I am too young to retire. I have mentor that I have the upmost respect for advise me not tot to leave to run to something but run to another opportunity. When I started at my present position. I had hoped it was where I would retire. Not so sure now since I am not sure it will stay in business.

Thank you. Those were exactly my thoughts. I feel like I’m floundering with no purpose in life. I will definitely have a plan when I retire again. And that floundering can occur even in retirement. I retired in 2001 and have explored a lot of paths since then, including part-time employment. I'm currently exploring again because this year I chose to move away from a volunteer path I'd pursued for 8 years. As humans, our personalities, our needs, aren't static and our goals and lives have to evolve too. Very good point. Good luck with your new path!

Just got the email that they want everyone back full time. Ive worked from home for years, but will go in for meetings now, masked. I don't trust my coworkers to be vaccinated.

I am hoping to have enough money to stop working in 7 years, IF I want to, but I refuse to use the word "retire." For one, I do not want a retirement party (which always seems to happen in my industry). Everyone makes a big deal over the fact you are "retiring." Yeah, no thank you...I prefer to just ride off in the sunset without all the hoopla. I'm seriously thinking I might make shit up like I have a job overseas or something...
Secondly, I'm not so sure that once I leave there I will not continue working in some form at some point. In a perfect world, I'll spend a year or two doing some traveling, hiking, etc while I'm still young. Then I might decide to work part-time or start a business...who knows since life seems to throw us curve balls...but I just know I don't really like the word "retired" while I'm still so young. Thinking of it as more of a sabbatical.

I went remote about a year before the pandemic started. It was a very orderly transition, and we were encouraged to bring our office furniture home. So I have a really nice chair, a standing desk, and two monitors that are actually at I level. I really feel bad for the people who were forced to abruptly switch to working from home.
As for me, I hope to never set foot in an office, except for the occasional meetings. Listening to my coworkers six hour conversations about their fantasy football league does not make me more productive, neither just getting sick three times as often.
As an IT worker, I have to do things that are outside my comfort zone all the time, and therefore I have nothing but contempt for any manager who cant learn how to manage remote workers. Apparently, I’m not alone. A lot of companies have had mass resignation from their IT departments when they force them to go back into the office.
