www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/how-to-talk-to-insurrectionists-and-conspiracy-theorists/ar-BB1gvp6H?ocid=msedgntpInteresting read. We found through one of our neuroscience studies of jihadist supporters that when extremists feel that their peers—not necessarily other jihadists, just other members of their ethnic group — did not support violence, the jihadists themselves toned down their own violent intentions. Not only that, it reactivated areas of the brain associated with deliberation and self-reflection which had previously been offline. Again, these peers were not fellow extremists but rather just other local members of their ethnic group.
To me, that clearly shows that if we want to lower the violent intentions of political extremists of any kind, we have to make them realize that the broader non-extremist community, including people similar to them, disapproves. This means everyday Americans have the power to reduce insurrectionist violence of the kind we saw on Jan. 6, simply by condemning it.
In other words, making people feel socially excluded only pushes them toward extremism. So while it may be distasteful, we need to make those tilting toward political extremism — those who support the Jan. 6 insurrection, espouse violence in support of their political beliefs, or adhere to conspiracy theories — feel included and not excluded, if we want to pull them back from the edge of violence.

I appreciate that solution, but I am not feeling any urge to hug these fuckers.

A problem with that is while people may not condone the violence a hell of a lot of people agree with their views. And even if they don't agree with the big lie they feel and agree with the white rage the fueled it.
It's going to be hard to reprogram these people when our society is built on the fuel for their fire.

But that doesn't mean we should try - or atleast also voice a more moderate (or liberal) view point. (I got my siblings to shut the F#$K up about "lining up and shooting ALL the BLM protestors - under the assumption they were doing the looting" by wondering why it was OK to NOT shoot all the celebrants when "riots" of happiness break out when one's local team wins the BIG SportsBall Championship and some people go out and break into stores/cars/damage private and public property? Let's line up and shoot ALL the people celebrating in the streets and marching and cheering! ) I didn't change their minds - but they did tone down what they were saying.

It's going to be hard to reprogram these people when our society is built on the fuel for their fire. My husband has a conservative friend who claims to hate Trump. His official position is that he doesn't believe there was anything wrong with the election and Biden won, fair and square - but the possibility to unseat Biden or the damage being done by the big lie is okay because it is less harmful than any policy the Dems want to put in place.

Unfortunately, the majority of Americans would like to see more unity. But extreme messaging makes it impossible on both sides.
