.

I don't mind small bridges, but have an unfounded fear of long or tall ones. If I'm driving, it's a white knuckle drive for me. My son just loves to scare the crap out of me...and when he was Navy stationed in San Diego, he took me over one that is both curved & sloped at the same time....I kept my eyes closed and hung onto the seat for dear life. I found it, it's the San Diego Coronado Bridge.... www.touristlink.com/united-states/san-diego-coronado-bridge/overview.htmlThere is a small bridge over a small river that runs thru our town that worries me. The date on the bridge makes it almost as old as me....and you can see how old I am by my screen name. This bridge is on a hwy. and it is the main hwy. in/out of town for all things coming here or going thru here...like all the Sanderson Farms big chicken trucks. Trucks that bring the chicks, trucks that bring the feed, trucks that haul off the chickens for slaughter and then trucks to distribute the products to various areas & stores for retail sale/consumption.

Spoke with my neighbor who is a Memphis police captain. He told me their bosses have told them it will take about a month to fix the bridge. So figure 30-45 days to fix it.

Not only do you travel over a Bridge and travel over open water. But you also drive underwater for a bit. Isn’t there another bridge somewhere between Tennessee and Florida that goes underwater? I’m almost positive I’ve been on one like that before, but I can’t remember where I was going. Guess I blocked it out of my mind lol. Maybe it was when I went to Tampa, Florida? I really can’t remember. I’ve always wanted to go to the Keys. I guess I’ll have to nod my head and click my heels together to get there. There are no under water crossings in Tampa-St Pete.

I keep wanting to say somewhere near Pensacola, but I’m not sure if that’s right either since I’m not sure exactly where Pensacola is and where I might have been going that way. LOL! At any rate, I’ve been in one somewhere. I should probably just leave it at that. 🙂

They released the 911 calls the engineers made trying to get the Memphis police to help get everyone off the I-40 bridge after they discovered the “crack”.
People on FB are going in on the time it took to communicate the problem and urgency, and the way the 911 dispatcher handled the call. I don’t agree with the bashing of the engineers making the calls or the dispatcher, but I think there should probably be a better procedure in place. Maybe a direct number to call TDOT and reach someone who will quickly understand who’s calling and the gravity and urgency of what the engineers are reporting. But what do I know….

Now local “economists” are saying that the I-40 shutdown is a “potential disaster” that is going to delay goods and service across the entire country and could increase costs for every distributor and company in America.
Thats the kind of thing I was wondering about when I posted the OP.

I think one of my relatives was driving, but I don’t remember where the heck we were going.

It was creepy and much easier for me to take in day light on my return trip.

Kind of cool fact: the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel are bridge-tunnels due to the US Navy having its base in that area. If it is bombed the ships can still get out (or in); the tunnel portions would allow egress despite the debris from the bridge bombing.

To me crack means the pieces are still together. That has completely come apart.

Wow. And they don’t even know how long it’s been there, just that it wasn’t there in September 2020. And thousands of cars have been driving on it every day since September. Very, very scary. As far as it being described as a crack, they are saying that the underside of it is still connected. Ummm, okay.

So now they are saying that "crack" has been there since 2019. They found drone footage. The same employee from the Arkansas transportation department was responsible for the inspections in 2019 and 2020 and has been fired.

I saw the headlines about someone getting fired, but didn’t read the articles. I know someone had posted pictures they took in 2019 on FB and tagged Arkansas and Tennessee’s Departments of Transportation, saying their photos show the crack was there then. If it’s true that it’s been there a couple of years, that’s TERRIBLE, irresponsible, and a lot of other stuff. And it does nothing for my general mistrust of government. And bridges lol. I just thank God that someone did their job before it collapsed and people were injured or died.

Ergo, did a very poor inspection as they are required to go over the bridge inch-by-inch. Not an inspection which can be completed in an hour let alone a full day.
