So, at my workplace, they are offering to pay kitchen staff (dishwashers, etc) $15/hour plus a 1-2K bonus. $15/hour to wash dishes is more than I got paid for my first office job. Pretty incredible times we live in.
Me too, but the cpi basically doubles every 20 years, so I would expect that to be the case. If you consider that (change in cpi over the years), $15/hr is far from unreasonable.

I'm counting the DAYS! 2543.
What is this deadline MPL - I may try and join you. I had to double check my retirement countdown app for that. LOL
It's July 20th, 2028. I don't know WHY I picked Thursday the 20th. I was shooting for 59 and a half years old and I'm officially that on July 23rd 2028...which is a Sunday. Must have decided screw it, I'm not working that Friday either.

I didn't realize you were that young. Maybe you should start a chicken and farm animal blog. Maybe it will pick up enough in under seven years you can leave early. Chicken cam. Horse fly cam. Indoor cat cam, barn cat cam, lot of possibilities even if you choose to shoot some videos here and there with your phone.

I'm sure the Boomers who made $1/hr at their first job were saying the same thing back in 2009 when the minimum wage reached $7.25. 12 years later, it's not unreasonable for a wage to be double what it was more than a decade ago.

I will still have almost a month to hit the same target age, but I will try and keep that date in mind.

Not at all surprised by that. Saddened, but not surprised. I remain amazed at the resilience of many people who work FT and are underfunded barely able to get by.

Yeah, I don't know. The devil is in the details, which are sorely lacking on Twitter.

Yeah, I don't know. The devil is in the details, which are sorely lacking on Twitter. But it did pique my curiosity. I think the key is to use things like that as a start, not a fact.

Not to derail this thread, but that is what is crazy to me about the current cost of houses. The house that we bought just 2 years ago, would be way beyond our comfort zone if we were looking to buy today. We could get the loan, but even when I bought my first house, what the bank said I could afford was very different from and more than what I felt I could afford and that is the approach Mister and I had when we decided to buy a house. Our salaries have not dramatically increased over the last 2 years, to match the increase in the cost of houses. Mister’s income is quite a bit more than mine, and mine alone is more than the median household income in this county. I could not buy a house by myself that I’d be comfortable with in this market. Even with our incomes combined, I’d be freaking out if we’d waited until now to buy a house. I guess I’m just spoiled by living in an area that use to be fairly reasonable as far as home prices. I really feel for people who make even less money than I do and need or want to buy a house right now. It would stress me out to be buying in a market where a decent house in a halfway decent neighborhood cost $100k more than it was “worth” just a couple years ago. I have 2 coworkers that recently sold their houses in declining neighborhoods in the suburbs. They both sold for more than asking price, one was asking $300k and got $330k. What in the hell?! Not too long ago, that kind of money could buy a nice house with some acres or at least in a neighborhood where you could frolic through the flowers at midnight and be reasonably safe. I’d have a meltdown if I had to pay that much for a house, period. Let alone one that I had good reason to be fearful living in. And again, my income is more than the median household income in this county. So I don’t really understand what is happening. I’m not sure how it’s supposed to work when housing costs so much and so many jobs pay so little, all in the same area. What are people supposed to do? Get in way over their heads trying to live somewhere they feel halfway safe? I keep harping on “comfortable” and “safe” because crime is a real problem in the metro area here. A lot of us, as employees, have been bamboozled. Employers make millions and billions off of our labor, make record profits, and try to treat us any kind of way and demand more work without appropriate additional compensation. When they couldn’t make all the money they do without their employees. They require college degrees that parents and students go deep into debt to get, but so many times, the degree just helps to get the job, not any real money. I’m not mad at the people in the generations behind mine that feel like loyalty to most of these employers is overrated. My apologies for going on a rant.

Ladies after my own heart. I've been counting down since I was 40. 4660 days to go. Do you count calendar days or working days? I need to know so I can start the countdown.

Subtracting out all the weekends, holidays and vacation/sick days seemed like too much work and I'm trying to get away from that.

I was just mentoring one of my coworkers yesterday about her pay. She's been there longer, works for a different guy, and makes the same salary I did on my 5-day salary but w/o benefits. I explained to her that she has all the leverage. She's been there a couple years and handles ALL her boss's clients. There is no other assistant for him. "Get another job lined up and then present your case to him regarding adding benefits and making you salary rather than a clock-in/clock-out w/no paid overtime."

I'm starting to cry daily at my desk, so that is not a good sign.

Life is short, and I know you can afford it.

That sounds pretty horrible to go through every day.

Usually though I cried in my car as I do not like crying in public when I can help it. Is it a momentary thing like a bad boss or bad conditions that may change in the future? Or is it something harder?

Thanks everyone. My employee quit, and we are a 2 man shop, so I am just a little overwhelmed with the amount of work. I hate interviewing from both sides. And my HR lady has decided that we should create a "growth plan" for any new employees - that would mean that anyone I hire will leave the job after 18 months. I can't go through this again. BTW - my employee transfered to another division and was only with me for 6 months. I should have never hired her,, she was overqualified. Before that we had a hiring freeze. So, I have been juggling since March 2020.
I am due for a hefty bonus in January. I am hanging out until then.

Sorry so many of you have stressful jobs or jobs that you hate
I have been very fortunate and always enjoyed my jobs (except for HS at the cookie factory) My husband hated his job and I never could get him to just quit and find something else. I never understood why

That's kinda where they are headed here they want people who will be what they think the company SHOULD be but we aren't even close. Nobody is going to stick around for the 5-10-15 or even longer time frame it takes to bring this company up to that level. It is demoralizing to be a revolving door knowing no matter if they hire someone you're just going to be right back in the same boat in about 6 months or possibly less. The suggestion we focus on actual immediate need and confirm they can actually do the current job falls on deaf ears. Right now we're bringing in another PhD because our new supervisor has stars in his eyes about all the ways she will bring us into the 21st century. Last PhD we had lasted six months as soon as she found out what this job really entailed she was back to looking.

I never understood why Well for me it's health insurance and there is the real risk I may not find anything. I have with several jobs started looking as soon as I walked in the door and was out in about 3-4 months but not without having something else lined up. For my current job I really cannot beat what I pay in premiums for family insurance. Also I need the stability after having no choice but to job hop every 3-5 years for the first decade and a half of my career. That doesn't mean I am going to stay here till I retire though. Once I hit the five year mark I will polish my resume and start seeing what is out there, especially if they keep it up with the no raises/2.9% raises. I can't go another 30 years without a major salary jump in there somewhere.

I LOVE my job and the people that work for me, even my attendance issue woman, but I am still short staffed and juggling so many balls that eventually something big will be dropped. It has been this way the last 2 years, but really got to me today. I shut my door and had a good cry, and now I am hiding out because anyone who looks at me will know what I've been doing. Plus I do need a therapist. And the few I reached out to this week have no openings. I am afraid I will get into a spiral if I don't change something.

According to this, labor force participation is up to 61% whereas unemployment is between 5 and 6%. www.linkedin.com/news/story/more-than-900k-jobs-added-in-july-4475521/And nearly a million jobs were added. Came across this website when I looked up labor force participation. Highest level was at the turn of the century and was 67%. Population at that time was 282 million. Currently, it's 331 million. 67% of 282M is 189M 61% of 331M is 202M Just some interesting data points.

Hm. On last night's local news we were told all about how there are hundreds of thousands of jobs open in the state and were shown pix of businesses with help wanted signs. Yup. Everything shown was for food service of one kind or another.
Just for shits and giggles, I looked up clerical jobs available with our county government. I found one. Part time. Pays $9.06/hour and calls for GED or HS diploma. Hours are carved in stone. Also found one "administrative" job that pays $9.50. It's full time and also calls for GED or HS diploma and two years' related experience.
The job descriptions for both jobs sound like jobs that would be done by someone with a 4-year degree. The administrative job for $9.50 requiring two years' related experience? Tell ya what: at that pay, they'll be damn lucky to find an un-qualified applicant with any experience at all.
